We visit Trujillo, land of conquerors, with great protagonists such as Francisco Pizarro, Francisco de Orellana and Diego García de Paredes.
Juan Pizarro de Orellana, Francisco Pizarro's cousin and the first mayor of Cuzco, built the Renaissance palace known as ‘Casa de la Contratación’, so called because it was the place where those who wanted to go to Peru enlisted. Cervantes stayed there during his journey to the Monastery of Guadalupe.
Along the Ronda de las Almenas we arrive at the Puerta de San Andrés, one of the seven gates in the wall, defended by the Escobar family's fortress-house, where its rectangular tower, dating from the end of the 15th century, stands out. This is the birthplace of María Escobar, the first woman to take wheat and barley seed to Peru, and Fray Diego de Chaves, Dominican confessor to Felipe II.
The Alberca de Trujillo, of Umayyad origin, is a pool of water dug out of the rock, used by the population as well as to irrigate the fields of San Lázaro and San Juan.
We continue on to the House of the Bejarano family (15th century), built on top of a 13th century Alcázar, which defended the access through the Triunfo or ‘de la Victoria’ gate, which is the place through which the Christian troops entered the town in the final reconquest of the town in 1233. The Bejaranos, natives of Beja, in the Portuguese Algarve, took part in the 13th century in the reconquest of Trujillo.
We walk along the outside of the wall, built by the Muslims in the 10th century, although reformed and extended between the 11th and 16th centuries, to return to the inside through the Coria gate, through which the road to this town used to leave, and which allowed access to the orchards.
Santa María la Mayor was built on the site of an old mosque after the reconquest of the town. The main conquerors, noblemen and nobles of Trujillo are buried in the church, including the tomb of Diego García de Paredes.
The Royal Academy of Letters and Arts of Extremadura has its headquarters in the Palace of Lorenzana, the Renaissance palace of the Pizarro Hinojosa family, lords of Torrecillas, and since 1642 Marquises of Lorenzana.
We continue up to the castle of Trujillo, of Moorish origin, which has no residential rooms or tower of outstanding height. In the time of Pedro I it was chosen for the king's treasurer to guard the riches of the Crown, because it was considered one of the most secure fortresses in the kingdom.
Returning to the lower area, we come to the church of Santiago, built at the end of the 12th century, when the orders of Santiago and Pereiro inhabited and defended Trujillo. Next to it is the Puerta de Santiago, flanked by two towers of the wall, which give it a marked defensive character.
We continue along Calle Ballesteros, next to the Torre del Alfiler, once demolished by the Catholic Queen, which owes its name to a metal rod nailed to its dome.
In the Plaza Mayor, from the 16th century onwards, the noble families built their palatial houses, with architecture typical of the 15th and 16th centuries, such as the palaces of Chaves-Cárdenas, Carvajal Vargas, Piedras Albas and the Marqués de la Conquista.
The church of San Martín de Tours was completed in the 16th century, and for a time was the meeting place of the Trujillo Council. The equestrian statue of Pizarro, made by Carlos Rumsey and inaugurated in 1929, stands in a prominent place in the square.
