True Fans? Who Are They? - Types Of Fans 

true fans are the banes of fandom existence. no fan is better or worse than another. appreciate the fandom, the art, the fics and the theories. just don't shame those who haven't seen what you have. *mic drop*

I don't know why people hate on new fans! It turns them away from the fandom and in some cases it turns them against the thing they originally liked. I think if a newbie asks questions you should answer them nicely, offer others under your wing if you're more knowledgeable, you have a chance to introduce someone else to something you enjoy, shouldn't you be excited for them, if they haven't seen certain episodes, that means you can fangirl with them when they do.

I only have a few rules for being a true fan. You must have watched/read one of the versions of the thing(so for harry potter the books or the movies) they must be able to name the main male and female characters and you have to respect other ships even if you don't ship them.

A TRUE FAN is an apparatus with rotating blades that creates a current of air for cooling or ventilation. Do your research.

I am often scared to call myself a fan of something simply because of the nature of fan I am. I become deeply obsessed with something for a few weeks or months and then just feel myself slipping out of interest. I don't know if that is a bad thing or what but I feel like it makes me not be a fan at all despite having enjoyed the subject previously.

I stay away from a lot of places where people discuss fandoms. I have simultaneously been told I am pathetic and too obsessed with something as well as not really a fan of that same thing all in the same thread. This has happened to me with a few things like Harry Potter, Pokemon, Nancy Drew and certain animes. I just really like some things, and don't feel like I need validation from someone else about my interests.

I'm a lurker-fan. I'm always here, though you will almost never see me, and I have an extensive list or database of fanworks or metas that I can refer to.

A true fan wasn't necessarily there from the start but they're willing to be there to the end. Also you MUST respect your fellow fans (ships, books vs movies, etc).

for the "what kind of fan do you reckon you are?" thing, I would have to say that i am the obsessive kind. seriously everybody hates me for all the random references i make whenever anything happens. I don't hate on anybody for having less knowledge or anything, I'm just here sat in my room, tumblring like there's no tomorrow.

I hate this argument of "true fans", there's no such thing. only that some fans are more engaged than others, but that doesn't make anyone a "better" fan

I'm either a very casual fan or former fan, mostly. And definitely a multishipper.

I find the type of fan I am and the way I engage i fandom varies differently. For example I love writing/reading fanfic for Stargate since that seems to be the last active place I can find the fandom. For MLP/Seven Universe I engage in the RU-vid community a bit more with watching (and I'm starting to create my own!) episode reviews, head cannons and theories. With Supernatural I like to engage a bit more in the behind the scenes, keeping up with projects the actors are doing and watching panels since money and time is a barrier keeping me from going to conventions. I could go on with my lists of fandoms and how i engage in each one, but I think my point is that everyone can be multiple types of fans at once towards their fandoms of choice.

When it comes to being a fan of something, you an bet I'll be obsessed (making fanart, idolizing the show, ect.) But I'm not to the point of knowing the birthplace of the creator, their favorite food, or going out cosplaying. So, while I usually am the type to be a real obsessive fan, I'm usually what people call a casual fan :) Someone just always knows more. Also, this video was extremely *entertaining*.

Tbh, you surprised me with this video. I'm quite new to comic books (been reading for few months) , yet people were very kind and helpful, recommending their favourite titles and explaining the continuity if I asked. Nobody called me "not a true fan", only fan (sometimes "new" fan).

Another thing about access to the type of content to view a series also falls in to countries that can allow it and age rating. Certain series may be subjected to censorship or straight up banned from where they live. So it can be hard for fans to support it in their own country if they aren't allowed to see the material. Even the stuff like fansubs for anime or websites that upload TV airings that aren't official are mixed in whether they can help support something or not. Series of anime, books, games, and shows have a rating to tell what kind of content it contains. What if there's mature content? Can younger viewers be able to watch it and enjoy it? Or is it best to wait for years out? Even the type of mature content can cause a riot in the fandom that are age appropriate. Some may not find a certain subject to be accurate for real life that was shown in a series, others that can tolerate this that they separate fiction from reality, and few that may find uncomfortable based on experience. Many question which can draw the line and if being part of a certain side makes them right or wrong. I can't wait to see the vids for next week!

When reading works by fanfic authors, I try not to judge with their lack of knowledge, or myself for not having enough knowledge. As long as they put their heart and souls into what they love, I see not reason for judgement.

As the founder of a fandom called Lego Ninjago Masters of Spinjitzu shortened to Ninjago ( Fans called Ninjagoians ) I love when more people join in on loving the series and hate when I see other people in different fandoms go after someone for not knowing something and saying they aren't a 'True Fan' as long as you know the basics I.E character names what its basically about as long as you don't hate on others I consider you apart of the Fandom

I really think you hit the nail on the head with this one. I was REALLY into the Teen Titans a few years ago, and even went as Raven for Halloween one year. But since the fandom has kind of faded, especially after the GO! version came out, I became less "obsessive" or it. What especially saddened me was the fact that I couldnt read the comics...there are dozens of different versions, seemingly thousands of issues, all of which are hard for me to get. There aren't any comic stores in my town, and I'm kinda way to poor to get any. The same goes for a lot of other stuff I'd love to get into; I've been wanting to watch anime more as of late, but with school and the fact that I'm unwilling to pay for a subscription to an anime website, I can't watch much more than Netflix.

I think anyone who cares enough to be a fan is a true one

I think I'm the 'Late for the party' fan. Not necessarily because I don't wanna watch/play it while it's popular (although that does happen sometimes with me, e. g. Game of Thrones) but because; 1. I just haven't heard about it before, 2. it came out before my time and isn't so popular nowadays, 3. I just didn't have the fucking time. Then I attempt to join in on the fandom fun, I look at all the things I missed and I'm like 'woah, catching up with all this would take longer than watching/reading the series/playing the game through, etc.', so in the end I don't really participate. Sure, I still draw and write sometimes but like you said, that's more of the introvert side of things. Cosplaying a character that hasn't been popular for about 10 years isn't all that much fun, I imagine (although I still really wanna cosplay her).

As someone who both from Northern Ontario and does not like hockey I appreciate that you included Leafs fans. Nothing against them but they can be just as extreme as the nerdiest comic fan.

I see a fair amount of more obsessive fans here, and that's great. I myself am a more 'casual' or quieter fan of things. Like you said, I don't have much time/money to dedicate to fandoms. Bills have to be paid, work has to be done. I appreciate those who have the time to do amazing things like cosplays, films, fan art and more by showing my support, asking questions and [when I can] perhaps showing financial support. And that's totally okay with me.

I'm definitely the obsessive type of fan. I get far too excited when something new comes out for any given fandom, after I start to like something I _have_ to go and research it, I spend most of my time on it and make references that no one ever gets. And juxtapose to my introverted nature, I do love to cosplay my favourite characters. It just makes me feel so much cooler walking around in someone else's literal or metaphorical armour. ^_^

I think Im a casual fan, but Im a fan of sooo many things I cant even :') Im kinda hardcore whan it comes to music, but for series and films or books, Im a casual fan. Same for RU-vid, I can really like a creator, a series or anything and cosplay or write fanfictions or get envolved in theories without being a complete fangirl. I have different levels and ways of loving something but I try never being a toxic fan and being annoying when it comes to other fan. That said, I do hate it when people are like "Im a top fan" and they just know stressed out and ride x)

Hi, so I have a ship that I feel would be AMAZING to talk about! The show is called Pucca Funny Love. You can find the episodes on RU-vid too. Its basically a cartoon about this (yandere?) girl loving a ninja named Garu. Garu, taking a vow of silence to achieve honor, shows disdain, or rather being in an uncomfortable state whenever Pucca is around since she loves to tackle and kiss him. However there are some episodes that support the fact that Garu actually likes Pucca, its just that's he wants to receive honor then maybe later consider developing a relationship. The episodes that I feel should be looked over are- -He Loves Me Not -Slam Bam Birthday Bash -Full Moon Pucca -Hooray for Bollywood Its an older show, I believe its been canceled too. I just want more people to know about it since its a rather nice show that has many ships in it.

I think what makes a true fan is to be knowledgeable. I can't imagine liking something and not wanting to invest my time learning everything there is to know about it. One doesn't have to be talented and rich enough to make cosplay, fan art or buy the next book. But at least being invested enough to want to seek out knowledge seems reasonable to me. When I meet another gravity Falls fan, I don't want to have to reiterate what I feel should be common knowledge. I'd want the other person to be on a similar level as me. I want to have a discussion and exchange headcanons and theories, not be your teacher

I love this video! I never go to concerts because listening to music is something i feel is really personal and i don't follow the performers' lives as much as a lot of people i know from the fanbase because i am only interested in music. But i love this music and everything that people create based on it, i like lyrics interpretations and fanart and i don't think i'm any less fan of the music.

I'd like to say I'm a casual fluctuating fan. I'm chill with about anything, although people have called me "not an actual fan" for being like this. (I'm looking at you Clique) but Fangirl/Fanboy how you want, I have a friend who cosplays all the time. And she's quite dedicated. We can all just coexist

I see myself as a marvel fan but I have not read too many comics mainly becouse comics aren't available where I live. (In paper form) but I am working on it by reading them digitaly. I always try to make it to the premiere of the movie as well.

I think fandom will always be a matter of angles. Certain things meaning more to them. Like, theres the fandoms I wont budge on. Namely, Nirvana or The Crow. Now, I have tattoos relating to all of those things and have collected massive amounts of swag and Ive been known to wanna throttle people for having the nerve to insults the sacred name of St. Cobain. Yeah, thats how bad it is. And Im the one who started three petitions online to NOT remake The Crow. With those two things, there s no ground Im willing to give on. I watch The Crow every Devils Night at exactly 11:01 every year without fail and can tell you every single word of the movie andd everything about backstage and the accident that killed Brandon. I also dont tolerate bad photomanips/ art/fanfiction in any way. Theyre hallowed ground. Im also devoted to Stargate SG-1. But its a lower level of not budging. For instance, I was a part of the savedanieljackson.com parade and I still cant watch "Meridian" or parts of season six at all. But I wont balk atthe huge art or huge fanfiction community. And I still have a huge 'Gate tat that takes up the whole of my back. And I can pretty much pass any interrogations that come my way. Buuuuuuut. Im also a music historian, so I have seen all levels of fandom. Like, youd be shocked at how fickle the boy band fans are after awhile, but the Norwegian Black Metal scene will crawl on their bellies for certain bands till they die. That goes for prog rock too. Ever get into an argument with a TOOL fan? I hope not. But there are things Im a fan of and while I disagree with certain choices, Im not about to burn down anything for it. Ive been known to heckle teen shit, but thats me being an unapologetic music purist and elitist and anything that disposable dosent get any respect from me. Im also a huge Manson fan, but I take alot of shit for it, and if I didnt spend the last 20 years watching him do things that make him a target on purpose, you cant defend for too long. There is only ONE.....and I mean ONE...fandom I will not put up with in any way, and thats Twilight/50Shades fandoms. I hate those books and movies with a passion and despise its message. Im a dedicated hater to that, and I wont ever see it as any less than complete trash. To me, thats pretty much how it works in my camp. R

NOT TRUE. (i did watch Nine though he was my first :)) you can watch just Ten's seasons or just Eleven and Twelve and still be a fan. i feel like they say these things to kinda weed out the bandwagoners and maybe show off a bit. though you may not get a lot of the references, you will still enjoy the show, though maybe not as much coz you won't get it...i actually felt a little bad coz i'm new to Supernatural, and i've only seen up to S4 and i felt like i wasn't a PROPER SPN fan. but i've gotten over it. I know someone who frequently calls me a "fake weeaboo" because I don't watch as much anime as he does or because I don't care as much for continuing shows that he recommends but I find boring or uncomfortable. The only bad fans are tinhatters. And they tend to call themselves true fans...

Fans are like everything else. They have their good and their bad. Take a look at just about...anything. Whether it's fandom, politics, religions, academics, or even families can cause rivalries and conflict. Look at the American party system. You have those Democrats or Republicans who believe in their party and vote and have opinions generated towards the party. Then you have the "Our way or no way" group that believes, to quote Anakin Skywalker, "If you're not with me, then your my enemy" and will active try to shame any opposition. Same with fandom. You'll always have the occasional jackass who finds superiority in being all or nothing and Heaven help those who stand against. Plus you have bullies who put people down for having a different, well, anything than them. I don't let those people define the whole thing. I'm pretty sure it is an amazing work even if a few people are being jerks, as is the case in anything I like, do, or believe. At the end of the day, be yourself. If you had to please everyone...you'd be a vegetable because you wouldn't be able to do anything. And even that won't please some people.

I'm not proud it but i have to admit i thought something like that before, only with fan-turn-hater after they found out something they didn't like. i thought that recently with Fbawtft announcement that Dumbledore might be in a gay relationship. there're so many people saying that J.k Rowling turn him gay NOW, Dumbledore was always gay and his relationship and love for Grindelwald was a big part of his backstory. I'm more fine with people just said "I didnt know before, now i dont like it".
