Well, she's right about this: tariffs are bad. The free market works. Government intervention in the economy does not work, even if it's done by Republicans and dressed up as "nationalism".
Stop thinking like checkers. Think like chess. The flooding of money wasn't desired by anyone, but they had to as dominos prior were falling which forced this hand. Mass inflation wasn't only caused by flooding money, but it started prior. Covid shut down supply chains, so it became more expensive to get things, thus prices increased. Because people were not working or industries were shut down, we would have had a lot of things break in the system. It's easy now to say we just shouldn't have shut down so much and for so long, but that's hindsight. The unnecessary war in Ukraine also forced gas prices up. When gas prices go up, product prices go up.
Smorris: People were told over a year ago that they were needed to climb their career ladders, that the jobs going unstaffed tended to be middle echelon and upper echelon requiring experience, skills, and credentials. Financial analysts reported that too few of such people were seeking advancement. Thus, top ranks were being thinned out by retirees for whom there were no adequate replacements applying. The USA economy NEEDS middle and upper echelon staff to be assertive enough to apply for better paying jobs. 52,000,000 born in USA are 18 to 30, and entry level for them is glutted because those older than them are not bothering to attempt to advance in job tasks, prestige, title, and pay. Financial analysts also told people last summer that conditions were ideal for those who want to change fields. Far too many who are middle aged now are unaware that they are supposed to contact their former community college, State college, and/or State university because alum now tend to have LIFETIME access to the Student Placement Office -- either free or on the same terms as enrolled enrolled students. One reason mid-level staff are not advancing is they don't know how to seek employment except in newspapers, on the public internet, or word of mouth. It is easier to scapegoat the economy instead of seeking advancement in one's career and better pay to keep up with inflation. Has nobody informed you about adulting rather than complaining despite not doing what is required to keep up?

The pandemic outcome has caused this economic turmoil. It's a miracle we're doing as well as we are. Trump still doesn't understand that we pay the excess cost of tarriffs. Every day he makes having gone to Wharton a joke. 😮
So you think tarrifs are going to make it cheaper? Companies aren't compromising their margins so the cost of tarrifs goes directly to the consumer. It would make goods even more unaffordable.

@@BlackCrowVr Tarriffs are what increase your prices on daily goods. It cheaper to make things overseas. If you raise prices with tarrifs the companies will just pass the prices onto the consumer. Even if made in America the prices would go up substantially. Most people don't like how prices are already high so it's hard to support tariffs or making good in America that would further dramatically increase prices.
Janet Yellen has been a BIG problem for US for many many years now. The economy has only gotten worse and worse under her as Secretary of Treasury and even when she was the Chair of the Federal Reserve going back to 2014.

If you can sit here and listen to anyone say we are better off than we were, poorly reading a teleprompter, while being part of the biggest propaganda machine ever assembled in history, not to mention an awful financial policy architect, and not be bothered by it, well then it’s safe to say you are worried about getting a stain out on the carpet while you’re house is on fire. Maybe you wouldn’t call the fireMEN to put it out because they aren’t woke enough or DEI compliant to save your life & assets. I couldn’t agree more with the original comment, listening to Janet here, Kamala, or Biden for that matter is absolutely terrifying, devoid of reality, and mind numbing. False. It's called price gouging. The pandemic was handled extremely poorly. The prices went up due to supply chain problems during COVID and then others piled on by raising their prices. Post pandemic, the prices never came down. That happens, bc prices ratchet up and rarely go down; exceptions include oil and gas, certain types of seafood, etc. Instead of blaming the Biden Harris Admin, you all need to do some googling and read up on price gouging. That's one of the many points that VP Harris made in her speech. You all need to understand that events, actions and inaction have lasting and often delayed effects: Pandemic supply chain problems in 2020 and early '21 will have inflationary effects in later '21 and beyond. It's common sense. You have to think outside of the box and avoid the "name and blame" mentality.
Bufdha: Mid-career people not seeking job advancement is holding the entire economy back. Entry level has been glutted for many years. Upper ranks are hollowing out from retirements. Middle ranks think they are still in grade school waiting for automatic promotions rather that learning how to do professional job searches. Do many don't even know what a Student Services Placement Office is and how that fits into their career development. LOTS of workers in their 30s through 50s need to grow uom
Wake up, Janet! Life is already unaffordable for Americans, especially seniors on fixed incomes, thanks in large part to your failure to address and fix the COLA adjustment index under social security, which currently does not include adjustment for inflation for food and gas! Thank you and Jerome Powell, for letting us starve and freeze at the same time. 🥶
Wouldn’t you expect that Republicans in Congress would do something about high price ? All they’ve done is obstruction ? Tell me what you think the President can do?
@Jilla0559 increasing energy production and removing the moratorium on LNG exports would go a long way. Biden could do all that with the stroke of a pen. Doing so would even end the two wars Biden has gotten us into.
Makes me sick! My retired neighbor is on SS. Our psychotic corporate complex just raised our rent YET AGAIN, and now she has to put her groceries on her credit card. This is horrific. These leaches need salt!!!!!
I don't know where she's getting her stats from wages have certainly not gone up for the average Joe including my husbands job as of last year when he retired. Grocery prices are crazy high and not going down also gasoline prices are high.. I’m sorry but I don’t believe that, name one American business that will be willing to cut their profit margins due to tariffs. Everyone here in America wants to make a profit that’s why we outsource a lot of materials and goods from other countries, so then the stuff we live on and use for everyday life can be affordable.

Love Janet Yellen! I've followed her work for years and everything she says and did while head of the Federal Reserve has made America the largest fast driving economic driver of the world now compared to the entire rest of the world. Bravo!
I'll condense it. She's telling us our economic status is BOOMING! Jobs are up, money is up, everybody is doing perfectly great 👌 America is just thriiiiiving.
Then she proceeds to slap tariffs on Chinese EVs because the U.S. doesn't want to be "flooded with cheap goods". I'd understand this if at the same time we hadn't had many decades of cheap foreign labor undercutting our workers...

Is it a financial institution? Are we stealing from shareholders? B) Who do think you are seizing assets that don't belong to you, lending them and then obligating another country to pay everything back? And who exactly are they paying it back to?! -------------------- I don't care how you spin it, this is criminal.
A tariff is on IMPORTED goods. It is collected when the goods enter the country. We already have some tariffs on both imported and exported goods. Before the war in 1861 this nation was completely supported by tariffs on imported goods. What will happen is the people INSIDE the USA will start making some of those goods here which will give more opportunity for employment. WHY? Because we can make those goods for less money than importing the goods from other countries. SO tariffs will NOT make life more "unaffordable" for us citizens and residents. The Federal Government spending substantially more than they collect in taxes is what is making financial life more and more difficult here inside this country. THIS is the only cause of inflation.
Sinclair New that controls ABC pushed this Reporter to ask Yellan a Question and then not wait for a question Why is it that the Food and rental has skyrocket prices and we don’t blame the industries ? Trump’s Tariffs from 2017 are the reason that products are so high now ! We don’t need more Tarriffs
If we don't need more tariffs why did the Biden administration just leave tarrifs on China? As for blaming the industries it's not their fault that the price of diesel has still not come down. They've already investigated and had a hearing. They couldn't name a single company that was supposedly prove gouging.
Life is already unaffordable right now. Everything costs more now. Every year prices go up and up. Wages haven't gone up with the high inflation. For instance, one pack of butter. with 4 sticks in the pack, is like 10 dollars at the store! This is absurd! Simple examples like this, show how bad it is. Result is, people buy less 10 dollar butter and so on. I could go on and on. Problem is rich people dont care about inflation and they wont do anything to fix it either.

not price gouging. its companies trying to keep up with rampant inflation because the biden admin injected trillions of worthless dollars into the economy to fund BS. thats also why you see wages rising but obviously thats doing nothing to help workers since the price of logistics, goods, services etc are all skyrocketing

The inflation rate has been moving back and forth between 3.2% and 3.4% in recent times. Neither the Treasury nor the average person considers 3.2%, 3.3%, or 3.4% as _"rising very slow, close to the normal rate."_ It is why Jerome and Co. have not reduced the interest rates.
