This is a great example of how the media has gotten out of hand. Although, I am sure that the police did "recommend" an assault in the second degree charge. However, there is no way that a competent prosecutor would do so. Second, reporter should have explained what is required for a person to be convicted of assault in the second degree. That would have shown the public how absurd the charge would be.

it's not wrong though. legally speaking, "assault" can be any form of unwanted contact. the second degree translates to "a crime of passion," done in "the heat of the moment." things in the first degree are planned and premeditated.

I think after one year on the Trump team, the whole concept of truth as something that's fixed is just lost on a person. A bit like if you spend a year in a foreign country speaking exclusively the local language, it takes conscious effort to speak English again.
