John Leventhal returns to go in-depth on his first solo album, Rumble Strip. We discuss his process of composing, recording, and the gear he used to create the 16 poignant tracks on the album. Leventhal also discusses his signature acoustic guitar tones that utilize both the natural "acoustic" sound, plus an "electric" sound hole pickup run-through effects and a tube amplifier. He also weighs in on the 30th-anniversary re-release of The Wheel, his first collaboration with his wife, noted singer-songwriter, Rosanne Cash.
John is a multi-Grammy Award-winning producer and musician. A short list of Leventhal's collaborators includes Marc Cohn, Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, William Bell, and Sarah Jarosz.

John Leventhal is brilliant. I first heard his playing on Shawn Colvin's "Few Small Repairs" and have been haunted by him ever since. Excellent show Zac!

I have the exact same inner critic, but don’t have a fraction of John’s talent. Talk a bad combo…

This is fabulous news. John is such a consistent talent and has been involved in so many great projects. His previous side project, Mojo Mancini was a hidden treasure. So excited to hear his solo album.

One of my absolute favorite producers & guitar savants. I knew him from Shawn Colvin's "Steady On" then Mark Cohn - then I was hooked! If I could choose any producer in the world to work with, it would be him! Thanks for the interview, Zach!

Is he using open C tuning for JL's Hymn No.2? You touched on it but cut it short. Great interview!

Thanks for posting this video. Great interview. Mark is a master Americana guitar player and so soulful & bluesy. I love his record productions. If you have a decent set of ears, you can always tell when it's his work..same with his guitar playing. I saw him with Rosanne Cash & he is a fine pianist too & an astute musical arranger. It was so much fun to meet him & Rosanne after the show. They were both nice to us.

Does anyone know the settings for this videos opening riff? The guitar used along with the Amp & slide used glass or brass. I just love that opening tone/sound.

I’ve always loved his playing. I first became aware o him on an old Eric Anderson album that he Produced. I met him briefly at the Richmond Folk Festival that his Wife was the main attraction . He was walking around with a big Lemonade. He was very friendly, even let me take his picture.

A couple of days ago, I listened to the album straight through. It’s wonderful. Quirky, sparse, and effortlessly tasteful. Thanks JL.

Zac, great as always. When John plays live which pickup would he send to the FOH and which pickup would go to the amp? Thanks in advance mate. I'm not sure he mentioned that. For example would the soundhole pick up go to the amp and the undersaddle to FOH?
