The wait is finally over here it is True North Legends Of Dogs And Men!!!
Musher Jonathan Hayes will attempt to go 261-mile backcountry through some of the most remote wilderness in Maine by the way of a team of 8 sled dogs. This expedition will recreate the distance run by legendary dog Togo and lead musher Leahnard Seppala almost 100 years ago as they raced to deliver the life-saving vaccine to the children of Nome Alaska.
The dog Balto got the credit for the rescue because they finished the final 30 miles. But Togo and Seppala were the true heroes traveling a brutal 261 miles. And what many don't know is Togo retired right here in Maine at Poland Spring Resort where he started a kennel. And almost 100 years later with the descendants of Togo Jonathan Hayes will take on the True North of Maine!
Take a seat and feel the cold wind rushing your face as he embarks on this life-changing adventure.
Witness their determination as he attempts a 261-mile sled dog run honoring the legendary dog Togo!
To help build a statue for Togo here in Maine at Poland Spring Maine you can donate here. gofund.me/fd5328fb
A massive thank you to everyone that has helped with this project. It means the world!!!

I watched this documentary after reading Jonathon’s book “The Togo 261”. I fell in love with dogs in the book, so it was heart warming to see them live in action. I’m so inspired by this story and now I dream of being a musher!

Love this story. I was a recreational musher for twenty years. Ran purebred Siberian teams of four to six dogs in southern New England - CT, MA, RI, and one trip to Tug Hill Plateau in NY. What you do is another world entirely. Your dogs are beautiful. I have a Border Collie mix now but there is nothing like a husky. My last husky passed in June 2022 and the house simply is not the same without one.

Mid Sept here in the foothills of the Alberta Rockies and waiting for weather to cool enough for some dryland training! My sled is all repaired after an accident on the 1st day of Spring 2023, due to trails chewed up by ATVs, a new coat of varnish and new runners...BRING on the SNOW😁👍👍 Thanks for the inspiration! Story of Sawyer brought a few tears to my eyes, I had a dog, Dash, who lost his eyesight to glaucoma in 2017. You could not slow him down, even blind he was the best puller on my team for another 2 years, until he took a fall, due to his blindness, which started arthritis problems. I had to say goodbye to him in August of 2022, at the age of 16 years, 2 months. His heart and his "never quit" attitude were still strong, however his body could no longer keep up. I know he is back pulling on the team North of the Rainbow Bridge and loving his new afterlife💖💖

For ice balls on dogs' feet, there is nothing better than Musher's Secret. You can get it on Amazon. It doesn't keep their feet warmer but it keeps the ice from forming between their pads. The Iditerod dogs use it. It's all natural so it doesn't matter if they lick it off later. It won't stain carpets or floors either. It's amazing stuff! You HAVE to get some, especially if you're a musher. And btw, I LOVE this film! Great job!!

great question- the mixed breed racing huskies (or Alaskan huskies as they are called) are much faster than our dogs- but have weaker feet. Beautiful documentary. As a Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamute owner remember that several Sled Dogs die during every Iditarod Sled Dog race because their idiot mushers literally drive them into exhaustion. Iditarod rules say mushers need to start with 12 to 14 Sled Dogs and finish with at least 5. The Iditarod is a Sled Dog race to death. Iditarod Sled Dog mushers are killers. It's that simple and true!

They don't automatically need booties if their feet are properly hardened. Their pads can get as hard as concrete! Dogs are naturally the ultimate endurance runners in cold climates; just like horses, their feet are designed to carry them vast distances.

Besides trying to dismiss the blizzard Balto went through and the hatred Seppala had for Kaasen--Maine is nowhere near as difficult as Alaska.
@MushMaine
@MushMaine 8 месяцев назад
Hi- Jonathan Hayes here (from the doc).Thanks for the comment! I was in Alaska last winter training and racing in multi day races. I mushed nearly a thousand miles in Alaska in just the month of January. No two trails are alike- Alaska or Maine. And while the blizzard and temps were severe during the original "race for life" there also a few advantages- fresh teams and fresh mushers every 30-50 miles. Large teams (much larger than my 8 in this expedition). Colder temps mean better trails for the dogs. Warmer temps mean slush- which increases the workload of the dogs exponentially. A wee traveled winter trail that dogs knew well there as apposed to breaking trail here etc. So I will say that Seppala and his team experienced much more brutal complications than we did on this expedition. But we did experience greater hardship than a great many other mushers that participated in that run 100 years ago.
