I don't feel safe in any fandom I enter these days. Loud and spiteful people with strict views on what is and isn't acceptable in a fandom has made it that I have stopped trying to even participate in fandom conversations about anything that could be construed to be problematic or degenerate. It makes me sad.

There's also the problem within fandom of persons calling out others for shipping or making them out to be evil for liking certain ships. In some of the spaces I frequent ive also observed a level of entitlement with fans harassing others and fandom artists to stop drawing certain types of content of characters instead of curating their feed. Newer and younger fans dont seem to understand that artists/writers tag their works for this reason so that if you don't want to see something it can be blocked from your feed. To me this is one of the reasons that certain fandom are the way that they are.

Personally I've never gotten mixed up in fandom drama (im mostly a lurker) but I've seen shit go down. People can get stuborn on opinions and argue, but that's bound to happen when people are passionate about a work. I feel like we just need to take it less seriously and have fun.

Can I just say that I really appreciate Shipper's Guide for being the person who tries to be a voice of tolerance when it feels like everybody else just wants to fight all the time? Just thank you for making a space to feel good about fandom and shipping. These videos always give me such a sense of peace.

I definitely miss the olden days of my fandoms...My personal opinion....I kind of wish shipping and fandom was more quiet and unknown by the mainstream.

i'm glad i got into fandom and shipping as early as i did. discovered fanfiction when i was 16, met online friends around the same time who have the same interests, discovered new interests in the following years, experienced and witnessed my fair share of fandom craziness, and learned new things about myself as well. sure maybe not being in the spotlight is preferable, but i'd rather fandom and shipping be known than not. and hey, maybe in the next few years we'd have all calmed down some... maybe... lol

I'm one of the people who deeply resents the larger and larger spotlight being put on fandom and transformative works. I'm past my 'dirty little secret' phase for shipping but the inflammatory articles and RU-vid videos being made about shipping and "fangirl" culture are frustrating on so many levels. Like you mentioned in the video people completely outside the community with absolutely no context are just jumping at the chance to pick on the 'weird teenage girl thing'. They reduce conversations that are already happening or have happened within the fandom to clickbait. Fandoms have been discussing the ethics of RPS for YEARS with enough context and lived experience for nuance discussions to take place. I love my fandom space because I've worked hard to avoid toxicity and cultivate understanding with my fellow fandom travellers. Stuff like the Larry Stylinson drama just akin to garbage being dumped in my perfectly nice pond. But what else is there to do but take it in stride and try to remain calm because lashing out only makes us fangirls look worse.

I think the best way to enjoy fandom, other than your suggestions, is also remembering that its all fiction and not a big deal. That being said, I do tend to avoid fandoms because the faux drama is too ridiculous.

I happily have not had negative experiences in my fandoms despite my 16+ years of living the fangirl life. But like anything involving people, something fun can get toxic quickly. Which is extremely unfortunate. To each ship their own and be kind to each other as Aziraphale would say.

i love how your bring the whole fandom discourse to a higher level, portraying fans and shippers as human beings who can bring positive things to their communities and being part (even if the cast of crew of the media don't want it) of the media they enjoy, making it more diverse and complex, thank you

Okayy, I’ve got quite a few thoughts about this ;) (yay essay comment) 1) I think that a lot of people who aren’t apart of fandom view it as a “teenage girl’s” pass-time. Sadly, anything that “teenage girls” seem to like (one direction, fashion, makeup ect) tends to get looked down upon. The reality is though, that there are a lot of people in fandom, not just teenage girls. I’ve met people from all walks of life, some as old as my grandparents who love star trek, to those as young as my little cousin writing fanfiction about Ariel from the little mermaid. 2) It’s sad that SJWs are seen as such a negative thing, when the whole point of being a social justice warrior is... well... social justice. Since when is that a bad thing? Don’t we want equality? 3) I think that some fans are certainly overstepping their bounds, hounding creators to do what they want, but this is certainly not the majority. I also think that it maybe sometimes okay to ask for the work to be changed, if it is outright racist or harmul (i.e If a book was gonna promote self harm then I would totally sign a petition for the tv show to not have that element). It’s a very nuanced topic, where both the creators and the fans can be at fault. Another point to add to that is that I don’t think that people should be pushing for their ships to be canon, unless the queerbaiting is very clear. Because what’s queerbaiting and what isn’t is so messy, I would generally only stick to things where creators have outright announced a character to be gay, only to wash over it in the show/movie. For example, I don’t think Stucky was queerbaiting, because it was never intended. They wrote romance for Steve with Peggy, and that was the writer’s ship. On the other hand, the first time Adam appeared in Voltron... they outright said that he and Shiro had a thing, and then you couldn’t even tell. (I know they fixed that later but season 8 was a disaster in its own right). 4) I don’t think shipping is a bad thing, I just think that a small percentage of fans overstep boundaries and give us a bad name 5) I’ve found that Discord is actually great for fandom spaces, and I’m on a server with a bunch of people. We’re all quote different; my specialty is fanfiction, headcanons and theories, whilst others prefer strictly canon material. Some prefer art, some prefer music, some prefer discussion... But we all get along. It’s not that hard to be civil and respect other’s opinions. I even have the rarest pair of rare pairs as my otp (never ever met anyone else online who actively ships them ;-;) and ppl who have conflicting otps still put up with my ramblings about them as I put up with theirs.

No matter how good or bad a fandom is, we can all agree that without it the material it’s centred around wouldn’t be as popular as it is with a fandom. I’m so glad that fandom exists because without it, I wouldn’t have discovered some of my favourite shows and books. 📚❤️📺

Fandom can be a tricky place. There is toxicity in fandom but I am a firm believer that let others ship what makes them happy and autonomy to like any aspects of fandom. Respect and give respect in return. Agree to disagree.

I recently entered the BNHA fandom and it's always scary to get into such a huge fandom because there's discourse abound, but I've managed to stay away from it mostly. You are right, scuffles within fandom have always been there and will always be there. I feel like it's gotten worse over the last few years, though, since fandom as a concept has become a lot more mainstream. There are pros and cons.

So I've been in various fandoms for the past six years and I've never personally come across any toxicity and I was in Hetalia AND Steven Universe. I think a lot of it comes down to where you participate in fandom. I didn't go on tumblr so I missed the worst of it. However as fandoms are becoming larger and more mainstream there is an air of entitlement that I dislike. That creators must confirm or must comment on ships and fandom. Personally, I would prefer if we could divorce fandom from creator and keep them separate, death of the author and all that. Because it's not fair to harass creators and actors but also creators ought to be able to move on from their work and not keep pecking over the corpse. (Yes, I am talking about JK Rowling)

You should definitely make a video about a ranking in top 10 more toxic fandom right now, and how can we make these spaces as you so eloquently put it fundom again. As a the 100 fan I can say that that was one of the more toxic spaces I have ever encounter with the whole ship war bellarke vs clexa, those were dark ages and in a way they still are. I'm a bellarke shipper myself but I never found funny the bashing against clexa shipper and vice-versa, let's remember we are here for the same reason, and that's enjoying the show we love, the ways pf enjoyment might be different to each person but the love is the same. #StayKind.

I've been in fandoms for a few years now, even more and more I have felt unsafe to even discuss my ships. Being on twitter I have my little community, however, I find that we are becoming targeted. With people trying to be constant 'activist' idea and instead just attack, instead of just ignoring people's fictional work! I could not care about mainstream but I find more 'mainstream' fans just attacking others. But I still enjoy it! And I will continue to and I really enjoy your mindset, I wish people would just allow others to have fun :)

Thankfully I'm in a comfortable ship and part of fandom right now, but this reminds me of a difficult fandom moment I had some years ago. My recommendation is to keep yourself to a tiny fun little corner of your fandom. To each their own experience, but I think fandom is at its most fun when it's just like your secret nerdy club with a few friends... Also, Yay! Livestreams! I really miss them!

I enjoy being part of 'the big four' fandom, the people in there are great. I know some people didn't like it but you shouldn't kind what other people think. Enjoy what you love because it make you happy😇

Whenever I realise a comment section is a huge dumpster fire I know I should pull out but instead I go further in to get angry with complete strangers.

Despite all the hate and negativity that is going on in fandom culture I love it. I personally had mostly good experiences with the fandoms I was in. Every fandom has toxic people in it that is very true and not to be ignored BUT let's not forget the positive please. Fandoms can be so fun and can even save lives or create lives. I've met some of my best friends in the spn and queen fandom and I know people who have met their husband/wife through a fandom and have kids now! Without fandoms I would be an even greater mess than I already am. The friends I made help me through dark times and make me feel wanted and loved. Characters like Katara from avatar inspire me to work hard for what I want. Actors like Rachel Miner inspire me to be hopeful and never give up fighting. RU-vidr like Daniel Howell inspire me to be myself and live my truth. Musicians like Queen help me through panic attacks with their music. I would be in a much darker place without these people. I am eternally greatful that they are part of my life and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Ps: you slay that shirt gurl you look absolutely gorgeous

Big coincidence you're talking about this because I recently returned to the Beetlejuice fandom after discovering the musical, only to discover that a lot of the musical fans seem to be at war with the movie/cartoon fans (which I was originally). It's mostly over shipping, and it's gotten to to point where people are getting death threats. Really disheartening, especially when it's such a long-standing fandom that hasn't really had any big drama until now. Obviously there's no right or wrong way to enjoy something but we all essentially like the same thing so surely even those who strongly disagree can coexist?

Politics and shipping should never mix. That Candyman headline is making me very curious....

I love being in fandoms. My 2 main ones ive been in are Avatar/Korra and She-Ra 2018. While i have seen some toxicity (makorra vs Korrasami wasn't pretty) most of the time it was all fun. It great to talk to other people into the same things as you and i don't regret it one bit.

I know some in MHA are worried some fans who are super into BakuShima will act out and lash out at Horokoshi and other fans when some manga content that gives Kirishima/Ashido some fuel gets released in season 4 this fall. I think it’s going to be fine but it only takes one or two bad actors I guess...

I wonder whether Transformers fandom ever had this drama. I'm in this fandom, with some breaks, since G1. But other then some arguments between old school fans and new fans I can't remember anything overtly toxic. No shipping wars either. Maybe I'm just good at avoiding drama. On different subjects, will you cover Fire Emblem Three Houses and its same sex romance options drama? Because boy, this game hasn't come out yet, and shit storm already started.
