The MEPs are NOT appointed by their respective countries' governments, but elected by the people, much like Canadian MPs are not sent to Ottawa by the governors of the provinces they come from, but elected by their constituents. As a person touching 70 years of age, and a follower of Canadian politics since the age of 14; there have been many politicians, at all levels of government, that I have disagreed with but still respected. I have never, until the past few years, hated so many Canadian politicians. The absence of honour, integrity, honesty and the assertions without evidence are inexcusable. Our Prime Minister is repulsive. This of course could only have happened, in my opinion, in a country with a inactive citizenry. We allowed our employees to become our masters. We are all capable of taking it back and putting them in their place.

The European Parliament has a lot of MPs and debates succeeding the speech of a head of government can take hours, proceeding after the guest speaker has long left. Thus, at the end, the parliament is often empty and MEPs deliver speeches mainly for their home crowds. It's a normal thing to happen.
