Either his spit valve is really full or his lips just gave up on him. Either way it’s not really his fault. The fact that he just stayed calm about it is amazing! Bravery right there
@@danyy8000 yes that is true. But there are contributors. Like he either didn’t have a good warm up before hand and his chops aren’t ready to do the higher octaves, or maybe they were over worked by over practicing before hand. Nervousness is also something to consider too. People who are anxious while playing are much more prone to more mistakes. And the spit valve can also have too much spit in it sometimes causing a crackling noise. Those things could’ve contributed to his solo fail. But either way, he still tried and put in effort and at the end of the day it is a solo. It’s scary! Especially for beginners. And he gave it his all. I’m still proud of the guy for just getting himself out there. And even with the mistakes he still kept playing instead of just stopping. Which playing through mistakes is very hard to do. So hats off to him!
@@asher1013 yeah, spit valves are my biggest fear for an upcoming solo of mine. They get full after playing the song 2-3 times, so it's not a logical fear, but sometimes I forget to empty them. Also, centaurus is a lip killer, I swear on it.
@@ithangaming789 it’s called an embouchure. It seems like offering analysis to an instrument you know nothing about. Obviously he biffed it, but you’re the last person that should be diagnosing what went wrong on this grainy video
Plot Twist: He is the son of the principal and the music teacher's job was threatened if he didn't let him play a solo at the show. True stories... I was there. 🤣😁😏
He wasn't that bad. As a trumpet player I can understand the feeling that he had of having lips that were knackered because after a while your lips make it harder for you to play high notes
Yes! People in the comments who have never played a brass instrument or any instrument shouldn’t have a room to talk about “hOw BaD oF a FaiL tHiS wAs.” Or “oH tHeY dId TeRrIbLy, ThEy SuCk.” they have no clue how hard it is to play an instrument let alone having the guts to even do a solo!
Man why does the title have to say "Epic Fail", this poor dude was probably just super nervous and had a bad day, it happens to everyone at some point.
Just as my jazz band conductor says "It doesn't matter if you play the wrong notes, just as long as you play on the beat" Because you can have new notes and learn them in a day but the beat will always be the same
When it comes to improvisation, I've always been taught that "There are no such things as wrong notes. There are only incorrect resolutions." If you happen to play a note that isn't on right the scale or key, the next note is what decides if it's good or bad in most cases. If the next note you play is on the correct scale and key, it's a proper resolution and the uneasiness of the accidental is resolved by the following note. If you follow it with more accidentals, then you're just playing out of key.
Five years ago, I had to play the second movement from Haydn at a performance. Nothing nervewrecking, just kind people in the audience. Yet I failed because I was so nervous that I couldn't play a note. I quitted trumpetplaying after this. Sold all my beloved trumpets exept one. This summer, however, I re-started trumpetplaying. Joined a local orchestra and I'm relearning how to play. I've got huge respect for my brother trumpetter in this video and hope he did not do what I did.
Yeah people don't realize how big a deal this could be to him, he could have been practicing for hours, or not at all, either way he was probably embarrassed, and the laughing and posting the recording really don't help. Literally why are people laughing it's disrespectful af, especially in music, you respect people that go up and play solos at all.
People keep saying that maybe he is a begginer. No band teacher with a brain would give a begginer a solo. On second hand don't bash the guy for messing up he could've been over playing practicing his solo all day then his lips gave in in the end. When someone messes up how wbout we encourage them to do better instead of talking about how much better we are then them.
EVEN if it was a beginner band they would have to try out. and if there is nobody good / willing to play solo then ANY band teacher with a brain would make it a soli unless the soloist practiced it out or something really soon
It was probably because the actual soloist couldn't make it to the concert, and so he had to do it. He was bad at it because he hadn't played it in rehearsals.
as someone who covered for a gig cuz my buddy couldn't make it on the fly, kid definitely needs some work on a LOT of things, but honestly I've been there, it happens. He needs to take some pressure off his face and stop pushing it on the horn, tilt it up a bit more, and work on his tone.
He was unlucky... Maybe his lips failed at that moment... If it wasn't a solo, nobody would mess with him. He is a complete artist just for the fact he is trying.
Mr. Batman yes, that's true. One time I've played a solo (clarinet) and I failed 2 notes... It was embarassing, but that made me study more, so I don't fail. Maybe now, he doesn't fail anymore!
I just got this exact solo in a community band. I was just reminded of this video and it brought me back to the times where I completely whiffed a solo. Nothing bad in concerts, but they were still great teaching moments. This poor guy probably wore himself out playing this instrument and couldn’t hold a note, which doesn’t mean he’s a bad player.
I don't think puffing your cheeks alters your ability to play higher notes. I think it's all about your embouchure and how comfortable your lips are to the point where you can play the exact note right away. There are some slight disadvantages to puffing your cheeks like possibly not having enough breathe. I personally blow longer when I don't puff my cheeks but if you know how to circular breathe it shouldn't be a problem. It all depends on how comfortable you are when you blow through your instrument and if you can play notes perfectly it shouldn't be a problem.
Nah, the notes are not that high. He just don't have a the range to play it. Granted we don't know how long he was playing before hand. I have been playing for 2-3 hours in marching band when I first started then had to do a half time show and not have chops left. I learned to hold back on blowing out until after the show.
In 6th grade, I failed a very intense solo and I was so disappointed in myself that I barely recovered until 8th grade. This person did great. My fail was a great learning experience though!
This isn’t that bad. When I had my first solo in an ensemble I was pretty spooked and played an played something random because I couldn’t play the solo
We had one of these happen at my middle school. Ironically, it was the eighth grade band that had the failure, and they were probably the best of the three grades at our school. The kid stood up to play his solo, took a deep breath, and absolutely bombed it.
I don't hear whats the big deal. Maybe he got nervous. Its only high school for goodness sake. If he was playing for the president then maybe I would hold him up to a higher standard but the band sounded alright. As for the girls giggling thats normal. If you have ever been in band then you know all sorts of stuff goes on that the audience never find out about. People hit wrong notes. Drummers drop stuff. People fart during solos and on and on.
Holy shit, I did the same thing in my first bass solo in jazz band... And my second, with a minor flop on my third. I've been in your shoes countless times and I'm still in middle school man! Keep it up, and keep practicing!!
I know that trumpet player his name is steve and I was I the LMS high school where he was in and I saw him always crying but it turns out that his girlfriend left him in 2016.
At least he is playing learning an instrument. Better than some who wont be able to play any at all. Give him a good teacher some dedicated practice and one day he'd probably be telling another trumpet student of this day (and they wont believe it!) Keep practicing... it gets better with time and effort.
@EternalOwn Dizzy didn't actually puff his cheeks. They herniated from the muscles underneath. Inside his mouth the muscles were firm as if not puffing.
