I love going to the gym, getting a good workout, and taking care of my body. I strongly recommend exercise to all of my patients as well. That being said, sometimes things in the gym can get a little... weird. Today we take a look at some of the wildest TikToks that take place in the gym. Specifically we talk about bench press, squat, weird exercises on gym machines, hyper flexibility, racking your weights, warm ups, cool downs, PR's, max sets, clean and jerk, resistance bands, snowboarding, pink eye, dunking, vasoconstriction, dead lifting, sprained ankles, bulking, energy drinks, treadmills, and bears.
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

better to be safe and start light with more reps and very gradually increase weight than with with tons of weight right off the bat just to show off to other guys in the gym who don't really care.

8:40 I was there, it was INSANE. I have never heard a sound so loud before in my life, everyone was SO happy for her. Sure, the game was far from normal gameplay, but the fact that she was able to make a basket was simply amazing. Everyone in the gymnasium was so respectful; you could hear a pin drop aside from the sound guidance and you could just tell everyone was hoping she would make a basket, then she did, and the room ERUPTED. It was so cool. For context, this basketball game was our annual unified basketball game, which is a cool thing that allows the special needs students a chance to experience sports in a way they probably wouldn't have otherwise. Such a magical moment. I come from a small town so I was shocked to see this on Dr. Mike's yt channel!

Just yesterday, there were a couple of teenage boys on the bench press, and the boy failed the rep, and the other boy could only get one side of the bar up. I ran over and lifted the bar up, after seeing that it was resting on the boy’s chest. Neither one even looked at me, lat alone said thank you. They were probably pretty embarrassed that a teenage girl had to save them🤣🤣 Anyway, just glad that they’re ok 😁

@aatashiwadoremi
@aatashiwadoremi Год назад
As someone who has EDS (a collagen disorder), PLEASE DO NOT try to regain that kind of flexibility!! It is not healthy for your joints! That kind of hypermobility can damage the tendons and ligaments, even if they seem fine. Trust me, you don’t want your ankles to do that. You can end up getting injuries from stretching things that aren’t supposed to stretch like that. (Flexibility is a good thing! I’m not saying don’t be flexible, only be cautious of being overly flexible!)

Your earliest videos (and even not-so-early, from when I started watching in late 2018) felt like I was just watching a smart doctor teach me smart things, and over time the vibe of your videos has shifted - from just watching an educational video, to making your audience feel more involved like they're hanging out with you. Injury story: One night last summer I was doing chest day at the gym. It was like 11pm at night (24 hour gym) and I had the place all to myself. I was doing decline dumbbell presses. I had two sets of weights. One heavy, and one lighter. I was on my 2nd or 3rd set with the lighter weights, but I had set the other weights too close to my drop zone. I was on my last rep before failure, pushing as hard as I can, then I dropped the weights down. I got my right ring finger sandwiched between the weight I was holding and the weight on the ground! Boy that hurt like a SOB! Luckily no one was around to hear the horrible expletives coming out of my mouth. I went to the bathroom to put my finger under cool water to ease with the pain. It bruised and I could barely move it. I assumed if I shook it off for a few minutes it would be fine. But it wasn’t. I cut the workout short and went home to sleep it off. I woke up the next morning and my finger was purple and even stiffer. I went to the urgent care center to have it x-rayed. Before the x-ray, the doctor walked into my exam room and said, “Bro, I don’t even have to x-ray that to tell you that finger’s definitely broken.”

The worst gym injury I've ever seen was a video my FIL sent to my husband. This woman was doing idk, leg presses I think (the one where you're sitting with weights pressing against your feet and extend your legs out). She was obviously pressing too much. And she had a spotter beside her, but someone else distracted him for just a moment, and that was the moment when she extended her legs out fully -- and locked her knees. The weights pressed back and bent her knees backwards, and all she could do was scream in agony. The video didn't continue far enough to see the spotter get her out, we just saw him whip around and reach for the machine before it ended. I can only imagine the damage she sustained from that or the recovery involved.

I used to be hyper flexible in my shoulders too, & was able to do that thing a lot, but I regret it now because I have a weak rotator cuff in my right shoulder. It tends to pop out of place for the tiniest of things (like tossing a jacket or something in the back seat of my car, for example)

As a cable park wakeboardrr, I feel the pain of that snowboarder. Getting slammed like that is the worst… all the breath in you gets flung up and you can’t breath, you get serious back pain for weeks, and just laying down hurts. I feel for him (literally happened to me yesterday… landed on my back edge after a backflip 360, slammed down like that and still feel in 36 hours later)

10:02 This is an interesting one to me. I use wrist wraps for benching (and deadlifting, but for other reasons) because I naturally have very weak wrists and as a pianist, I want maximum protection from injuries. I could do it without the wraps, but it would hurt my wrists after a few reps

That bit at 8:00 hurts like no other, adding weight on is worse. I power lifted in hs and was lifting after school when a football player came by and added a 25lb plate to one side while I was locked out during a bench press. I was already at my max weight so things went bad quickly, my ehlers danlos saved me from a full tear of the rotator cuff but it was strained and the shoulder dislocated. I can hardly imagine what all went down for that guy

In the primary care office I worked in, we had a “walk in” (which is always fantastic😒) he filet his leg open jumping up into ply wood. Waited a week for it to turn green and smell awful before walking PAST THE ER to our office and asked if we could “clean it up.” I can’t unsee it…. ID doc came over to see him and admitted him for surgery from our office. No idea what ever came of that situation. Never saw him again. It looked like someone sliced the center of a sausage, pushed the meat up, and colored it green and yellow. 🤮

In the video with the guy squatting and the bar bending in front of the green wall. That is Joes Sullivan, a world record holding powerlifter. From the bar bending he got a pretty nasty nerve injury and his bench dropped from close to 600lbs to around 300lbs. It was a few years ago and now close to where he was

Hey Dr I was in the army, I was a staff sergeant and many of my guys would lift like this and hurt themselves. We strongly promoted bodyweight workouts and cardio. Becuase being a soilder is about being athletic, not a gorilla. Also people blow out all kinds of stuff. The Army is terrible at promoting safe workouts. I learned from a good NCO and tried to emulate that - both my wife's parents are doctors so always got food advice from them aswell :)

I know somebody whose brother went to the gym early in the morning by himself, there was nobody in the weight room with him, and he did something like the guy in the second video did where he dropped the weight on his neck: except he unfortunately couldn't get it off and he died there.
