Here it is, our first documented rocket launch from Cape Canaveral! We were just 8.13 miles (13.09 km) from SLC-37B for this historic occasion, at the end of Route 401. After the first attempt for the morning of 08/11/18 scrubbed, we made the decision to drive up to KSC again for the next launch window, which was the following day at 03:31 to 04:36 local time.
After much preparation, we had seven cameras and two mics ready to catch the action and record the real sound of the Delta IV Heavy. The crowd was full of excitement as the countdown for 03:31 continued without delay. About 40 seconds after we saw the brilliant light of ignition of the RS-68A engines, the incredible sound of 2.1 million pounds of force (9420 kN) from this massive rocket reached us and quickly drowned out the audio of the live stream.

The Delta rocket family was developed from the Douglas PGM-17 Thor, designed in 1957. These designs were continuously updated by Douglas starting in 1960, and later by McDonnell Douglas from 1967. Delta IV was proposed by McDonnell Douglas and Boeing (shortly after the merger of the companies) to fit the needs of the US Air Force. The newest member of the Delta family, the Delta IV Heavy, carries on the legacy of remarkable 50's engineering, and has been in operation since 2004.
