@Thawne1338 it's spot checks for making sure that goods vehicles are in a safe, and maintained condition with well secured loads. It's also to make sure that drivers aren't driving too much and creating extra risk to other road users. Basically a part of reducing accidents on UK roads.

I was under the impression, from when I drove coaches, that there's apparently a database of checks and the more green ticks you get the less likely you are to be pulled. The company I worked for had been going for about 50 years and always had green ticks (they took maintenance very seriously) so we almost never got pulled. That's how I understood it anyway. So hopefully they start ignoring you when they see you because they'll know you're all good.

It's the OCRS (Operator Compliance Risk Score) which works on a red/amber/green rating for operators. It doesn't really matter who the driver is, it's the company they are looking at when deciding whether to pull someone over. Companies in red will get stopped much more than those in green but, as has already been said, those in green will still be checked from time to time to make sure they are keeping their standards up.

Either I've been lucky or you've been very unlucky. After 29 years behind the wheel of an HGV, I've been pulled over by DVSA 3 times ( +a couple of times by the French equivalent in my 5 year stint driving in Europe). I know the company I drive for now is hot on compliance, so not likely to be pulled .
@cclayton5978
@cclayton5978 Год назад
A newer standard known at ER - Earned Recognition is the way to go if you do not want to be pulled, this does require a business to have all relevant records available through an approved electric data base where DVSA monitor remotely... the expense for small operators to implement this can out way the benefits, this is an assessment to be done by the business on the possible lost time from road side stops... the more vehicles in active operation the greater the benefit. All depends on the operation, just because one doesn't hold ER membership doesn't mean they are not compliant. Well done to the driver for his professionalism and calm head, asset to the business!!

I'm a night driver myself, it's great not being pestered by DVSA isn't it? I've only been pulled once, many years ago working for a packaging company, I was hauling polystyrene foam packing filler, we crammed the bags of product into the trailer until the curtains bulged. I obviously got pulled by the motorcycle policeman because of the bulging curtains, but the funny part came when I was on the weighbridge and the VOSA (That's what they were called back then) guy couldn't figure out why my truck weighed about the same as an unladen truck. Anyway, I let him sctach his head for as long as I could get away with it, he even asked if I was unladen, I said no, I haven't done my first drop yet! Eventually I had to put him out of his misery, I explained what I was carrying, but the satisfaction of delaying them meant they couldn't pull any other drivers until they'd finished with me was what made it worth it. Apart from driving at night I'm dragging double deck trailers around these days so they wouldn't be able to fit me in their check bay anyway!

my first and only stop with DVLA (?) as it was in those days, was at Carmarthen heading out to Tenby in a 608 Mercedes van. The van was 10 days old for that year in September and they went over it like it was 40 years old, the tyres still had the pips on them as this was it's first trip. Speaking to the copper whilst they checked it, i said to him "have you seen the reg, it's brand new" he looked at the front and spoke to the DVLA guy whose face immediately went bright red, needless to say it passed and i was on my way.

Penny pinch checks makes one feel like an only human being, stuck in a land of robots, working for the system, controlled by A.i. Altho... not fair on the A.i., cause it would've seen the facts *before* and eliminated unnecessary waste of time and fuel. Also, you can program A.i. to let the driver lag within tolerable limits (overtiming, failing to check lights etc), but you cannot make or force a hypocrit wearing uniform to not to be an asshole. They say "it's a part of life", but let them have it all. I prefer to live in society, where you have 30% chance of being hit by a brakeless lorry, but don't have to dance with a tube in your mouth, every time you have to take some used plastics to a place, mile away. Safety rules supposed to help life, by not making it a crash course. What's the point of having a healthy body, when your mental health being damaged on a daily basis? #working_zombie #safetynazis

As an ex dvsa vehicle inspector and an ex artic driver, nice to witness the polite way in which you handled the vehicle stop, at the DVSA we always said the first rule in the book was drivers attitude, I was always polite and explained things to the driver and was always clear and concise, the only thing that really annoyed me was finding loose wheel nuts, as there is no excuse, the driver can clearly see wheel nuts on their walk round daily check, and when I was working as a driver, whilst the vehicle was unloading I would do another walk around check and never received a prohibition notice or a defect notice on any of the vehicles I drove

I have gone from respecting the Ministry to holding them in contempt. There used to be a general mutual respect between fleets and enforcers, but that's gone now. It seems to be a competition between modern DVSA to see how many tickets they can hand out and how trivial they can get it. Maybe I'm just getting old and intolerant. I wouldn't mind if they were concentrating on serious or repeat defects, but some of the stuff I am seeing these days smacks of targets.

When I was a young police officer (not traffic, just an ordinary copper) I had an international haulage company on my patch. I got on really well with the owner, who used to encourage me to visit, drink tea and learn about how all the regulations worked etc, as many officers are nervous around HGV's. His point of view was that he ran a very tidy and legal operation and was pee'd off at the many cowboys around in those days, trying to undercut him by skimping on maintenance and cheating on hours etc. He was always happy for his rigs to get stopped by us or the ministry, so long as we'd do the same to his competitors. They are there to do a job, just like the rest of us. As long as you have followed the rules and regulations regarding drivers hours and carried out a pre use check (plus any extra checks when you are out of the vehicle (walking back from dispatch offices, cafe or the bogs)) you as the driver should be fine. Most of these checks are to make sure that the company is following the correct procedures and maintenance schedules. Good luck with your new career

Happened to me whilst driving a coach once, although it was a joint DVSA/Police operation, so I got "Follow Me" from a police car into Membury services. The Traffic Sergeant - who I greeted with a polite "How can I help you" - stated they were targeting coach drivers today because the HGV drivers felt that there was an unfair bias away from coaches. My co-driver and I (long days work) helped the officers from both organisations however we could, were consistently polite and helpful, and as a result, I got words of advice for a couple of tacho cock-ups, along with a "and don't let me catch you making those mistakes again", before being sent on our way, the coach having been given a clean bill of safety. With DVSA and the police, you tend to get what you give....

We were just on the south side of Edinburgh, earlier he’d stopped a vehicle that was 2 days old, when he explained that he was going to do a mechanical check the driver rather cockily had replied “Fill your boots Jock, you’ll struggle to find any f*&+ing faults with this it’s brand new” Defects included 5th wheel cradle to chassis bolts visibly loose, various wheel nuts loose, air deflector kit insecure, plus a lot of more minor stuff. A second tractor unit was called for the trailer and the brand new unit was recovered to the nearest dealership for repairs and a visit to the testing station to clear all the prohibitions. DVSA are doing a job, they’re keeping the public safe, which includes our families, wives & kids. A bit of courtesy & respect goes a long way and it’s usually a two way street.

@@hitop2365 Fella I knew ran a 7.5 ton Merc van on van insurance somehow, collecting waste veg oil. Got VOSA'd with oil running out of the side door. Managed to bluff his way through the awkward op's license questions but they got him to wait while they called the police 'cause his license was revoked and there was a warrant out on him due to unpaid fines!! I found all this out 'cause I had to collect the Merc from the pound - and it was FAR from roadworthy. Scary stuff.

5:00 he's draining the air tanks to see how quickly the compressor builds the pressure back up to, should be 3 minutes until the warning goes off at around 5/6 bar which is plenty of time. 6:25 now he's checking for air leaks. Suppose to really check the lights with the vehicle running since the truck will run electricity straight from the alternator to run the electrics so if the alternator is defective you might get dim, inop or flickering lights

Interesting to see a different way to do it back in the UK. Norway's road authority have multiple bases along the main routes, and when they go active they turn on big signs indicating that all vehicles over 3.5t MGW have to go through. Most get a weight check, and tacho check (being local they know a lot of the local firms and drivers, so they also have a good idea which forms keep their wagons in top notch condition) Of those picked for a more in depth check (more like you had, although often on a brake test roller too) the reports they post show about a 60-70% rate of infractions meaning a fine/prohibition. It's sometimes scary to read how many trucks come across the border in mid-winter without the legally required winter tyres and chains. You can also guess who it is has to get pulled out the ditches on the mountain roads.

Whats funny is when he does the inspection, my routine kicks back in lmao! Brain screaming « parkbrake offff Footbrake onnnn And offf Parkbrake on » Fyi, the reason they pulled you is probably the fact it’s scaffolding related. A lot of those companies run ragged things trust me. If these stops continue to go well they should see the o license and reduce stopping activities. « Clean in here for a scaffold truck » I would also suggest removing the camera mounts prior to inspection depending where they are mounted, i’m guessing window sucker near piller? As much as I let people off, it only takes one jobsworth for it to be deemed an obstruction and a failure criteria (although i haven’t read the book in ages, could have changed) this would be why he mentioned the « non standard equipment » I once hopped in a vehicle Hopped right back out and went « anything you wish to remove from the windscreen before i get in? » lmao This was a fun watch for me cheers james
