For Episode 3 of Illuminated, digital artist & NFT icon @beeple discusses the role of digital art, the evolution of intellectual property, the pursuit of success and so much more. We also check out Beeple Studios in Charleston, South Carolina before I transform his signed book into an Illuminated design.
Beeple, the artistic persona of Michael Joseph Winkelmann, is an American digital artist, graphic designer, and animator. Although he’s been creating diverse digital creations, including short films and animations for most of his adult life, he’s become most known for his ongoing "Everydays" project - a series of daily artworks spanning over 16 years. His work often blends the fantastical with the political, using pop culture references to deliver social commentary.
Beeple gained significant recognition in the art world through his involvement with Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). His "Everydays: the First 5000 Days," a collage of his daily creations, became the first purely digital artwork sold by a major auction house (Christie’s), attaining a record-breaking $69 million in 2021. The piece was purchased by cryptocurrency investor Vignesh Sundaresan, also known as Metakovan. This sale catapulted Beeple to the forefront of the NFT movement and ignited discussions about the value and ownership of digital art.
Beyond the headlines, Beeple remains dedicated to his craft. He continues to create diverse and thought-provoking digital art, pushing the boundaries of the medium and exploring the potential of emerging technologies like NFTs. His impact extends beyond the art world, influencing broader conversations about creativity, innovation, and the future of art collecting in the digital age.
Special thanks to KDean & Scotty for making this happen.
