IMO, I think Mr. Tacopina still wants to practice law AFTER this case thus concerned about the aftermath of the likely losing case. After losing, he would have lost future potential clients and likely be blacklisted (unofficially) and grouped with the crazy MAGA lawyers. Since he was paid $1.7 million in 2023 (as per the NY Times) and received significant publicity through this case even though he did not see it to completion, Mr. Tacopina came out a winner with this strategic exit. 🤝

I think Tacopina fully expects to be attacked by Trump. I also think the main purpose of doing this interview, especially with Rev Sharpton, is to try and proactively rehabilitate his reputation and image a little bit. If he's done so, and I liked the honesty and professionalism he showed here, the attacks won't matter much.

@rdubitsk What did we learn thanks to this interview, though? OP was talking about not letting Tacopina off the hook with the questions asked. What did we learn? In a case where the interviewee is going to be tight-lipped and tells you so, you need to find ways to pry lips loose. That didn't happen here, IMO because Tacopina was so frequently put on the defensive and reminded of Rev. Sharpton's distaste for the decision to represent Trump.

I met Joe Tacopina 20 years ago when I was a freshman in college working through a temp agency during my holiday breaks. He is genuinely a really kind individual. People don’t always treat their temps well, but he was extraordinarily patient and a pleasure to work with. I pray for his continued success.

I have a feeling he didn’t want his name mixed up with Alina Habba and wouldn’t go to the lengths she would to bend the truth or flat out lie. But being Trump it could be a multitude of things. I appreciate this interview so much. I have a lot of respect for Joe doing the interview, saying what he felt he could, but also not sensationalizing it. One interview, says what he wanted to and answered some questions, and now is done. I’m no fan of Trump by any means, but appreciate a lawyer who does his job and also knows when he has had his limit with a client and walks away.

More than one attorney who has quit has stated this. They have made it clear that it is to the point that they are unable to mount an adequate defense for their client due to his lack of co- operation. "There are many things I can't discuss" AKA: I was asked to do something so illegal that it wasn't just going to cost my reputation, my bar license, my career but also my freedom, because that man is going down and he is going to take anyone with him that is stupid enough to go along with him. I've seen a few things elsewhere where other professional lawyers have stated that Tacopina was going on TV and saying some pretty outlandish stuff while he was a lawyer for Trump, but apart from that he is a competent legal professional. So that suggests Trump was asking/telling him to do something that Tacopina knew would land him in deep trouble if he did it and was found out. Or, someone close to him took him aside and explained to him that he was on the verge of destroying his career and reputation. And there would be no coming back once it was done. That would be my read on the situation.

This is a very humble Tacopina compared to before. Something must have happened behind the scenes for him to decide to follow his ‘moral compass’. Great interview. I cannot stand Trump, nor do I care for Joe T.'s (IMO) very aggressive courtroom demeanor. But I am impressed with Joe T. bc (1) he agreed to be interviewed only by his former colleague, because of their long-time friendship and mutual respect for each other, (2) I was previously unaware of his extensive work history in civil rights, and that ratchets up my respect for him, and (3) his ethical stance on keeping his attorney-client matters (including his personal opinions of Trump) confidential. I'm happy to be pleasantly surprised by him, thanks to this interview. That being said, I hope Trump gets jail time.
