People really need to stop saying this, “needs to be as good as season 1.” Sorry but that’s ridiculous, True Detective could release 10 more seasons and none would be as good as season 1. Season 1 came out of nowhere and showed ppl a dark neo-noir short series format the likes of which no one had ever seen before. Which is why it was arguably the best season of television ever with arguably the greatest tv character ever, it’s damn near impossible to replicate that sort of perfection in any show EVER. Season 3 doesn’t need to be as good as season 1, it just needs to be a lot better than season 2 lmao.

Some think it's unfair to use Season One as a benchmark of quality. But it's virtually impossible not to. It stands as one of the greatest crime dramas ever committed to film.

This looks intriguing, though it's unlikely that it will be on the same level as season 1. But that's okay, the first season was perfect and in my opinion the single greatest season of any TV show ever.

Let's be crystal clear, nothing will be as perfect and mind-blowing as the first season with Rust Cohle but I really hope this season 3 is intellectual and deep, I really miss that feeling from season 1.

I need my Lovecraftian themes and nebulous, occultist tone. Forgotten corners of the world and the terror of deep time. Forces of madness beyond understanding, and the weak industries and efforts of man so tragically temporary. This is why I loved True Detective season 1. If all they focus on in season 3 is the character drama of a mystery case, then they'll never catch that magic of the original, amazing main character/actor or not.

It can't be: #1- Any worse than Season 2. Or #2- Any better than Season 1.

This was the definition of a nice surprise. Came to watch Sharp Objects and got a tease for True Detective, too. Nicely done, HBO.

For all people deciding whether to watch this series or not, I must recommend it. It was more amazing than I thought. Fantastic case, where I felt like I am a part of it. REALLY, WATCH IT.

Just finished watching this season and it exceeded expectations. Way better than the previous season. Mahershala Ali was phenomenal but I think Stephen Dorff staked his claim as one of the best actors in the game for his performance.

I LOVED season 3. I mean of course it didn't live up to season 1, but that's simply because nothing ever can. No other season, whether of True Detective or any other TV show will every be as good as season one, simply because season one set the bar too high. But when seen individually, Season 3 was amazing and hauntingly beautiful, and far, far better than Season 2.

Season one was immense but I swear season two isn't as bad as what people are saying

Season 3 was a huge disappointment for me. Tried to be a carbon copy of the 1st season but came up way short, though I liked Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff's performances, I really didn't care for the story. People hate on season 2 but at least it had a different feel to it than season 1, was well acted (especially Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn), and wasn't boring or predictable. Season 1 was the best though: Season 1: 9/10 Season 2: 8/10 Season 3: 7/10

I can't wait for this one! I still don't understand why people hate on season 2 so much. The plot and character development was top notch. Yes it was different than the original but isn't variety the spice of life?

Just finished…wow Never seen anything like how the story was told simultaneously . Yeah you can say season 1 but the tone and method is different. Having it told through wayne’s battle with alzeihemers as he struggles to finish the case for 35 years …. made me tearful

I'm glad they kept the series going. Season 1 was so good. Season 2 wasn't as terrible as many say, but the series as a whole needs to continue.

Don't listen to the fanatic hivemind about True Detective Season 2.

I'll be annoyed if they copy the future/past narration from season 1, out of sheer desperation to recreate it's success. Also, not that S2 was perfect, but I'd bet many of its detractors failed to understand the 'cosmic' aspect it was going for. Instead of a supernatural horror, the horror was the structure of capitalism.

Season 1 was legendary...hope this one is better than S2...Ali is amazing.

Just finished the season 3 and man! it was awesome. I was speechless at the end, the way they end up the story. It will be in my mind for some long time. The acting is flawless. If you are thinking about either to watch it or not, I am recommending it to you, do watch it. It won't disappoint you.

Thank god they did season 3 similar to season 1. The only thing good about that disatrous season 2 was Colin Farrell.

Marvels future Blade (Mahershala Ali), co-starred along with with former Blade villain, Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff). I will be forever sad knowing this fact until others catch on!

Season 2 was a beautiful noir tragedy. To the people who disliked it, you didn't focus on the details enough.

They really should have continued the 'Cult like' themes throughout the series. That's what gave season 1 so much richness and lore, and made it even more mysterious.

the major reason why Season 1 was so successful was primarily because of the cult and religious element. they need to bring back that eerie, supernatural, mysterious feel. i say if they don't want to go for the exact same element, their next best bed would be a conspiracy.

The show's central plot takes place in the Ozarks in 70s-80s. I guess we see much older Mahershala's character in a modern time, still trying to figure out the case. So I guess the episodes in Season 3 shows present and past constantly just like in Season 1.

Ali's voice is pretty much perfect for this role.

Creator Nic Pizzolatto is taking his anthology series to the Ozarks for Season 3. Stephen Dorff (Somewhere, Immortals) is set to play Arkansas State Investigator Roland West, joining Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and actor Carmen Ejogo (Selma, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them). Ali and Dorff will play partner detectives on the case of a macabre crime that spans three decades. Ejogo will play a schoolteacher named Amelia Reardon, who is connected to two missing children.

Anything with Mahershala Ali in it will always be good

This season is extremely good. I was just as hooked as I was for season one. What a great actor, Ali is.

Season 2 could never live up to the near perfection of Season 1, but it was decent in its own regard. This looks a lot more like a Season 1 type of tone.

honestly I love HBO so much. They just get IT. Sharp Objects ends brilliantly, and they drop A TRUE DETECTIVE TRAILER SEASON 3! I almost had a heart attack. This will be sensational, I am beyond hype.

They should make a season 3 with Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara with a little cameo of Rust in his "Crash" times.

I’m in. I thought even season two was good if you don’t compare it to season one. It’s an anthology show they’re going to be different

"Before you ever knew me... I wasn't scared much. I wasn't a fearful man." Very excited. Mahershala looks like he's going to blow us away with his performance. I'm happy Pizzolatto didn't get discouraged enough to abandon the series after season 2 didn't do as well as season 1. Season 1 will always be a pinnacle of television, but people should give season 2 another chance. There was a lot going on, but I still enjoyed the story. The stuff Casper was into was suitably dark and disturbing - just not as much as Errol Childress and the rest of his cult. I liked Frank and Ray a lot - they were engaging characters. The Vinci shootout definitely rivaled the raid on the projects. Season 3 looks closer to the rural darkness Marty and Rust faced so I'm psyched about that. I'm getting a real Johnny Gosch/Franklin Cover Up vibe from this trailer. Hopefully more shows exposing the perversity that seems to go hand in hand with power will lead to a light being shone on it in real life.

Season 1 is unbeatable but season 3 is too good.

There are several moments in this trailer that almost completely mirror that of season 1. Two of the most obvious being the kid along the road smiling and waving as they drive by, and a dude bound by duct tape thrown into the back of a vehicle. Watch the season 1 trailer followed by this one, you'll see the clear throwbacks.

Ok HBO, you got my attention. Let's wait and see the final result.

Season 1 was and still is untouchable..... Nothing will ever compare imo. And in thinking that season 3 will do so will only set you up for disappointment. I think that's what went wrong with season 2. Everyone was expecting it to be just as good or dare I say better than the first. Granted it was trash as a whole but when you give it the "True Detective" name it gets even worse. They should have named season 2 and this season something completely different and kept the first season as the only "True Detective" Because you just keep setting yourself up for further failure and disappointment when your thinking "True Detective" season 2 or season 3. They won't be nearly as good as the first that's why they should be named differently. The bar was just set way too high with the first season and everything else with that name we try to compare and will just be let down.... Anyway I hope this season 3 of whatever will be good lol

People complaining about Season 2 dont realize that Nic Pizzolato was rushed through the script by HBO. HBO didnt give him enough which they admitted themselves. "In an interview with The Frame, HBO’s President of Programming, Michael Lombardo, was asked about what went wrong with Nic Pizzolatto’s acclaimed show from the first year to the second. Lombardo took responsibility for possibly rushing production before it was ready. “When we tell somebody to hit an air date as opposed to allowing the writing to find its own natural resting place, when it’s ready, when it’s baked - we’ve failed,” he said. Lombardo mentioned that season one had been something Pizzolatto has been working on for a long time; whereas he was asked “to deliver [season two] in a very short time frame.” "

This looks awesome. Season 2 was absolute garbage. Not by comparison either, just wasn't great.

Safe to say this exceeded expectations without a doubt! I enjoyed both s1 and 3 cant decide which I like more all I know is that this szn is just as good if not better.

Season 2 was misunderstood genius, and the people that liked season 1 only seem like they were just into it for the aesthetics and they don't really understand what it was trying to say anyway.
