“My concern is the American security which is enhanced by a functioning NATO, which may or may not exist after four years of Donald Trump.”
Former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton is “worried” that Trump’s “isolationist” views on NATO and defence will cause both the US and Europe damage.

Boltons statement that he won’t vote for Biden makes no sense. If he really believes it is essential for national security to defeat Putin why won’t he vote for the candidate that is supporting Ukraine? I get that he doesn’t like his economic or boarder policies but there is a binary choice in November, it will either be a Democrat or Trump that wins & the only option for defeating Putin is the Democrat candidate.

As an Australian, it seems difficult to see what is going on behind the scenes with regard to Trump and Vance. I might be wrong but to me it looks a bit like Putin or someone in Russia is paying Trump to further their agenda regarding Ukraine. The reason I'm unsure what to believe is because no one has shown any proof. I wonder about the American (some of them) public and the fact that they seem to think Putin is a nice guy.

If the United States is pulled out of it, as trump hints that he will do, at least there is a chance that Europe will step up and still defend Ukraine. Putin has it a lot harder defending against the many countries of Europe than having the US as the mouthpiece of NATO with lesser support from most of Europe. In 2020, 9 countries were spending 2 percent of GDP on NATO defense, now it is 23 countries.

I find it hard to avoid the feeling that Europe is busy discussing (and acting on) how it can begin to distance itself from dependency on a USA that already has been getting an iffy record in recent years over not sticking with a policy for 'as long as it takes' and that now is looking like it has no interest in supporting the rule of international law and the rights of sovereign states. For myself, I am agape at the madness that seems to be engulfing the United States. How can this be happening. I am at a loss to explain it except to observe that a complete collapse in critical thinking ability (and not just in the US) is leading to a meltdown in sane behaviour.
@Mr.Monta77
@Mr.Monta77 Месяц назад
The same thing happened in Germany in the 1930s.
@kjm2199
@kjm2199 Месяц назад
As one of the biggest economies in the world, why has the EU allowed itself to be so dependent on the US for its security in the first place? I'm not American (Canadian), but I've always been puzzled as to why America pays so much to the defense of Europe while the Europeans seem to do little in their own defense.
@mikeonb4c
@mikeonb4c Месяц назад
@@kjm2199 I suppose one answer is to invite you to say why. But to start the ball rolling, perhaps its because Europe is not one country. Perhaps also, parts of it have been poorer than the US. Britain, for example, was all but bankrupted by WW2. The US offered lendlease but drove a hard bargain for it. Other countries had major rebuilding of their economies to undertake. Also, the US historically saw the threat posed by the USSR as a threat against its own interests. So there's that. Now it seems that Europe is acquiring a sense of unity over the need to defend democracy and the international rule of law. The US meanwhile seems to be splitting into (at least) two countries. It is at risk of acquiring a bad reputation for going into countries using two left feet before not staying 'as long as it takes' to fix the perceived wrongs that caused it to sail close to the wind on international law in the first place. Just my hurried thoughts but......I find it hard not to be impressed by the dignity of President Zelensky and the fight of the Ukrainians to save their country and to fight for the democracy I had thought all my life that we cherished. Just as a footnote, my uncle (deceased), cousins, and a brother are all naturalised Canadians. My dad trained in Canada before flying Lancs in WW2. Canada is probably my favourite country. I've found it interesting to listen to how they view the US. As one Canadian said to me: America views (the usefullness of) Canada to the north of it much as it views Mexico to the south. I found that a thought provoking observation.

As far as I remember, Trump has pointed out that NATO countries must spend more money on their defense and pay the minimum percentage of GDP they have committed to. I guess that's fair enough. 🤔

And if they don't, Russia can do what they want to them. Says Trump.

He’s right! If Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Estonia and Bulgaria can spend 2% of their GDP on Defence with MUCH smaller GDPs than most of the West then why can’t German, France, Norway and Spain do so? The US shouldn’t have to subsidise for countries that can easily afford 2% of GDP.

@@danmayberry1185the threat worked though! Everyone is spending now at least on paper 😂

the 2 % of GDP is just the entry membership payment, with inflation and a shrinking economy it will have to rise up to 4% plus, to have any real effect.

@@LordWalsallianEh pretty sure all those countries have hit the 2% mark in 2024 or even 2023/22.

Why shouldn't Biden be VP??? Put in a solid candidate + direct support and experience of Biden! The VP's job is not that tiring and he has energy for it. That would be great and all the positive things would be used.
