In 1970 they added a prop rod to hold the trunk up. I’m fortunate that my 69 trunk stays up without support. I have the rear spoiler but it is aftermarket and may be lighter. For the stock trunk, you need the piece of cardboard that fits in the driver side trunk drop off. I don’t know why they didn’t do it on the passenger side… perhaps because the spare tire would go on that side. I have never like the stock trunk on these. The aftermarket ones available are not much better. Mustangs to Fear has a nice custom trunk but they only make for 65-68 mustangs. I got tired of waiting for them to make one for 69 so I made my own. I ran 1/2” plywood across the floor. Then bought a loose piece of carpet from ACC to match the carpet in the passenger compartment. Lastly I added an LED light strip like how you mentioned. The stock wiring harness has a plug as the original had an option for a trunk light. I just plugged it into that. I added a manual switch rather than an automatic switch.

Hey Matt, thanks for adding all this info. I'm going to pin this comment because it is filled with good information. I did buy the trunk rod for 70 to install into the car but I haven't installed it yet. Just hasn't been a priority because I really don't ever use the trunk. I don't even carry a spare because I am not traveling that far, and if I really need it, Hagerty has some sort of tow deal. Do you know if they make the cardboard piece as a reproduction for the driver side trunk drop off? Is this what you are talking about? NPD P/N: Item # 011229-1 That's a good idea to make your own in the rear. It'll be much safer to carry stuff in the trunk AND it will look a ton better.

As far as I know the filler board is driver side only. The stock trunk mat extends over the filler board on the driver side. But the mat is cut short on the passenger side so I don’t think the passenger side ever had it. The NPD part number is correct. It matches the factory board but both are flimsy. They make the trunk look better but I wouldn’t put anything that weighed more than a pound on it.

I had no idea they made a rod to hold the trunk open. I just thought the spring had sprung. I may try to find a hood prop rod from the bone yard and make my own. 👍 thanks for the video.

Thank you for watching and commenting! Good luck on your hunt for the part! They also sell reproduction ones if that’s your thing.

Nice work my dude! I need to do a trunk mat for my car, and I really like that lower mat you put down over the gas tank. Where did you get that part?

Hey Andy Thanks! I got it from NPD. They had a good selection of mats for the trunk depending on what you want.
