Deathbed stories with ‪@NurseHadley‬ that tell us something about life after death.
Episode 109 with Hospice Nurse Hadley tells the end-of-life stories of her Hospice patients that include seeing their deceased loved ones. Hadley also speaks on how a significant death she had to grieve in her life inspired the rest of her life and how this event completely shifted her religious beliefs. She just released her first book "The In-Between" which shows that end-of-life care can teach us as much about how to life as it does about how we die.

DEAD Talks with David Ferrugio engages death a little bit differently. Each new guest shares their experience with grieving or perspective on death in a way that shatters the “don’t talk about death” taboo. Grief doesn't end, it evolves. Having lost his father on September 11th when he was 12 he learned the importance of discussion and sharing other people's stories. Grief, loss, death, mourning, trauma or whatever it may be, DEAD Talks Podcast hopes to make it a little easier to talk about. You may cry; but, you also may laugh.

My dad died 13 days ago. We are broken. We sat for 3 days while he actively was dying. My brother and I left. My mom stayed she was watching his breath and dozed off. He then passed. I think he did it his way. He was and always will be my hero.

My father had health problems my whole life, I was very used to visits to hospitals. Calling 911 while he was having chest pains several times. I grew up with this. One time while he was in the hospital a nurse called and said he's not feeling too good and would I like to come visit? I was tired and said I'd come in tomorrow, as I had done dozens of times. He died that night. I decided (or something helped me) to forgive myself and dwell on the fact that he knew I loved him. I chose to remember the good times we spent together and I know I will see him (and others who meant so much to me) again. In addition to being a wonderful father. He shared two NDE's with me and told me of the warm blanket of pure love (he felt) as he walked in heaven and that he had spoken with Jesus and was allowed to return ( at that time) for his children. I value my life and want to be worthy of it, but when it's over I know I'll be going to my true home. Thanks for listening and God bless.

My Dad died during Covid outbreak in a nursing home and I wasn't able to go visit him before he passed because of their covid rules. He was only 64 and my heart has been broken ever since. I hope he knew I loved him with my whole heart 😪💔 It breaks my heart thinking he may have been scared. These stories bring me some peace.

The same thing happened with my dad. He waited until my Mom & I had left to do an errand. My sister, aunts & uncle were there. Heartbreaking scene when we returned. Back then we didn’t have cell phones so I had to call our parish priest to come back. The church secretary said that the father wasn’t in and couldn’t reach him. I told her what had happened and asked the priest come back. He never did. Hardest day in my life and still in high school. My dad kept looking at the corner in his room and said “not yet”. Mom was sure he was telling an angel that he couldn’t pass until his family got there. They got there the afternoon before he passed.

Thank you so much for sharing this! My precious Mama passed away at 1:06 on Thanksgiving Day 2022 so of course she is greatly missed ESPECIALLY right now with the Holidays. She passed away from COPD and in May of 2022 she had an appointment with her Pulmonologist and he wanted to do some tests so instead of having her go back and forth for the tests he admitted her to the hospital. That night she was diagnosed with Covid and that same night my precious Grandfather who had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for many years had been diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer just before May and had gone through Radiation to fight it and the radiation wiped him out so he passed the same night Mama had been hospitalized. A week later my sister and I took her home to reside with us hoping she’d snap back. She and my dad’s home was 2 hours away from us and an hour from the closest hospital to them so therefore she stayed with us and closer to her Drs. My sister worked so I was Mom’s main caregiver though we did end up in the last few months hiring an incredible home bound hospice service to help with her care needs. In the last month Mama had been getting up to use her potty chair and while I was in another room on that Halloween morning she decided to try it alone and fell and fractured her pelvis and her hospice nurse told me that unfortunately when they fall it leads them downhill quickly so on Thanksgiving day she passed but for that last month she would look up towards the ceiling and just smile the prettiest smile and hold her arms up as if she were embracing someone and she would talk to my Grandmother who passed away many years ago when I was 7. I’m 54 now and then the last 2 weeks she constantly called me Mommy and I never corrected her because it made me so very happy to know that my Grandmother was waiting there to take her home. ❤️🙏🏻🕊️♾️

I am heartened by stories of those who knew they were about to pass. I will have no one to advocate for me and I am terrified of dying in a hospital against my will. I hope I know too so I can walk out into the woods like a cat. Nurse Hadley and all hospice nurses are blessed and a blessing so that death can be a beautiful experience. I am not afraid to die. I am afraid of being forced to live in a hospital. Thank you nurse Hadley for helping people be less afraid.

I have learned in the last week what a hospice house is (Nurse Hadley talks about her next project was to open one). It is absolutely beautiful and the staff there don’t have turn overs like a hospital ward or nursing home. I moved a fairly young (62) neighbor without much family remaining and none in our state into one last week and don’t regret it and know where I want to be regardless of how much family I have left or around. THAT is the way to live and then die! Welcome to ask any questions, I’m a newbie to dealing with hospice and death this close to me, but learning quickly.

When my husband passed away about a week or so I started to knowise shadows around his side of the bed and I just knew he wasn’t going to make it much longer. Then the morning after he passed away during his surgery I went into the bathroom and the bathroom door flung open with such a force and I just knew it was him making sure I was home safe and he was checking on my daughter and me.

My mom dies from Lewy-body dementia. It was very odd when she passed. She was in a type of coma, for lack of a better term. Unresponsive, on morphine, and with her eyes closed. My sister and I were right at her side, telling her we loved her, with no response from her, of course, when all of a sudden she opened her eyes very very wide. We thought she was looking at us, but it was as if she was looking through us. She looked very surprised, closed her eyes, and passed within minutes. Maybe it wasn't odd, after reading everyone's comments, but at the time, we couldn't believe she was even able to open her eyes, or look surprised. I pray it was our dad, or another loved one she was seeing. 💛

As a person who suffers with PTSD. Which is sadly the after effects of domestic violence. I have experienced hallucinations before. Now, hallucinations don’t really make a lot of sense. They’re fragmented pieces of trauma that relive themselves or create new experiences that for me, revolve around the fear of being harmed/hurt in some way or fearing this will happen to someone I care about. The source of course makes sense ( as I was severely harmed and almost killed on one occasion). But the hallucinations themselves aren’t consistent with any type of fluidity to them. Also, extreme stress tends to trigger them. I’m certainly not calm before or during the experience. They are extremely traumatic. So I believe that these people are having a real spiritual encounter with a loved one at the end of life. They are calm, and explaining their personal experience in a rational way. Almost as if you could see this happening yourself. I think it’s a beautiful thing ❤

my late mother always had a sixth sense, when she was really ill and in hospital she whispered to me, that the man in the next bed was going to pass away, it was surprising as he was sitting up and talking, had told us he was to be discharged at 10am next morning...his cough and fainting was ruled as easily managed at home. Mum was adamant..she hadnt slept all night as she saw four white figures standing over his bed, keeping vigil all night, the sight kept her frightened and awake..two women, two men. Of course i thought mum was imagining things.. When i visited the next evening, i walked past the empty bed. Greeted mum, chatted for a moment then i asked her " so your friend went home"?.."no! how awful..in the middle of the night, we heard him give a shout and he clutched his chest...he died".. Seems he had been misdiagnosed and his 'cough' was heart failure... mum had so many stories. Miss you so my darling Beni 1937-2018 🕊️

I had a good friend who was having a heart attack but he didn't recognize that he was having a heart attack because he wasn’t have pain in his arms and in his chest. Fortunately, he’s a surgical tech and his co-workers sent him to the ER right away. He had a blocked artery because he eats garbage food and a lifetime of it had caught up with him. He had to have surgery and he told me that he was aware that he was lifting out of his body. He tdme that he was pretty scared and kept rhinking, “Oh man, this is it. This is it.” He talked about being able to see his surgical team working on him and the next thing he knew, he fell back into his body and woke up in ICU. When his surgeon came by to debrief him about his surgery, the surgeon says, “You scared me there! Your heart stopped beating and we had to resuscitate you. But you’re doing well so get some rest and hang in there.”

A very similar thing happened to a relative after a car accident. He coded multiple times in surgery and during those incidents he watched himself being worked on from up near the ceiling. Afterward, he was able to tell staff what people said and did in those moments with such accuracy that it shocked them.

A segment from 'Saved by the Light of the Buddha Within'... My new understandings of what many call 'God -The Holy Spirit' - resulting from some of the extraordinary ongoing after-effects relating to my NDE. during September 1970.. Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what some scientists are now referring to as the unified field of consciousnesses. In other words, it’s the essence of all existence and non-existence - the ultimate creative force behind planets, stars, nebulae, people, animals, trees, fish, birds, and all phenomena, manifest or latent. All matter and intelligence are simply waves or ripples manifesting to and from this core source. Consciousness (enlightenment) is itself the actual creator of everything that exists now, ever existed in the past, or will exist in the future - right down to the minutest particles of dust - each being an individual ripple or wave. The big difference between chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and most other conventional prayers is that instead of depending on a ‘middleman’ to connect us to our state of inner enlightenment, we’re able to do it ourselves. That’s because chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo allows us to tap directly into our enlightened state by way of this self-produced sound vibration. ‘Who or What Is God?’ If we compare the concept of God being a separate entity that is forever watching down on us, to the teachings of Nichiren, it makes more sense to me that the true omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence of what most people perceive to be God, is the fantastic state of enlightenment that exists within each of us. Some say that God is an entity that’s beyond physical matter - I think that the vast amount of information continuously being conveyed via electromagnetic waves in today’s world gives us proof of how an invisible state of God could indeed exist. For example, it’s now widely known that specific data relayed by way of electromagnetic waves has the potential to help bring about extraordinary and powerful effects - including an instant global awareness of something or a mass emotional reaction. It’s also common knowledge that these invisible waves can easily be used to detonate a bomb or to enable NASA to control the movements of a robot as far away as the Moon or Mars - none of which is possible without a receiver to decode the information that’s being transmitted. Without the receiver, the data would remain impotent. In a very similar way, we need to have our own ‘receiver’ switched on so that we can activate a clear and precise understanding of our own life, all other life and what everything else in existence is. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day helps us to achieve this because it allows us to reach the core of our enlightenment and keep it switched on. That’s because Myoho-Renge-Kyo represents the identity of what scientists now refer to as the unified field of consciousnesses. To break it down - Myoho represents the Law of manifestation and latency (Nature) and consists of two alternating states. For example, the state of Myo is where everything in life that’s not obvious to us exists - including our stored memories when we’re not thinking about them - our hidden potential and inner emotions whenever they’re dormant - our desires, our fears, our wisdom, happiness, karma - and more importantly, our enlightenment. The other state, ho, is where everything in Life exists whenever it becomes evident to us, such as when a thought pops up from within our memory - whenever we experience or express our emotions - or whenever a good or bad cause manifests as an effect from our karma. When anything becomes apparent, it merely means that it’s come out of the state of Myo (dormancy/latency) and into a state of ho (manifestation). It’s the difference between consciousness and unconsciousness, being awake or asleep, or knowing and not knowing. The second law - Renge - Ren meaning cause and ge meaning effect, governs and controls the functions of Myoho - these two laws of Myoho and Renge, not only function together simultaneously but also underlies all spiritual and physical existence. The final and third part of the tri-combination - Kyo, is the Law that allows Myoho to integrate with Renge - or vice versa. It’s the great, invisible thread of energy that fuses and connects all Life and matter - as well as the past, present and future. It’s also sometimes termed the Universal Law of Communication - perhaps it could even be compared with the string theory that many scientists now suspect exists. Just as the cells in our body, our thoughts, feelings and everything else is continually fluctuating within us - all that exists in the world around us and beyond is also in a constant state of flux - constantly controlled by these three fundamental laws. In fact, more things are going back and forth between the two states of Myo and ho in a single moment than it would ever be possible to calculate or describe. And it doesn’t matter how big or small, famous or trivial anything or anyone may appear to be, everything that’s ever existed in the past, exists now or will exist in the future, exists only because of the workings of the Laws ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ - the basis of the four fundamental forces, and if they didn’t function, neither we nor anything else could go on existing. That’s because all forms of existence, including the seasons, day, night, birth, death and so on, are moving forward in an ongoing flow of continuation - rhythmically reverting back and forth between the two fundamental states of Myo and ho in absolute accordance with Renge - and by way of Kyo. Even stars are dying and being reborn under the workings of what the combination ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’ represents. Nam, or Namu - which mean the same thing, are vibrational passwords or keys that allow us to reach deep into our life and fuse with or become one with ‘Myoho-Renge-Kyo’. On a more personal level, nothing ever happens by chance or coincidence, it’s the causes that we’ve made in our past, or are presently making, that determine how these laws function uniquely in each of our lives - as well as the environment from moment to moment. By facing east, in harmony with the direction that the Earth is spinning, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo for a minimum of, let’s say, ten minutes daily to start with, any of us can experience actual proof of its positive effects in our lives - even if it only makes us feel good on the inside, there will be a definite positive effect. That’s because we’re able to pierce through the thickest layers of our karma and activate our inherent Buddha Nature (our enlightened state). By so doing, we’re then able to bring forth the wisdom and good fortune that we need to challenge, overcome and change our adverse circumstances - turn them into positive ones - or manifest and gain even greater fulfilment in our daily lives from our accumulated good karma. This also allows us to bring forth the wisdom that can free us from the ignorance and stupidity that’s preventing us from accepting and being proud of the person that we indeed are - regardless of our race, colour, gender or sexuality. We’re also able to see and understand our circumstances and the environment far more clearly, as well as attract and connect with any needed external beneficial forces and situations. As I’ve already mentioned, everything is subject to the law of Cause and Effect - the ‘actual-proof-strength’ resulting from chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo always depends on our determination, sincerity and dedication. For example, the levels of difference could be compared to making a sound on a piano, creating a melody, producing a great song, and so on. Something else that’s very important to always respect and acknowledge is that the Law (or if you prefer God) is in everyone and everything. NB: There are frightening and disturbing sounds, and there are tranquil and relaxing sounds. It’s the emotional result of any noise or sound that can trigger off a mood or even instantly change one. When chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo each day, we are producing a sound vibration that’s the password to our true inner-self - this soon becomes apparent when you start reassessing your views on various things - such as your fears and desires etc. The best way to get the desired result when chanting is not to view things conventionally - rather than reaching out to an external source, we need to reach into our own lives and bring our needs and desires to fruition from within - including the good fortune and strength to achieve any help that we may need. Chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo also reaches out externally and draws us towards, or draws towards us, what we need to make us happy from our environment. For example, it helps us to be in the right place at the right time - to make better choices and decisions and so forth. We need to think of it as a seed within us that we’re watering and bringing sunshine to for it to grow, blossom and bring forth fruit or flowers. It’s also important to understand that everything we need in life, including the answer to every question and the potential to achieve every dream, already exists within us.

I am doubtful that these experiences are a spiritual phenomenon. I am leaning towards believing that is a physiological function that results from the body's chemicals affecting the sensory part of the brain and causing a type of hallucination. I do, however, believe that such occurences can provide comfort to the dying person as well as the family.
