I watched a PhD engineer talking about his time working in development at a major EV manufacturer in the US a good while ago, and he was reflecting on his time in that sector some years before. He said as an engineer on the development team he repeatedly raised the point about the energy infrastructure not being ready to deal with the extra capacity requirements for EVs. He was on each occasion told to forget about it as it was not their problem, their problem was to design and sell cars, the hell with the problems for the national grids.

I was doorstepped a few years ago by my local MP who is totally sold on the green agenda and net zero. I explained to her that having 30 years experience in the power generation field I was aware that what she was proposing was not possible. Not only that but the UK would impoverish millions of people and ruin the economy while China and India would continue to build fossil fuelled power stations. The UK’s influence on CO2 levels is negligible in the great scheme of things. The same MP is a member of the SNP who have an embargo on nuclear energy in Scotland. Schriver’s piece was very interesting. I suspect that many Spectator subscribers would have predicted this. My own reason for such a prediction is I see the whole green project as being fuelled (sorry) by really being about a massive commercial game. As the Globalist movers and shakers who are behind the chosen response to climate change will be wringing their hands despairing about the uptick in fossil fuel usage they will be counting their new fortunes. Unsurprising at the same time economic conditions will become even harder for poor and working class folk. Some might say this is the strategy for the deployment of a new feudal society in the west.

I am struggling with Peter and Tim's view (particularly Tim's scriptural interpretation) that you cannot forgive until it us asked for by the perpetrator. The point of the Cross is that forgiveness was offered before we repented. Peter and Tim may have inadvertently left grace out of the equation.
On the discussion with Peter and Tim, the lack of forgiveness is directly linked to the rise of atheist and agnostic thinking. Many people now lack the virtue of humility to admit they've transgressed. Instead, in the absence of Christian formation, they expect others to apologise for them. This is something we need to acknowledge and I'm grateful to the Speccie for raising the issue. Genuine forgiveness is like peeling an onion because we often have to forgive someone else for the same offence again and again when it causes deep hurt. That's one of the reasons Jesus said we must forgive seventy-times seven. We definitely bring ourselves healing when we forgive those who have hurt or offended us. Tim needs to make an important distinction. Just because we forgive someone does not mean that we have to be best friends with them. At times, an apology isn't always possible on the part of others. This is because, even if they've caused great pain, it doesn't mean they realise they've caused it. In the worst cases, psychopaths repeatedly commit misdeeds because they don't see any wrong in it. Lacking forgiveness is like offering to carry someone else's luggage for the duration of your holidays. In other words, not worth it. Time flies. Those who've hurt us often forget all about it while we struggle to forgive them and move on with life.
You don’t need religion just a good upbringing and education. I think it’s less about religion and more about lack of self love due to broken families . If you are hard on yourself you are hard on others and are less likely to forgive.
Electric cars: Setting aside that they are extremely polluting both in creation and in end of life. Setting aside their mass with accompanying damage: To roads. Car parks. That the higher the mass, the more energy is required to move it, to stop it and it does more damage to what it hits. There is a clue in the name rare earth metals. There is not enough material to make a replacement car for everyone. To me it seems a happy coincidence that this will price poorer people out of car ownership. Lionel is imo making very pertinent points on supply of electricity for EVs and air pumps. It takes 10+ to 20 years to get a power station built and operating meanwhile the grid is trying to cope with excessive demand. The grid is not the power station. The transformers and cables will not be able to cope IF we just keep increasing demand. To lay an additional nation wide cable system and sub stations will take decades. Meanwhile many people will have intermittent electricity supply. ie their fridges and freezers will not work when we have regular power cuts.

It is the job of the State to maintain law & order, but it is NOT the job of the Justice Department. It is their job to dispense justice. The statue of Justitia depicted in most Courts features a blindfolded lady with scales in the left hand and a sword in the right. It is astonishing to me how few people, intelligent, left or right understand what any of these symbols actually stand for! Blindfold - Justice recognises the person of no-one - ALL are equally entitled to a fair trail irrespective of their eminence; Scales, to weigh the crime against the retribution; Sword, the use of force committed to the state to enforce the judgement. When one individual kills another, that life goes on one scale. What balances that life on the other scale? 14 years of the murderer's freedom? Forgiveness has NOTHING WHATEVER to do with the dispensation of justice. You miss the point on social media apologies. It is the "worst thing to do" because often the person apologising has done nothing wrong and is only apologising in a futile attempt to appease a bullying mob. Those they apologise to have no interest in accepting an apology so the whole exercise is pointless.

The emergence of God came after humanity, not the reverse. Morals were documented in various texts predating the compilation of religious scriptures like the Bible. Forgiveness is neither a moral justification or religious connotations. Forgiveness is a means of self-preservation.
Religion is not wanted largely by people, certainly comparable to the era PH mentions, so the 'new morality' that PH mentions will follow suit and the next mechanism, probably the environment or technology, it is all the same thing, a construct to overwhelme the majority by means undemocratic. The fundamental point is that people determine for themselves not some ever-changing rule-book that basically is advanced to maintain what otherwise would be altered, there are wonderful aspects to religion, but PH is correct, the country is currently about restrictions and morality and its all bullshit. I like Peters blazer and specifically his remarks on people ordinary being killed and the remark about influential literature and poetry from religion - as i say, many wonderful things, like food and friendship and architecture and thoughtful texts are from religious spheres, but the fundanental objection is that religion seeks to control large numbers of people, no different to the environment, technology etc and otherwise humanity would be arguably more satisfied generally. Also, it is remarkable how distinctive PH is to listen too, by comparison to virtually anyone else, he simply speaks from a very independently-minded-sovereign position - as a human being, versus all others who are just to my mind, not as accurate.

I am an atheist mainly because I just don’t think the existence of god is true. However as it has eroded I can see what utility it had, and why it was created by human beings. Although Peters late brother Christopher was unbelievable at highlighting the inaccuracies and malevolence of religion I do think he has been found to be incorrect on a main assumption he had. He seemed to assume that once we had emancipated ourselves from the authoritarian manacles of religion, what inevitably would flow would be rationality, compassion and enlightenment. That was clearly incorrect, the superstitions, intolerances and irrationalities of the progressive radicalism for example has shown that a lack of religion does not halt humans from these debased depths. The analogy i think of is that we thought in destroying religion we were destroying the voice of intolerance and superstition, instead all we did was stop that voice singing a certain song. The voice still remains it has just tweaked the melody and the lyrics.

Journalists see their names in print, or their faces online, almost every day, and this gives them (and their audience) an inflated sense of their authority and expertise. But journalists, by the very nature of their job, are, with very few exceptions, not actually experts in anything at all. The good ones have a very broad (and fairly shallow) knowledge of world affairs. None of them, in my experience, have deep knowledge in any matters relating to science, philosophy, theology, non-western cultures etc. etc. This video demonstrates the point rather nicely I thought.

Tesla and others are selling static battery-storage systems, and there's a host of startups working on other tech such as flywheels, sand (yes, really), and hot water. And of course there's always good old pumped hydro. 3. No, technology often doesn't advance in predictable ways (ask Nokia and Kodak) and we're at the start of the S curve for EVs. Battery tech is improving at breakneck speed, and the two safest cars in the world are both electric models. Other "green" tech is under development for heavy equipment, ships and so on (I'm looking forward to my first trip in a solar-powered electric airship). And we're going to need oil for the foreseeable to make all the everyday things that we take for granted - how are we going to replace plastics, otherwise? So it makes sense to stop using oil for things which can work using different tech. IMHO.

Lionel is on point about the stupidity of our "leadership". I remember Mar 2020, when the lunacy of lockdown was starting, and the costs of it were being banded around. I at the time said, a far better use of the 500 billion estimated for the UK lockdowns, would be to use it to massively scale up UK Nuclear, and the national grid. If done right we could've used it as a massive national training scheme to get UK citizens expertise in construction and commissioning of plants like Hinkley, which is touted to cost about 30 billion - so we could have 10 more of them with surplus funds to go to national grid upscale improvements. Give people this training with the caveat that they can only go off and setup private enterprises using these skills based in the UK for tax purposes, and you would have guaranteed the UK a major sector of high skill, high wages for decades if not centuries to come. Instead what do we have to show for that utter waste of public money? Record national debt, high inflation, a generation of children utterly failed, far higher levels of suicide in the young, increased depression, increased poverty, and less trust in the scientific and medical communities.... and of course, no solution to the green energy issue, or increased national grid capacity..... what a complete bunch of tossers we have in positions of power, for a memeber of the general public to be able to see this opportunity, while none of them even put something like this forward as an alternative, shows how utterly incompetent they all are.

That was a great idea. It’s something that we still need to do: we still need much more nuclear capacity. If you are like me, you will probably remember the way that Sweden was castigated for taking a different approach, namely: no lockdowns, but trusting their citizens to keep social distancing and to take sensible measures. The left wing msm in particular was heavily critical of the Swedish approach. I wasn’t in Sweden at the time, but from news reports it appears that they saved themselves from the mass hysteria that gripped this country.
@@28pbtkh23 Yeah, i saw a fair bit of info about that at the time, including some rather good interviews Freddie Sayers did on the Unherd channel on RU-vid. I would've gone even further though. The data available from the start (from the NHS) showed there was almost no risk to people under 60 that were otherwise healthy, and zero problem for children. That being the case all they needed to do was identify clearly at risk groups, and give them the support required, and tell everyone else to carry on regardless. It would've been over in less than 12 months if they had done that. Plus no increase harms to kids, many businesses would've been saved, inflation would not have rocketed. And of course if they'd gone with ploughing 500 billiion into the Nuclear idea, then the UK population would have benefited to an extraordinary level for decades to come. Hell they could've made the electricity supply free at point of use with that amount of money if they'd played the game well with how to handle it. Just imagine the inward investment in UK Plc with free energy for business that would also be zero carbon.... Doing what they did was short-sighted beyond belief.
Lionel Shriver is right about some things. The lack of electrical infrastructure in the pipeline is moronic. But she spoils it by going completely off the rails later on. She thinks it's comical if gas powered electricity is used to get people off burning fossil fuels in their cars and boilers. It's not that simple: heat pumps are so efficient that you can heat a home with less gas by burning it at a distant power station than you can by burning gas in that home. It's surprising, but it's already true with current technology. You can then, at least in principle, sequester the resulting CO2. Internal combustion engine cars are so inefficient that they require a lot more fossil fuel than EV ones powered by gas generated electricity. Complain about the cost if you like, but don't laugh at the idea as irrational. She's also wrong that we should wait until we have fully developed technology before undertaking anything new. With that outlook, nothing new would ever happen. Battery technology is advancing incredibly fast and it's obvious that it will continue to do so because the market for it is so huge. If there's a shortage of some element used in battery manufacture, be sure that technology or further mineral prospecting, will find a way round it.

Our morals and ethics are not permanent, but are instead the result of Christian civilisation, which is now in steep decline. According to Tom Holland, Ancient Rome was utterly ruthless. Women in poverty were deprived of their children. Those indebt were deprived of their belongings. The sick were forced to live under ground and apart from the more fortunate. Crucifixion represented to cruellest form of torture and death known to the Romans. Since then, Holland argues, Christianity became basis of Western values. So much so that we are now secular fish swimming in a Christian pool. The compassion and mercy that we show towards others is integrally Christian. By association, so is forgiveness.
If Western Civilisation is to survive, it is time to get real on below replacement rates of births. Encouragements don't work so it is time for penalties for not doing your civic duty. Importing vast numbers of people to replace the children we didn't have is immoral. Women over 30 without a child should have an extra penny on income tax. This should increase by a penny year on year. Women over 35 without 2 children should have that increased to 2p a year. I know that today that sounds outrageous. The death of our nation due to the selfishness of people who enjoy dual income no kids is more outrageous. Of course this would require some nuance, women who can not have children ect.

The article with Lionel. Hey want us to pay for electricity which has to be made we as gas etc once retrieved from the earth and processed only brings in one set of profits. Electricity manufacturing gives profit to the companies that provide the fuel for the power stations and all other related entities then they get the profit from selling electricity. Plus unless you’ve huge batteries (that again a source of profit) you have to continually buy the electricity. It is all a huge capitalist con. I have no problem with making a profit. I have huge issue with being continually lied to.
In extenuation, the piece about electrical power requirements in the US - and the utter stupidity of those politicians pushing zero carbon usage - is a breath of fresh air. When everyone listens to their engineers and accepts that this blind push toward Utopian electrification is impossible to achieve, we can all begin making progress toward a practical and gradual increase in electrical power production - without vastly increasing ecological destruction in the process…
