In kitchens around the world, truffles represent culinary excellence and prestige, but in the forest they’re just another flora fighting to exist, using somewhat…unusual methods. In the lush woodland of the Pacific Northwest, these modest mushrooms’ adaptation strategies are promoting not only their own survival, but that of their forest ecosystem at large.
Untold Earth explores the seeming impossibilities behind our planet’s strangest, most unique natural wonders. From fragile, untouched ecosystems to familiar but unexplained occurrences in our own backyard, this series chases insight into natural phenomena through the voices that know them best.
Untold Earth is produced in partnership with Atlas Obscura and Nature.

Well actually......every sip of water you ever drank passed through the urinary tracts of uncountable mammal, dinosaur and other reptile, arthropod, mollusk, etc. creatures. So there's that.

You can also see a similar relationship in Pinus radiata plantations, where I've seen the sand they've been planted in has become like a sponge from all the fungal hyphae. Also, when Douglas Fir was introduced to NZ (a very bad idea, it's highly invasive) they had to treat them with fungal spores to get them to grow properly. Which makes me wonder if those were truffle spores they used and if we now have some tasty truffles lurking in certain areas infested with Douglas Firs.

Seems like another reason not to clear cut as forestry programs of universities in the area were advocating within the last few decades. They seemed to say that if you are selective then the proper native plants won't grow in the area that was selectively cut, but if you clear cut then you can plant everything that these habitats are supposed to have without one kind of plant taking over and leaving no room for the plants that were supposed to be there.

Someone’s never grown mushrooms. Using manure for mushrooms is disgusting. Old school used sawdust. New school uses coconut fiber. They don’t even grow on manure in the wild.
@EnkiduShamesh
@EnkiduShamesh 27 дней назад
@@peanutbutterjellyfish2665 I assume they are referring to psylocybe cubensis, which is most commonly found growing in cow manure in fields. That particular mushroom appears to have adapted to the human domestication of cattle, as that is it's preferred habitat. Not all mushrooms eat wood.

@@EnkiduShamesh Not in Washington. Psilocybe cubensis fungi grow in warm temperatures, moist ground and above 90% humidity in the air. Which means you will only find psilocybin cubensis fungi there. You won’t find a wild strain of cubensis in Washington. It’s too cold. We have psilocybin. So the only climate where you will find it in manure, is tropical and sometimes subtropical climates. Most of the cattle in the US are raised in deserts. So cubensis are associated with cattle below the 32° parallel. It might happen in florida.

You'll never find it growing in poop. Stop watching RU-vid. You'll find it where food was left to rot and under dead fall of any kind which holds moisture and encourages rot. It is only relevant to poop because giant cow pies do the same, keep moisture close and cause the normal ground cover to rot, making the perfect environment for fungi. This shit doesn't take a bunch of research or these hipster dipshits and their forums to figure out. I figured it out when I was 16, shit faced drunk, stoned to pieces, and tripping balls on said mushrooms. Only idiots root through shit for something to eat. Or desperate people, but that's the exception. Fungus relies on natural events to break down the defenses of other plants to allow it to steal the necessary nutrients to grow and reproduce. Shit, particularly cow shit, has already had all those things extracted from it, hence the cow, with a massive and highly efficient digestive system, discards it. Then it will be processed further by insects with even more efficient systems back into soil. Fungus is not efficient nor capable of breaking things and extraction, so relies on nutrient rich and unexploited sources for its survival. And now you have a practical and basic understanding of how it works without a bunch of fluff and bullshit, literally, that was learned from a lifetime of eating things either planted or foraged, and honed to the point that only a lazy, drug addled young person could manage when blessed with a bit of common sense, critical thinking, and logic that used to be taught in American schools and parents that learned the same way. More important than what you learned, is passing it on to someone else free of charge in hopes of it sprouting and spreading to others before its too late. Learn responsibly, friend.

Still the Mono-Culture Wood-Farms/Forests aren't exactly resilient to bug infestations or forest fires like mixed/primeval Forests are! So, while this might enhance their "usefulness", I don't think it's a long-term sustainable practice to have these Mono-Culture woods (of course I'm not talking about Tundra Fir-Forests, which are primeval Forests in their own sense and exist because of plant adaptations. But in the context of man-made "Wood Plantations", my point stands...they might become more and more of a hazard in extreme weather, that is supposed to happen more frequently in the Future...
