The Telegraph goes on a top secret mission to an undisclosed English location where one man and his dog are digging up a fortune in rare black truffles.
Contrary to popular belief, France and Italy are not the only source of truffles: England has them in droves, but is only just reawakening to the idea, and one of the people at the head of the drive to get us buying British is Tom Lywood, part of a re-emerging breed of professional hunters.
Today, we are working his truffle dogs, Valentino and Brenda, two adorable white Italian water hounds. Their obsession with the smell of the truffles underground in the well-maintained wood of beech, hazel and birch trees we are exploring is producing remarkable results. Snuffling away, they unearth truffles all over the place -- the real trick is to get the pair to hand them over: a bag of smoked frankfurters proves persuasive.
