You are a visionary, and an excellent teacher : You have patience, devotion, and a keen ear for the guitar. Many teachers just can't be bothered doing tuning in the lesson. This should be compulsory, at least at the Conservatory, where I can vouch that they left everyone get on with their own out of tune ness. "Let's get on with the lesson" The effect of playing an out of tune guitar is like the effect you get on your teeth when someone scratches a blackboard with their long fingernails. And depending on the temperature, the humidity, and your disposition for the day, it can be mission impossible. Not to mention that if your nail shape is not in good condition, some harmonic overtones will not be present, making this even worse. No one seems to know the hardship of a professional classical/ or other acoustic guitar style, with regard to a piano student or any other non-fretted instrument which allows for corrections on the go. You just sit down at the piano and play, and if you are pickie, then you call the piano tuner. I wasted many years of my life in search for the golden ratio of tuning, but I did have some good, gratifying experiences from time to time. Once again, thank you for taking the time to post this incredible tutorial and for blowing away some of the common urban myths about tuners.

Thanks for the video. I actually thought all this true temperament stuff was just a bunch of snake oil but your demonstration is very good. I can actually hear the exact differences. Open position is more or less the same but as you go higher up the neck regular temperament is not consistent with inversions. (As you demonstrated). Possibly I might consider getting one in the future. Thank you for the great video.

Thank you for explaining in detail. The FAQ from True Temperament mentions they previously offered other temperaments, e.g. "Meantone and True Temperament 12 tone equal" but currently only offers the Thidell Formula One temperament. Is that what the Sueño Series uses? I would be curious to know how it differs from equal temperament, exactly.
@johannes81
@johannes81 2 года назад
Thank you for your question Peter. Yes for the Sueño series we use the Thidell formula with some of my own modifications. Basically if you download the offset sheet in the video description you can see exactly how it defers from equal temperament. It is basically a unique temperament that works in all keys but still favours the nature of the guitar and the keys we mostly use. It should also be mentioned that this special temperament was not mathematically calculated by developed from Anders' experiments over 20 years. It should also be said that this system was originally developed for electric guitar which is much more predictable than classical guitar. It has taken me about two years to together with Anders find a way to calibrate the TT system to classical guitar.

Hi! You absolutely have to look for "precise temperament tunning", by robert edward grant. Its hard to find the exact article, but he made some posts about it on his facebook page. There is a very very good vid on youtibe about this specific temperament.

Engasjerende och informativ video, takk. Mycket bra ljudliga demonstrasjoner! Två ting kan man kanskje kommentara (?) Petersson Strobe Tuners fungera, i hvert fall før mig, riktigt bra.

Are the positions of the frets affected by the type of strings you use? I.e. would the measurement be different if it is a steel-string guitar, or simply using strings with different gauge than originally intended?

Are the offsets ONLY for open strings? E.g. if I want to set the intonation at the 12th fret, do I have to use the offsets there as well or switch to "regular tuning mode"?
@cashway0420
@cashway0420 5 месяцев назад
They would be for the 12th strings too. Example: if E is -2 then open E would be -2, 12th fret on E string would be -2, 2nd fret d-string would be -2, 9th fret g-string would be -2, etc...

Can you please explain why your "chromatic tuning offset" (at 31:43) says G should be plus 4 and D should be plus 2, but then your "open string tuning offsets" says dropped G should be plus 2 and dropped D should be minus 2? Can you also explain why the high E (1st string) and low E (sixth string) are not tuned identically according to your open string tuning offsets? Thank you!
@johannes81
@johannes81 2 года назад
This is really interesting and should ideally be experienced in reality to understand. However this also applies to regular frets... The higher notes decay quicker and the lower notes stay more stable. So if you play 4th string D together with the low D. although on the attack the forth string will be a bit higher but very quickly it will settle and therefore as the notes decay will be more in harmony. In my way of calibrating the TT frets on the Sueno guitars I also make the higher notes on the first string slightly higher as well. Thank you for asking@

@@johannes81 Thanks so much for the explanation! Ok, so your "chromatic tuning offset" chart only applies to the octave between the E on the second fret of the 4th string up to the Eb on the fourth fret of the 2nd string? What about if you use a capo on the fifth fret for example? Would you use these same offsets, or sweeten them somewhat?

@@bluegrasstuesdays9534 Good question but NO answer?
@johannes81
@johannes81 2 года назад
@@bluegrasstuesdays9534 no the offsets basically apply for the whole fretboard With a capo recommend tuning the open strings and they apply the capo carefully with an even pressure. Then you could use the chromatic offsets to double check the capo tuning.

Det beror lite på varje gitarr, men i sista versionen rekommenderar jag -2 som standard. Du kan gå lägre...

So we tune true temperament frets at offsit on open strings just to facilitate true temperament on fretted notes. Couldnt they make the open strings at 0 offsits and any resulting temperament difference of the fretted notes by the adjusting(compensating) the bend(curve) of the frets? That could have been a perfect invention if it was mathematically/scientifically possible. In this way all notes(open and fretted) will be at 0 offsit on any fretboard which why they make this in the first place. Also, are true temperament frets have the same bends(compensation) accross all guitar brands or would each guitar maker have different true temperament fret compensation.

I apologize, I did not watch the entire video, but it would be interesting if you covered how to tune the guitar for different keys. I often having problems with my guitar being out of tune in certain parts of a composition. Usually I can fiddle around and try to figure out how to tune it correctly, but it's really just fumbling in the dark and it would be very useful to have some concrete guidelines like you provided here.

01:20 I've seen concerns about fret maintenance and that TT is not equal temperament. I notice at no point do you explain what True Temperament actually is or what problem it solves or why you need "offsets".
@johannes81
@johannes81 2 года назад
This is a very good question, and I though about it myself and discussed it with Anders. Basically this is a temperament that favours the nature of the guitar. As mentioned in the video a pure equal temperament as you get with a synthesiser can sound a bit artificial. With real instruments like violin there is an intuitive way to intonate. This system does work in all keys but still favours in particular the keys we use most. In any case what I think is important to understand is that what the problem with straight frets is not that it's not equal temperament but that it is inconsistent through out the fret board. The guitar is the instrument in the world on which we can play the same note on so many different places. For example the open first string e can literally be played on all the strings (6th sting harmonic 5th fret). Therefore the most revolutionary and satisfying thing with TT is that we are getting all of those notes much more consistently no matter in which position we artistically chose to play them.
