Trucking out the snow …Last winter storm prep???

Life in the Eastern Sierra

Town of Mammoth Lakes is working overtime as we get ready for what will hopefully be the last significant snow fall of the winter season. Heavy machinery, trucks, and roof shovelers are everywhere. At the house we need to finally clear the roof, tackle some ice issues, and widen the driveway to help direct what will soon be snow melt

A garden hose connected to the hot water at your washing machine, works great for de-icing the driveway. Just hose it down a couple times during the hottest part of the day.

That sounds great when it has somewhere to drain away from the home. Problem is he mentioned the storm drains are all covered and likely frozen over. I was thinking of de-icing mats which are electric powered. Problem is…still have to deal with water possibly running back into his garage.

Be careful if you do invest in a metal roof. We had one and the snow would just shoot off once it hit like 6 inches. Anything under it it would destroy. So it's just a thought to keep in mind.

I read all the replies up to this point AFTER watching this video. Your videos are documenting this Mammoth winter; it appears as though, everyone in town will have something to be proud of in the way y'all are dealing with this winter. Keep us updated on any plans to have a metal roof installed over your bunker. Sometime in the near future it might be a good idea to buy a good supply of Permethrin, to deal with mosquitos this spring/summer. Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada

Don't put rock salt directly on your roof. Fill some black nylon stockings with rock salt, tie off the ends, then lay them on the ice dam perpendicular to the edge of the roof. The heat of the sun will warm them up and they will sink into the ice dam. Move them every few days and the dam will be gone soon.

A little tip, when cutting thick branches like these, make a cut underneath about 1 third and the rest from above, that way you have less chance of tearing and nipping your blade stuck in the branches.. And great to see the street getting wider! I always fear such big machines, don't know why because I litteraly am a daredevil but those machines? Brrr 😶 😁 I pray that all goes well with the time coming up and melting it all...... ai ai ai.. I hope you do not have any leakes on your roof anywhere now? Or have had? EDIT, another idea I saw somewhere else.. would a Saw not help with removing iced up snow? Cut some cubicles and throw them aside with a shovel? Just some ideas, hope you don't mind.. wished I could help you myself but from the other side of the Pond that litteraly doesn't help you or anyone out where you all are... sorry.. (Did not seen all your video's, I am trying to catch up with it though! Edit2, lol! But I would be drunk as .... with the words you have given now! 😁 EDIT 3, Wow! Can I say that you are becoming very creative with cinematography? The Go-pro clamped to the shovel, the timelaps and the coolest one, the skidsteer in slow motion! 😎👌

Long gone are the times when plowing and even snow blowing will move this huge snow dumps from the roads, streets, and parking lots. It all has to be trucked away because it can't be piled any higher? Hopefully, there will not be any more huge snow dumps this spring? This is great for Mammoth Mountain and Mammoth Lake tourism. The area has to catch up clearing snow for tourists to come up to park in the area. Who pays to snow blow into these huge dump trucks in the Mammoth Lakes area on the city streets, country roads and the highway 203? Now, I can see where the tax money goes to keep this area somewhat clear of snow and traffic moving. It is very good for vacationers and tourist dollars to come up into the Mammoth Lakes economy this year. This extremely heavy snow winter should bring many visitors to the Mammoth Lakes area in the spring and into the summer this year. I regret this extremely heavy snow because it delays hiking and backpacking well into the summer maybe into the fall in 2023.
@jeffjansen582
@jeffjansen582 Год назад
Great vid, I have never seen dump trucks with so little capacity used for snow removal, 25 cubic yards minimum, 5 feet and sends the little truck away half full. Do they charge by volume or trips? At $7 a gallon and time spent someone is getting rich, and production is half what it could be. That roof ice dam could be costly, cheaper for a melting cable than a new steel roof.

Could you run some type of space heater (like a Little Buddy Heater) to melt or loosen up the ice by your garage? You could do it in sections and watch it work while having a cup of hot chocolate. This could save your back and the need to use rock salt.

@alquinn8576
@alquinn8576 Год назад
it takes ~10kwh of energy to melt a cubic meter of snow (if it's at the melting point, assuming it is 10% the density of ice), which is the heat produced by burning 1/3 gallon of gas. Melting 3m high snow on a road 3m wide and 500m long would take 1,500 gallons of gas. Alternatively, a dump truck can carry ~10 cubic meters of snow using maybe ~1 gallon of gas, depending on how far it has to go to dump it and return.

moving frozen water with semi trailers is in no way sustainable...They close the Tioga Road in Yosemite for the Winter. Between the avalanche risk and a gargantuan amount of snow there's no way to keep that road open. Obviously the ski industry dominates the local economy in Tahoe and Mammoth. Keeping Sierra mountains clear of snow is both a herculean task and an energy intensive operation. It may become a point where it just doesn't make economic sense to keep the road to Sidewinder open in the WInter. See The Shining
