@flipper2392 Both, sometimes!! I sure as hell wouldn't have missed it though; I sure as hell even miss it now even after many years retired. Blood might be thicker than water but diesel's sweeter than blood!!!

Each driver was an artist painting a picture with his Ropes and Sheets, some were masters, some not so good, a bag of shit. Some loads looked a works of art, you just wanted that load to stay on forever and a day, Some loads you just should have started again, You ended with a neck and back ache, looking in the mirrors, if that load bulging out more than what it was 10 miles back. Sat in a pub or a greasy spoon, if you smoked, rubbing down the calluses with a box of swanvester matches from all that roping and sheeting. Thanks for the memories, some good, some not so.

Great shot of the Bowaters 8 wheelers, they had a depot at Mitcham, S.E. London, I remember some monster loads coming out of there!

Great days, Atkinson Borderer was king of the road, and still is👍.

Oh yeah, nothing like getting in to a Borderer cold wet and hungry after roping and sheeting a load. Ha! Wouldn't have missed it for all the tea in China.

@jodavies8952 The company I started with in the mid '70s had one remaining Borderer in their fleet (subsequently converted to a wrecker) among SedAks, a couple sleepers, the rest 180 bhp day cabs. For years I travelled the UK in a day cab, even ferrying Stranraer to Larne for six months, and sleeping across the seats. Many drivers had nothing better then, the only refinement was power steering! Those were the days long before Greta was born and truck parks were visible from miles around by the diesel haze caused by drivers running their engines in winter to keep warm before kipping down! 2023 drivers don't know what they've missed! Roping n sheeting? Again long before VOSA and the transport bureaucrats in Brussels got themselves in things they knew/still know nothing about. Bring back the log book😂😂

I'm with you Colin, I used to drive a Borderer in the mid 70s and later on I bought one myself and started work with it. Couldn't keep going sadly due to difficulty getting paid, engine packed up and a really bad wife.

@@seamusburke9101 Don't take it too hard, mate. When I started tramping in the mid-'70s an old trucker gave me a few words of wisdom; he told me there were two things truck drivers suffer from, one's piles, the other's divorce. Right on both counts, mate!!! But the job still came first!

When you see just how many firms ran ERF, foden, AEC, Seddon it makes you realize just how bad their management was to give away that advantage and end up the way they did !!!

Just noticed @10:31 the Lambert`s ERF, the driver with suitcase, just going to or coming back from his overnight digs. When i first started as a trailer mate the "night out" money was 7/6d a night!!!
