The irony in all of this is that a lot of people in the comments are misunderstanding the hero. The whole point is that she's trying her best to do good and going about it all wrong. This song is one of the only stories that describes "morally gray" and actually blurs the line between right and wrong and everyone is wasting their time picking sides.

I like to think of the "Villain" and "Hero" as equally hurt The "Villain" needs support and has been through some shit and the villain thinks the hero is ignoring leaving them feeling betrayed from never getting the support they need The Hero has been distracted by trying to help everyone and their mental health is slowly deteriorating from only helping never receiving and doesn't want to believe its their fault

Precisely! I think due to their past experiences, the villain was turned into a selfish person, because after you are hurt a lot, all you care about is not being hurt again. But it's clear that the hero is having a tough time as well. I believe that they were once in a frienship/relationship were both truly trusted one another. Around the past-self villain, the hero got the opportunity to care about themselves as well, and they didn't feel that they had to always prove themselves to the villain, that's why they say, "What about us?" But after failing to save their only friend, it's clear that they are blaming themselves for it. I also like to think that the reason why the villain was hurt was indirectly due to the hero. For example, they were used as a hostage, bait, or sacrifice since the villains knew they were the hero's friend. And when forced to choose between saving the world or saving their only friend (as well as the only person who saw them, as, well, a person). But they chose to save the people, perhaps because that's what they felt their sole purpose of existing was. But they didn't give up on trying to save the villain, instead of how they could have if they _truly_ didn't care for them. It would make sense, then, why the villain blames the hero so much, and why the hero _slightly_ selfishly says, "What about us?" (What about our happy memories? Trust?) Both of them gave each other strength, health, and therapy, so when they were separated, naturally, they became weak without one another. Well, that's it for my rambling

I feel like one reason people are being more sympathetic towards the “villain” here is because that they are labeled “villain”. Heroes are expected to be the moral high ground, people who cannot do wrong. Villains don’t have those moral standards to reach. Because of these labels, you stop looking at them as people and just go by your own expectations. i know that i’m looking too into this but hey this is a theme in bnha and i just wanted to ramble about it

A hero actually saying sorry. Man that hit hard. And the fact that it’s like they used to be friends but the villain seemingly got bored of never being good enough for the hero, who they dearly love inside. Honestly, I feel like a lot of comments are black and white about the hero or villain being the one to blame. In my opinion, I think that you can’t blame either of them fully. The hero messed up but they’re human (I’m assuming). They are destined to make mistakes. The villain just seemed to give up on themselves from some past experience that they just accepted being the “villain”. In summary, both of them can take some of the blame in my opinion. Edit: After listening to the song again, it seems like the hero’s trying to repair the relationship between them and the villain while the villain just wants the pain and grief they feel to stop. All in all, this song is really amazing yet gut wrenching.

Both are broken people who chose two different paths. The hero sounds manipulative but that's just how sad people view helping sometimes, the hero has to deal with the guilt everytime. The villain is way too far down it's path that it can't see much good anymore because of their unfortunate/traumatizing past clogging their whole senses, portraying that innocent people are just as bad as the people who scarred the villain.

I like that idea so here a story about it. The Hero was originally a hero that got broken down so bad after years of the public treating them as something to walk over. A accident happened that finally took it to far. When the Villain ask what are you doing dear aren't you tired, it's trying to find why the Hero is alone. Hero: what are you doing here I don't think that you are invited: as the Hero never told the Villain to come with as it wants to be alone. Hero: here you go again with pretending that you love me even though right underneath the surface you think that you are above me: the Hero feels as the Villain is trying to manipulate itself by acting as a friend. Villain: dig deep into the past I've never been one to do half faster, if I'm here to save you I be here forever. Just take my hand I be you're knight in shining armor: trying to help the Hero into thinking it's a friend that save it from what happening. Hero: you think your a hero? And they tell you you are so stoic and handsome and that you came so far: as the villain is someone who is recovering for something. Villain: you think your a villain but I know that you not. Under all that angst and anger is a beating human heart: the Hero was the one to save the Villain for drowning in what happened. Hero: Is a dying broken heart: the hero had given so much and nothing ever got return where It needed itself, no help was ever given till now so much has happen to the Hero it's giving up on itself. Hero: hey what about the lonely little girl?: a sibling or a great friend maybe the hero itself. Villain: I'm sorry: never released that the hero was in so much pain cuz of this. Hero: what about the monsters who prevailed?: this could mean the hero has nightmares or keep seeing things related to the accident though it happened so long ago. Villain: I'm sorry: the Villain had no clue about the monsters it gave the hero. Hero: you never came to save my world: the hero got so much to do and if not the public has issues even though the hero is a human over time the hero overwork to the point of death there was no one to help either as the hero got more and more stressed the hero start to lose hope in itself. Hero: what about me: the hero is overworked, injured, tired and hungry as it had no time to take care of itself the public were blind to the dying hero as there were other thing. To much has happen as the hero lost more faith in themselves and the public. Villain: what about us: the Villain trying to help the hero out of the pit it's in, the same way the hero did with the Villain. Villain: I recognize that your upset I know the did you wrong: Villain see that the hero is tired of the world and knows what the public did was wrong. Hero: oh you know nothing about me: has trouble believing the Villain as no one ever saw what happened. Villain: Trust me please believe me this won't stop the pain you long: the Villain knows this will only get worse over time. Villain: we don't need to end like this: Villain doesn't want the hero to be alone with no one to help. Hero: here comes the hero complex: is tired of people tell it be fine. Villain: look me in my eyes: trying to have the Hero see a different side. Hero: I know I'm a Villain but you're the one who lies: think the Villain is trying to cover everything up, and is unable to feel like it's doing good for anyone. Villain: you call yourself a villain but we know it's only a disguise: the hero is so far down it can't see anything but the bad it's done Hero: so you're back at it again twisting and manipulating everything word I say: the hero words get twisted so often that it think the Villain trying to. Villain: come on you know that not true. I'm trying to help you let me help you: the hero keeps refusing the help of the Villain as it has trouble seeing it does want to help and not control the hero. Hero: you are not my hero you don't know how it felt what else would you do with the cards that I've been dealt: the hero doesn't know what to do with it all any more. Villain: you are not the Villain you once held my hand: try to tell the hero it's not it fault. Hero: stand up get out some times things don't go as planned: has already given up on itself.

I love that just the lyrics don't paint the "hero" as perfect and actually tries to apologie to the "villain". Usually in media (specifically old Disney movies) they paint the hero as a perfect kindhearted individual with no flaws and the villains (as fun as Maleficent and others are) as completely evil with no backstory on why they became this way. Thankfully current media is changing this problem, including Disney (for example Raya and Namari from Raya and the last dragon). I've always been nervous about writing my characters cause i fear I'll make the heroes too perfect or the villains too evil, but when i look at shows like Avatar, which was able to flesh out both sides, i feel better, the same with this beautiful song. Showing that neither are perfect and the struggles they go through

Having pure evil villains isn’t a writing issue - having too many sympathetic puppy dog villains/making everything morally gray makes its own issues; there are some people in this world that suck just because they can and like making other’s lives Hell whilst they reap reward after reward. Making every villain sympathetic just makes it seem that no matter what someone else does wrong, that if they “change” or “get better” it suddenly undoes all the damage they gleefully did. That isn’t how it works at all.

It's so sad that we have a hero here, doing their best to help the villain, no matter what. Yet the villain simply doesn't want to get saved, because they are judged by society, and they can never return to what was before. They blame the hero, but know that they are wrong too. The blur between these lines is so beautiful.

It's interesting to see how the villain is completely self absorbed through out the whole song, only worried about themselves and how they felt, even ignoring the hero's desperate apologies and tormenting them with past failures and guilt compared to the hero's selfless attitude and constant attempts to remind the villain of happier times and avoid any fight or worse loosing them forever only to completely fail as the villain must have already slipped away long ago...

I agree with you, I don't believe that those kind of heros should be the standard, in my heart, true heros are as understanding, respectful and empathetic as they can possibly be, they try their very best to save EVERYONE within reach, be it physically, mentally or spiritually, even though they're struggling themselves, because being a true hero requires self-sacrifice, and they do it for the sake of helping people, things like fame, glory, status would be merely a "bonus".

The problem with Villains though is that they're quite self absorbed. They don't get saved and they go off and get pissy. Because of THEIR experiences they decide to ruin others' lives. @@Gloom_Lore I think there are two sides of the same coin. Everyone is selfish to an extent and we often see selflessness as a 100% completely positive thing. But sometimes, life isn’t that black and white and what seems like help to one person can seem like a evil act to another. Heroes that want to save everyone, despite some people being murderers, liars, cheaters, etc are boring and could be considered evil since they are actively making the world worse. Damn, this really hits hard There is no clear who is right or who is wrong in this. And that's always the thing about conflict It's not always ones bad ones good. Many times both sides have points and views that will clash. Their own experiences and understanding. I don't think Hero was trying to be manipulative but it can come out that way. Especially when trying to say it's an us thing instead of focusing on just one or the other. Though when hurt and still trying to save others it can be difficult to do it right Villain has valid feelings but is too broken to see anything but the negative. Cannot trust the other or see any truly good intentions that may be there. Two broken people clashing with their different mindsets.
@mariaclaragoncalvesduarte2945

I felt bad for both of them, because in my point of view the "hero" had to make a difficult decision and was wrong, accidentally hurting the "villain" who was already feeling very bad, inferior to a lot of people and suffering (maybe in silence) , doing this as a trigger for a mental breakdown, at the same time the "hero" was also hurt and didn't know what to do, so she was just trying her best so that no one got hurt like the two of them. So both the "hero" and the "villain" are two innocent girls (or whatever gender you prefer) who really need a hug and help, but the "hero" doesn't want to addmitt that she (the "hero") needs help and the "villain" does not feel that her own trauma is a justification for crying. it's hella sad

I love how when the villain accuses the hero of not being enough, not having saved everyone, the hero apologizes and actually believes that it's their fault that some people couldn't be saved Then the villain says "what about me?" And the hero says "what about us?" That scene alone reveals a lot about the characters, since the hero is in a mindset that everyone has to be helped and saved when the villain is honestly just there for themselves That scene is sooo 😩🤌
@jordanoh659
@jordanoh659 3 года назад
I see that scene differently the hero doesn't realise that right now this is about the villain not about everybody. The hero being a hero wants everyone to be helped, understood, an happy. While the villain feels misunderstood because it's never only about them.
@danicook9767

I feel as though the hero doesn't understand. When the line "What about me?" Comes. I feel as though the villain is implying that there was a time they could've been saved. If someone was there to help. But there wasn't. And when the hero says. "What about us?" It shows the hero doesn't understand that maybe, for once, its about one person in particular that needs help instead of just everyone. And that its always going to have the hero, even when it doesn't involve them.
@aperson2697
@aperson2697 3 года назад
It's a tricky part for the hero too since heroes are put in this insanely high expectation that they have to help everyone, pay attention to only one person for a moment and another person somewhere must've been crying about where the hero is to save them. Which is probably why they are conditioned to always think about everyone at once. It sounds so tiring to be a hero, everyone of course wants someone to help only them for a moment but what about others who also demands the same? What about the innocent people the villain tormented? Wouldn't that be also unfair to them? It would just be a cycle of more villains being created because in the end, the hero is also as human as everyone else who can't save everyone. I think overtime more villains would blame the hero for their sufferings until even the hero who isn't seen as a human anymore just breaks down, exhausted from everyone screaming help in every direction at once demanding attention. Ignore one person and they'll be another one who will come get you one day. Sounds scary, I'm never becoming a hero.
@rise9666
@rise9666 3 года назад
@@danicook9767 I get that, but at the same time, the hero is expected to help everyone all the time, you can see that in the scene in which they apologize for not having helped everyone, and when the villain asks "what about me?" it's as if the villain expected even more of the hero, not only saving everyone else but also the villain, blaming the hero for having saved others instead of them, which is of course selfish to some degree. I also feel that the "what about us?" by the hero is the first time in the song that the hero cared about themselves, in the entire song they make it clear that they try to save everyone, but the "us" implies that they mean "you and me" That realisation makes the scene even sadder for me, because the first time the hero talks about their own well-being, the villain asks about their own happiness, stealing the hero's right to take care of themselves for once ykyk
@danicook9767
@danicook9767 3 года назад
@@rise9666 you do make a good point for that. But I've seen I don't know how many time when the hero has ignored what the villain had needed for the fact that they are the bad guy and that their needs simply do not matter for that reason. And there does come a time when it all comes down to a single persons feelings and what could've been done to stop what had happened. (But it doesn't excuse the villain for what they've done and how they've handled it or for the lives that were lost.) Right now I have a story about how the villain was best friends with the hero, and if the hero was just there a little bit more, then it could've been stopped, there never would've been the villain. And it all also plays into cause and effect as well. (Sorry for such a long paragraph, I never get talk about things like this and it's nice to do it.)

I sense deep sibling rivalry- I’d like to write a backstory The “hero” was the “villain’s” older sibling. They were amazing at physical combat and archery and the “villain” aspired to be just as successful as them. When the “villain” finally found their gift in magic, people saw it as bad and decided to banish them. For years, the “villain” runs away, the “hero” looking for them to ask for forgiveness as they never saw the “villain’s” gift as bad or dark. By the time they meet, the “villain” is convinced that somehow, the “hero” played into kicking her out, though none of that was true. The “hero” tries to mend the bond between them as the “villain” expresses their pain while refusing to come back. And that’s it! This is just my idea, nothing proving it’s true lol

Can I write a story here? 2 sisters in a war: The older one would end up defecting to the villain's side while the younger one stayed at the hero's side. The reason? The older one was tasked to assassinate enemies, given that she's an espionage officer. She is also one of the best soldiers her faction ever had. Her younger sister of course, strived to be like her elder sister. However, some circumstances had struck and separated both. It wasn't until 9 years later, the older sister reunite with her younger sister and the remaining faction. She worked with them. However, the enemy told her the truth about the war, and how her faction's failures in giving the poor equal rights were the reason the war started, why her parents and brother are dead, and also the reason why her husband, child, friends, apprentices, and minions died trying to negotiate the means to end the war. Furious, she spitefully sends the faction who tried rescuing her away. Thinking she was brainwashed, the "good" faction kidnapped her, only to be beaten the shit by a pissed-off older sister. She tells them why she defected and realizing the pain she went through, her faction, her friends, and her sister tried to apologize but the older sister rejected and left them, with the doctor and her sister being hit the hardest.

Now the Villain is pissed and thinks the hero never cared, while the hero is also hurt because they don't want their relationship to end like this. It's not fair how the hero always gets accused of not being able to save everyone. They are human too. And they have went trough shit too. Why do people forget heroes are just as hurt? There's nothing more tiresome then being the hero. Fixing everyone's bullshit and STILL getting blamed. Edit : And having a sob story doesn't justify someone's actions. The villains can't just use that excuse to do whatever the hell they want. Heroes have it bad too. Who's there for hero? Who's there to hold their hand? The heroes often forget the person who need saving the most, themselves. They forget themselves to fix the villain's mess and this is how they get repaid? Heroes are literally selfless. Don't even try it. You can't just ignore all of the awful things a villain did just because they had a "dark past". We all have. Heroes can't save everyone. And it's not their fault for that. Villains need to learn that they need to save themselves, because in life you have to be your own hero. They made bad choices, they'll have to live with them. Also how when a hero makes a small mistake and no one ever let's them forget it, but when a villain literally hurts/kills so many people, everyone just bats their eyes and say that he somehow "had a point"?? Or how a villain does one good deed and everyone agrees that they have redeemed themselves. Well, if villains can be forgotten for their "mistakes", then so should heroes. Also, the way a hero would sacrifice you for the world, a villain would sacrifice you for their own goals. Accidently get in a way of a villain, and suddenly they'll turn against you. This isn't a hate comment. But I'm so sick of hearing songs not only "justifying" the villain's actions, but also making the hero look like the bad guy. Purposefully. Whether you like it or not, the hero is only responsible for their own actions, not other people's. And being the hero doesn't mean being a saint. They can do whatever they have to, to fix the problem or save the world. They can kill. And yes, it's also justifiable for them to get revenge or avenge someone. That's how it works. The difference between a hero and villain aren't the actions, but rather the motives behind them.

My theory is that the hero was once the villain's only friend, the only one who tried to help them. But after being cought up with saving the rest of the people, they didn't get the opportunity to help the villain. They went separate ways, and the villain, to take out their anger, began doing evil crimes. But another reason for that was because they were hoping that maybe then the hero would come back for them and notice them if they did crimes, albeit the encounter wouldn't be very pleasant.

But sometimes we can't always help people if they dont see that they can change, and sometimes, we are stubborn and try to help that person. And sadly, we are human that can't help everybody. While I don't think The "hero" is a saint by any means, I do see the good in them and trying to help the "villian". Honestly both sides have valid points. You can read into either of there stories and end up siding with one over the other. Mostly people are siding with the villain cuz it’s easier and kinda enjoyable to find fault in good things. But if you choose to believe one then you’re choosing not to believe the other one at all. But if you look at it as there both right then they are just morally grey character’s. With a “hero” who has a bit of complex issue but foolishly wants to help an old friend. And a “villain” who doesn’t accept help even when it’s given to them hurting everyone around them including the “Hero” and “ Villain“ Edit: one more thing I realized. Is that they don’t call each other by they’re respected “roles” like the “Hero” doesn’t call the “Villain” a villain and viceVersa which is to reinforce the fact that they’re morally gray. Because after all they understand each other more then we could because they know the whole story.

I like to see this as the "hero" being an ex-villain that was helped by the "villain" who is now an ex-hero who has been done wrong, partly due to the ex-villain's actions, and as things spiraled, and the ex-villain gained more respect, and the ex-hero became more hated, it becames unbearable for the ex-hero, which all leads to this

The way I'm reading this, the two used to be very close, but 'hero' couldn't see how they were hurting the 'villain'. Eventually, the villain got tired of being brushed off and never feeling like they were enough for their friend, and that's when the hero finally realized what was going on, but by then the villain was so bitter towards them. The hero is really trying, but everything they say makes it worse, like "I'm just trying to help you, let me help you!", and "Just take my hand, I'll be your knight in shining armour", as if the hero _needs_ to 'help' to feel good. The villain has come to realize this, hence the "just beneath the surface you're convinced that you're above me." "Trust me, please believe me, this won't stop the hurt for long" and "You are not my hero, you don't know how it felt" work together, the hero tries to understand, but they go about it all wrong and they simply _don't_ understand, which is where the villain comes in claiming the hero really doesn't understand, because they were so busy playing the hero, that they forgot to be a friend. The final line is where the villain is done, seeing that the hero still can't just be a friend and the hero had frustrated them to a breaking point. Despite the hero's best efforts, because they just simply couldn't understand that the villain didn't need a hero, they had gone about it all wrong and only messed it up further. You see, there really is no "hero and villain", just two people who didn't work out, they just couldn't level with each other.

All the comments are about how the "villain" is actually the hero, and, while I do kind of side with that, I also don't. I don't think either are "hero" or "villain" they're both just people who have made mistakes that have been destructive. Based on what I interpret from there current situation (as in the time that the song is being sung in this universe) the "villain" is doing something bad, something the "hero" is trying to stop. The "villain" is acting out like this due to bad (bad is really an understatement here) past experiences, at least some of which involve the "hero". In the past, the "hero" could have helped the "villain", and this whole situation (along with a lot of emotional torture to the "villain") could have been avoided. The "hero" did not help, for whatever reason. The "villain" is now acting out on anger, resentment, and fear, and hurting people. The "hero" comes sweeping in to save the day, to prove their worth to the people, to be a face to look up to (as said in the song, 'here comes the hero complex'). This of course makes the "villain" angry, because the "hero" is impart guilty for the pain and suffering of the "villain". In short, the "hero" only seems to care when it benefits them, and the "villain" acts out and hurts people, continuing the cycle of pain. Neither are a hero. Because it's always so complicated, there are so many layers to every person. So many things driving them to do what's they do, for the better or for the worse. I could also be interpreting it differently from how most people do, or from how the person who wrote the song intended it to be. Maybe the "hero" has realized their past wrong-doings and is trying to make a difference for the better. Maybe the "villain" isn't putting anyone else in harm's way (it could be about a su1c1d3 attempt, for example.). There are so many things, there can be no definitive answer unless we know every detail about the situation and the past they'd had together that's they seem to be discussing, so we'll probably never properly understand. Anyways, that's what this made me think. If you're here, thanks for reading through all that (or just skipping to the end to see if there was a tldr, also very reasonable)

God, this made me cry. I’ve fallen on both sides for years. Doing everything in my power to stop everyone around me from suffering and killing themselves, but then turning around and rejecting the help of others, because deep down, I’m assuming they’re the same as me. The hero isn’t some shallow social climber. They’re scared to death of losing the villain. But they *do* have a hero complex. They think they have the moral high ground, and they look at the villain with pity, like they aren’t equals. The hero has the weight of the world on their shoulders, but they think that weight is a noble undertaking. That they know best for those “poor souls” still in the dark. The villain has been through so much. They want help. They desperately need it. But no matter the intentions of the hero, their own insecurity and self hatred prevents them from getting that help. It’s easier to admit you’re the worst than to admit you were doing bad and knew it. But nothing they say about the hero is an outright lie. It’s complicated, and I don’t think either of them are right. Both the hero and the villain can exist simultaneously in the same person. Because really, there’s no such thing as a hero or a villain. It’s something we made up to simplify people. Simplify ourselves.

This song reminds me so much of my oc's, their twins, one loves to help people(the hero), while the other just doesn't care anymore and doesn't need her brother's help, or anyone saving her(the villain), The villain was so angered for the years her parents loved her brother more and tossed her aside, the hero noticed this and tried to help his sister but his sister just shoved him away, this ended up leading to problems for the both of them, and one day, the sister had enough and ran away, years later they reunited when they fought eachother at a bank robbery, and when he found out it was his sister and it lead to him finding her on the rooftop of a building they went when they were kids, and he tried to help her, but it ended up like how it does in the song, it may not make sense, but in my head it kind if does😅

I’m late to this but I wanted to take my own stab at the story behind the song: It’s about two girls, lonely girls, at one point in their lives they grew close together, maybe as friends or maybe even further than that. But one day they did something. Something big. Though it’s not clear what exactly they did, 2 things were for sure: it was horrible, and they did it together. The cause of this incident made the two break off and go their own separate ways. One, who wanted to redeem herself and move on, she tried and helped many people since then, seeing herself as a “hero”, a good person who helped everyone in need, she was already over what had happened before. The other girl, however, broke because of it. She saw it as a terrible, horrible, irredeemable act of terror. She isolated herself, grieving in her own pain, and giving herself the title of “villain”, an unforgivable monster who could never be helped. What had happened then was who she was, a monster who prevailed and stayed with her even today. Maybe a year after it all, possibly more, where the song takes place, the “hero” finds the “villain”, not just to reconnect with her but to also help her. In her perspective, she knew how the “villain” saw herself, and she didn’t want her to feel like that, she wanted to save her. In the “villains’” perspective, she knew what the “hero” had done. She took it as ignorance, she saw it as her trying to be better than her, she knew in her head that the “hero” thought she was above her. She thought that the “hero” was lying to herself when she’s really just as bad as the “villain”. But what broke her in the end of the song, wasn’t because of the “hero’s” attempt at helping others, or her coming here to brag about how much better she is. It was her timing. Because out of everyone she “saved”, she never saved her world, the “hero” left her when she needed her the most at the time. Neither of them were a “hero” or a “villain”, they were two people who had done something terrible together and went their own ways because of it. One was over it, one was broken from it. Hopefully this made sense ._. Edit: credit to “Madison Harpter” for the last two sentences, their comment was in the original video for this song :)

I'm late, like super late, but I wanted to say it To me, what I understand, sounds like the past between said 'Hero' and 'Villain' went in a..breaking direction The 'Hero' seems like a person who's been trying to help people as much as possible. In the midst of doing that, They've 'left' the 'villain'. The 'hero' realizes this too late, and tries to help, like always. The 'Villain' seems to have gone through a lot, and once they were 'left' by the 'hero', they thought that no one would ever understand their pain, and everyone will betray them. At this point 'hero' tries their best and goes the wrong way about it, coming off as manipulative (Something similar might've happened before). Heroes can't save everyone. Villains have motives. It's not easy to understand. The one best at understanding you is yourself. When someone doesn't understand, it hurts. A lot. That's why looking at all sides, instead of picking just one, is best.
