TRUE DETECTIVE Season 4 Episode 2 BREAKDOWN, ENDING EXPLAINED, and Season 1 Connections 

There are a lot of images showing people pointing in this episode. The angular spiral symbol looks a lot like the coiling of your fingers when pointing. I think this version of the yellow sign "points" to something else, just not sure what.

The symbol is a reference to the Night King symbol in GoT he was leaving. True Detective is basically a GoT spinoff

Here is my theory what if Annie k got sick from something to do with the mine ,and being potentially pregnant with Clark's child they were trying to cure her or get evidence from her but it went bad like when exorcism kill people. Maybe the scientist pinned wrong they were actually working against the mine ,and not hiding info.

I think you're on the right track, and the references to season 1 are undeniable. I think it's a bit overloaded and pretentious the way they try to build up all this wacky cult madness, depraved mystery, horror genre touches, corruption, despoiling of the planet, conspiracy, etc. But the visuals are well-done, and the acting is pretty strong if the plot lines and writing are a bit forced much of the time. Finally, I urge you to SLOW DOWN your verbal delivery in laying out your interpretations. That rapid pace is maddening. Lay off the caffeine or whatever stimulant leads to such breathless and emphatic delivery.

I would love to see Rust’s character come back! I think it’s not very likely though, unless that was him at the tsalal station. The person the delivery driver saw. Also, I had subtitles on and Rose says Travis’s last name is Cohle. The line is “one last gift from Travis Cohle, he introduced me to you”

Definitely a connection, if not on the inside then some kind of blackmail situation. Maybe Tuttle United has a cloven hoof in the door invested in the Russian mail order bride industry & that's Hank's payoff for sitting on the Annie files.

It's a long stretch but I kept thinking of the Tuttles maid saying "back then, families were bigger" and the boy with scars was a Ledoux or a Childress, not a Tuttle.

I was gonna mention this as well! Glad I’m not the only one who was reminded of the Dyatlov Pass. The state the bodies are in is uncannily similar to the point that I wonder if the incident will get mentioned in the show at all.

In the official podcast, the director specifically said that the Dyatlov Pass Incident was an inspiration for the premise of the crime scene! Loved that detail as well

True, however the detectives talking to rust in season 1 said there was no medical records ever found backing up the diagnosis. They said Travis was lying.

Hate this say this but it’s really not that surprising especially since it is primarily bad in the indigenous community. Irl the American government doesn’t care about us much and on our reservations there’s barley any drinkable water that’s not bottled or had to be boiled, plus Flint Michigan has been without clean water for 5 years, so unfortunately I don’t think it’s major for the show in the sense of it being cult related, more so seemingly like it’s a tie in for real world issues yk?

​@Polaris_616 Unfortunately, water is an everybody issue. Especially given that corporations like Nestle steals millions of gallons of water from any and everywhere! They don't pay a dime for it, but continue to pump, sometimes until tributaries run dry. And they aren't the only water corporations to do this. This is why I don't buy anything Nestle anymore, and sadly they own a lot of brands. I know that it's much worse in Indigenous communities, as well as rural and urban areas without a lot of funding. I'm not trying to downplay the horrific realities within these communities. However, during many of my master's degree courses, it's always a topic of discussion that water is going to cause a massive war, because of it being a finite resource, and the way that we misuse it, pollute it, over-consume it, the reality of medications are now being found in ground water as well as water from the tap. Then we have to think about the microplastics being found in the water systems, and we consume them, as well as all life. Then I think about soil erosion, chemical runoff, as well as all of illegal dumping of chemicals. We are actively destroying a resource we need to survive as a species. By we, I'm talking about around the Globe. Countries that have less environmental protections, and all of the horrific runoff from companies and corporations, who are dying clothes, as well as those who don't care about what they're throwing into the water, over fishing...the destruction of ecosystems like the coral reefs, entire sections of tributaries that harvest NO LIFE, not even algae. It is seriously scary shit, when you start to really buckle down and start doing the research. I personally think the water issues they're having plays directly into this show. We always want to think it's some scary monster doing all of this, but in reality we don't need monsters when we have human beings. We do a fine enough job at destroying ourselves and the environment around us...that monsters would probably be more afraid of us, and try to hightail it out of here as quickly as possible! I also believe that's part of the research they're conducting at the Tsalal Research Center. I think that some of their research is going to show that they uncovered proof that human life, as we know it, is over. Between how quickly the ice caps are melting, the extreme changes in potable/drinkable water, the scarcity that we're already witnessing. And one of the biggest problems with drinkable water today is bottled water. The water bottle industry is a scam. How they directly effect our water resources is absolutely reprehensible. If you're into documentaries, I'd suggest watching Flow. You'll never want to touch bottled water ever again. But I also know that it's sometimes the only water source available to many, which is tragic in its own right. I'm so sorry that your communities are still treated so disgustingly, by the US government. I wish that I could be helping in some fashion, besides donating and signing petitions. Unfortunately, I got very sick in the middle of my master's program, and had to take medical leave. Had I not had to take medical leave, I would be either working with an Indigenous organization in Washington State or with an organization called Amazon Watch, where I would have been working aside and with Indigenous communities, such as the Kayapo Tribe, who lived on a tributary off of the Amazon River called the Xingu River. Since my Sophomore year in Undergrad, I've been wanting to work with Indigenous communities. I have always said that we (by we I mean colonizers...those who want to keep up with the Jones) need to pay more attention and learn from the ways Indigenous communities live, as well as sustain themselves, their communities, and even others, because they're obviously doing something right. The Kayapo Tribe lived in that area of the Xingu River for 1000s of years, and that land remained healthy and still continued to sustain their community, in abundance. That is until so-called developed cities, corporations, and shareholders with deep blood-lined pockets deemed it necessary to displace 100k Indigenous communities, because they wanted to destroy the natural flow of the river, by building the world's 3rd largest Hydroelectric Damn, on the Xingu River. Sadly, the damn only works 20% of the year, and 80% of the electricity created goes to surrounding cities. Again, I'm so very sorry for the mistreatment your community as well as all other Indigenous communities face, from the US Government.

Look at the lengths gone to in Season 1 to cover up all the wealthy / important people involved in the cult activities including help from the police.

Think Story's breakdown brought up how when Navarro talks to the dude about the trailer, he mentions his cousin died of Leukimia. He also goes to say that maybe Travis came back to finish his business bc he already knew he was dying and wanted to set things right before his eventual demise. I think that would be so cool of that turned out to be true.

I like the connections and the sense of a larger world of darkness. It's been so piecemeal in how I've watched the other seasons that I don't remember much of the allusions in seasons 2 and 3. I'm enjoying the slow reveals so far! I struggled with the finale of season 1, so the chance for it all to keep unfolding makes me want to keep watching.

Great episode very creepy love how we explore the supernatural elements back again next episode going to be interesting.

Its been talked about the dyatlov's pass incident influenced this season

Or you can Occam razor it and a slab of snow shifted and hit them with a small slower avalanche while they were sleeping. Doesn't seem mysterious at all to me

I'm thinking the spiral and in the trailer for future episodes it shows a man climbing a ladder up a tunnel with black circles around the tunnel. If it's long enough as you look down it would indeed look like a spiral as it decends

I agree. As soon as I saw the spiral in the Podcast I recognized it as an aerial photograph. The lines depict the topography. A dormant volcano?

The spiral symbol is used by pedophiles to represent boy love according to the FBI (people may recall this from the whole Pizza gate thing) so it made sense to associate it with the Tuttles. Now since references to S1 are being shoe-horned into Night Country they just changed the meaning.

Which the leukemia thing threw me off because in season one the two detectives said there was never evidence that Rust's father ever had leukemia. 🤔

Yeah, him and Woody Harrelson are executive producing the fourth season (edit: they did that with season two and three as well apparently) so hopefully they either bring themselves back although why why would they risk that but hopefully they add in whatever they brought into season one somehow

Bryan Cranston reprised Walter in both spinoffs, but they did it well and they were flashbacks.

I do think it’s a small chance they act in it but I think it’d be such a smart move if even if was a small part like a phone call or flash back

That's a reasonable theory, very plausible. The dialogue has already included several references to the water having gone bad and the power system going erratic.

The only line that sounds similar is being ripped from nothing and being placed in a meat suit or something to that effect. The themes from the book inspired the character of Rust but the idea he stole from him is a stretch.
