Why not? --- when that's exactly the way one of the two elder men vying to be the next President of the United States of America & essentially the leader of the free world acts. I think this broad, sad "social experience" we're all witnessing in the US and as outside observers are too, will offer a lot of better understanding to folks in years & decades ahead who professionally study this stuff (sociologists; historians; public policy makers), as to what makes these folks' mindsets "tick"....against what we can fairly argue are basic commonsense reasons to the contrary, in so many areas like those examples you gave, even while allowing plenty of room for legitimate policy disagreements on so many other aspects.
