It's good that you realized that the sound quality is not related to how big the magnet is but most people are impressed with looks so I think that's why Fosgate dressed it up to look meaner. Good video... thanks.
Really? No really. So you just looked at a magnet and decided which is better. Firstly the diameter alone wont tell you anything. The Fostgate has two narrower magnets stacked so its taller. Secondly you don't know the magnetic strength of each magnet nor do you know which one produces more force in the VC gap. The VC diameter also does not tell you anything. One could be more layers or longer and have better cooling so its entirely possible for a 2" VC to outperform a 2.5" VC. The frame on the fosgate also appears to be more rigid. Lastly you admit it even sounds better. As for the magnet cover, its aesthetics. If someone doesn't want to research before they buy something, its their own fault.
+Empire Reviews True, but you did a video removing a cover, exposing a magnet, and then judging it on the magnet size and telling people to go with the one with the larger magnet sub for the value. I know in the end you said you prefer the Rockford but I think it would be better to tell people NOT to base their impression of a sub by the VC size or magnet size :)
Why would they think that? Rockford says the sub handles 400rms. They don't make any false claims. That Xplod was rated for IIRC 250rms. Magnet size is just one factor in a multitude of factors that go into designing a woofer. Heard of Klippel analysis? Rockford uses it... does your brand?
@@automachinehead yes there is. I'm no engineer and it's been a while since I read on it. That's why pro audio woofers use thinner but larger diameter magnets. A larger diameter magnet will create a stronger magnetic field in the gap than a thicker but smaller diameter one will. I came across the article researching to build a set of pro audio cabinets.
But the fosgate coil runs much cooler and hits much harder, but it isn't as efficient. So do you want to run a more powerful amp am hit hard or run a Sony and wish for more
I have two 12 inch fosgates p1's to be exact with a 300 watt kicker mono block pushing them ! Underpowered i know im going to be upgrading to the fosgate 500 or 1000 watter i useually as a rule of thumb like to use a amp thats a lil underpowerd for the subs, its better then going overpowered and smokin up a pair of 200 dollar a piece woofers! But my amp now is greatly underpowerd but they slap and hard ! For all the crap kicker gets they have great equipment if shop their pro comp lines! Its good stuff for the cost and still that small amp was still almost 200$ when i bought it two yrs ago
+Dub Step oh for sure i just havent shelled out the 200- 300 bucks for the right amp yet! Fosgate makes a 500 watt mono made to go with the p1s i should be grabin that up very soon
OH ....AND the real reason they do it is make mag look nice... As in for nice installs were ya see mag as in a plexi box ... or on inverted installs ...
Comp stands for competition. It's an abbreviation that was given to the sub way back in the day. Which version P2? The current P2 is rated for 400rms, right on Rockford's website. I'd post a link but it won't let me.
What matters is the sound reproduction and the longevity. I've been bumping this same speaker hard for 2+ years and it hits hard and clean daily, just as it sounded at break-in. This same speaker can be had today for very little cash and you just can't go wrong with the quality.
@@yoboybigsexy5281 - I'm sorry to hear that. The speaker is still available on the market with an average of 4.5 star customer reviews. I have since replaced mine and sold it cheap to some young dude building a basic system. The sub was performing as well as ever when I sold it for a charitable price. The only reason I even got rid of it, was because I have since discovered Skar Audio. While I still believe in the quality of this sub, it cannot begin to compare with my Skar Sub. Skar Subs are so well-made and hit so hard for little cost, it's a no-brainer. I've been enjoying my Skar Sub now since last Summer and I couldn't be happier, as it has revolutionized my low end sound at such a low price point, I was skeptical their product would even survive any long-term use. No regrets, maybe that's where you'll find a good replacement. Peace.
@@yoboybigsexy5281 - I have the SDR-12 | 12" 1,200 Watt Max Power Car Subwoofer Dual 4 Ohm SDR-12 D4 Also using the... AR1X12V | Single 12" Armor Coated Ported Subwoofer Enclosure AR1X12V My true RMS power output to the sub is right around 540 watts, even though the amp is marketed to put out like 900 in 2 ohm. Lol. I'm into clean sound with a nice bump. I don't play music for others to hear it, but you gotta have some clean and somewhat powerful bass if you genuinely like music in your ride for your own enjoyment. That being said, the RMS handling of this sub is a good match for my amp. I recall reading a negative review on this very sub on Amazon and this person was claiming that Skar lied about the RMS rating because it couldn't handle the 1,200 watts they were pushing into it. Lol. That person knows nothing about RMS vs peak.
Mate, I have to correct you here, the RF sub you compared to the Sony is not justified. The first issue is the subwoofers, both from different year builds. The Sony is just a traditional old speaker type whilst the RF has vented (and exposed) voice coils, to improve on heat dissipation and power. The Sony does not have this . I agree with the magnet casing being deceiving but that is only a cosmetic issue. When you bench test them side by side, with a clean amp and same box, then you will clearly see the RF outperforms the Sony sub. A huge magnet does not mean the subwoofer is better, its the other components, like magnet material, (strontium or barium), open vented voice coils (provide better efficiency and better cooling, materials being used, (like paper over Kevlar) makes the subwoofer performs better. Secondly, the manufacture (RF, have manuals for its product to provide their customers with a t/s details of the driver and the recommended box enclosure depending on the type of :bass" you are after. Sony does not do this with their products and it shows they don't bother what type of enclosure you use / abuse their products. I have a pair of P210S4's in my current car being run off a 200 watt amp and it is pretty impressive for its size and I have been testing amps, speakers subwoofers for over two decades so I have a pretty good idea when it comes to audio components. I agree with your statement about the magnet cap, but with regards to research and technology these days, you will get better audio components with smaller magnets, take for example the Morel Supremo 12, has a 5.1" voice coil and was voted the best subwoofer in a recent Australian test by INCAR magazine. It may have the same size magnet like the RF, here,, but other quality components that make up the driver. Unless you bench test subwoofers, you cannot judge them on their cosmetic appearance as you need proof to support your theory. Thanks for sharing the video.
It's a double stacked magnet though. Magnet size doesn't matter if it's double stacked. Sony sucks and should never be compared to Rockford. But I run soundqubed and a Rockford amp. Not trying to hate on the video just sharing my opinions.
vm audio did the same thing what you have to look at is the bl the bl for a 300 dollar woofer is between 15 and 20 usually depending on the brand just make sure it's measured in tesla meters and a high bl is also dependent on the magnet gap a smaller gap will deliver a higher bl than a larger gap but low level china stuff those numbers are usually fibbed anyway
@ Jaudio.. Man I used to own Sony xplods, they didn't hit near as hard or deep as fosgate's.. The only sub that they make that might actually be good is their XS-GS120LD.. My overall point is that if your completely broke & you want a little bass in your ride, Sony Xplods are alright, their easy to get.. Just swing by Wal-Mart & grab a pair.. The 2nd to best model that I seen that Sony sells is like $70, a Fosgate p2 is going for about $100.. Fosgate p2's aren't God subs, but they definitely aren't garbage subs.. & as for the durability issue, I've never had a problem with them.. My dad has the p2 model that your showing, he's had it for 6 years & hasn't had a problem out of it.. & yes I have a p3 right now & yes it is a better sub than a p2.. It's the most recent model, I think its the 2011.. But anyway, the newer model is way better than the model your showing.. I had a p2 10 in the newer model & it did great, but I wanted more bass so I went with a p3 15, and put that 10 in my gf's blazer.. & she hasn't had a problem with it yet, we've had that sub for probably about a year so far & after slamming on it for a good while the cone just barely gets warm.. I have a friend that's had a p2 12 for about 3 years and hasn't had a problem out of it, and he beats the living hell out it everyday.. But idk man, if you like Sony & your happy with it then run it.. I love my fosgate's, they sound good & hit hard for me.. If I had the choice I'd probably run sa 12's, reason I don't is because I'm getting pretty good bang for my buck with fosgate.. It hasn't ever let me down..
Ohhh the GS120LD was nice also the Sony that had the center Red pole that looked like the cerwin vega strokors . i was able to get good strong bass from a Sony using a 3 cf2 Box with a 12 X 3 port tuned at 28 hz , now that Hit the Lows real hard check out my vid on it and look for ya self . im NOT saying Sony is Boss coz it aint its crap in compared to SKAR SA so forth .
you might be looking at an updated version of the subwoofer or a dvc which rockfords may had generally had doubled power rating to their dvc subs or atleast nearly twice as much but thats a maybe
this puts a whole new perspective on things, i was wondering why in the specs the p2's don't seem suitable for a ported box. i was up in arms on whether to get the p2-2x12 pack with 2 of these in it but now i think the polk db1222 might be the go for me haha
Just measured my brand new RF P2D2-12 and it definitely has a 6 inch by 1.5 inch magnet on it. It looks a lot different than yours too. It has a rubber magnet cover and the terminals are in a different location. Maybe a new improved model??
Indeed the older RF was GREAT , good quality and good sounding Now RF runs off a name not quality , this is seen in many products we are in the throw away age
and also that This sub at my local car audio shop retails for 279$ and seriously there is NOT 279$ of worth in this sub 2 inch VC and a small magnet , that doesnt handle much more then its rated for at all .
lol lucky me i have an oldschool P2 which the model number is RFP2410 which in old school terms is a punch XLC so it looks like about a 2.5" voice coil the magnets about 5.25inches in diameter if the hub was off which is just a rubber hub around the core which actually is quite smart for protecting it from getting chipped and about 2.25" tall of a motor structior not including voice coil or suspension etc. we did notice after dad heard my rockfords he decided to get some rockfords but they didnt measure up in sound quality to mine the bass wasnt nearly as clean and i had just thought he got screwed over with some crap someone put the wrong suspension in on a recone or something like job... did rockford get crappy at some point or have a dry spell?
also for people to know a deeper magnet especially deeper core is a main gateway to cleaner sound production though a larger diameter strengthens the power of the magnetic field which increases power handling and volume output but just note i didnt learn that in a text book and actually i may be mostly guessing lol
Rockford Used to make Bloody awesome subs The HX series for instance was amazing in SQ and SPL today its just not rubbish but no where to the standard RF used to be . There amps are still top noche but for a lower price you can get the same quality in SKAR / Sundown / Audiopipe / Cresendo / Soundmagus / and so forth . dont think im just making up random ass claims to what i say . ive looked at the speakers even down to the thickness of the copper on the voice coils and by the looks and price the xplod does seem to be a better option .
lol so me getting older shit and getting hooked on it was a lucky break i have 2 oldschool punch stage 1 dvc's that have larger magnet diameters while maintaining the magnet depth of my oldschool punch HE's which made me think about picking up some crapped out ones like them and getting my hands on some HE's i dont mind popping apart and replacing the magnet with the heavier one and see how much harder it can throw down :3... i need a job so i can pick up some shit right away x.x
J Audio Car audio lol but still on 2 10s my rockfords seemingly popped a trunk open of a 2014 toyota and the amp was getting the power to operate from a 200watts max load cutoff actually putting it lightly it may cut off at around 180watts max dc and thats all the 2-10s must had needed to pop the trunk lid with infact the subs pointed at the back seat yet each 10 of those 2 had a rms rating of 200watts and rockfords reputation may had seemed that they handle more than they are rated for ofcourse thats your own risk to test if you are willing to risk it yourself and the camera i used sucked though you could still hear the mics chirpping from being raped by the sound pressure its those squeeky sounds youd hear on the audio and the motionless mirror may had been due to a harmonic balance.. or maybe that was when the trunk popped i think possibly but yeah 2-10s only being served id guess 150watts off the amp capable of 400 rms together and yet they blow a new model cars trunk open? what does sony have that can match that?
before comparing rockford to a cheap ass pos explode you should really be looking into the technology that they put into all of there quality products... rockford is top of the line and a company that has been in the car audio industry for years.....they know what they are doing
+Empire Reviews I do believe their is a chance you have no clue what you are talking about or you are new to car audio..... explodes are trash compared to almost any ting on the market..... fucking dumb ass..... and in price there is a $10 difference.... I'd rather pay the extra 10 and get a descent rf p2. .... I personally am way above this level of car audio..... but for anyone just looking for everyday bump in their car go with RF. ... they also stand behind their product and don't sell to box stores such as walmart lmfao
+Empire Reviews obviously I wouldn't take a p2 over xfl's vfl's. . or HD. ... it's a totally different class... the comparison was between explodes and p2's.... so now that you know your wrong you gonna switch it up and throw in a different brand... at the end of the day it is about ....yes the box for 1..... but also the x max that the sub can produce.... more x max. .. more air to move.... box has to be suitable to provide movement for the air.... all said and done you need a good box.... and good subs
Ahhh... P2's were rated for 250rms, and gave a lot of output with that power level, especially in a properly designed ported enclosure. Great subs... shit on that sony xplod by a mile... hook it up in the right enclosure and it'll surprise you.
Wow. This isn't the olden age. Doesn't matter how big your magnet is. I could have a one inch magnet that pushes harder than a 2.5 inch one. Also, Sony is a cheap brand for subs. The quality is overrated. Speaking from experience.
Haha. Rubbish subwoofer video but if you listen to this again from the start but imagine he has multiple personalities all discussing a subwoofer, it's pure gold. Well done guys.
that gen and current gen of the p2 would take most kickers all kenwood and all sony subs to the woodshed and beat the hell out of em, it will kill jbl and is par with jl mid level subs, jl and rockford would be my recommendation for any discerning sound enthusiast, if you want nasty loud sound kicker or sony
you must as you called me a beginner if you belive that CEA compliant means all and is 100% accurate . you own P3s NOT p2s theres a diff between em .i was running a GOOD amp 2 G wire no 4 G like you said .i ran 2 subs in my car and even the sony didnt blow as quick as the RF , The RF is a Cheap and nasty sub . maybe i should of compared the Soft parts of the 2 Subs . the RF has a less wound coil and smaller then the Xplod single spider the Xplod had Dual - amazingly - . Thanks Jaudio
THANK YOU most people think Rockford is the shit. I know a gut that wants 200 for his p2. ill show him this video and tell him to gfhs lol hell ya I will.
ok you have this all WRONG . its for people MOST of teenagers that get these Subs thinking they have a woofer that will handle MASSIVE watts as it looks like it has a massive motor structure when indeed this is not the case . kinda like people who run around with Kicker Comps and think the Comp means competition ,
Just because my user name is fosgate4life doesn't mean that I don't think there are other great brands out there. Kicker, Jl ect makes good products too that you can get for a decent price if your on a budget. I'm sorry jaudio91, but I can't let you misinform everybody like that. If you really want the truth, build you a ported box to that p2's specs, run you a cea compliant 4 gauge wire kit, with a reputable amp like a fosgate p300 or an amp that's cea compliant & you'll see what you missed..
Whatever the sound ,putting a big ass cover on the magnet is an epic fail all it does is take up precious box volume. I'v tried to get the rubber one off my P1 but its on there tight!
Damn you Rockford! You Cheaters! I never bought Rockfordfosgate. Its another one of those companies that have great products but have tricks up the sleeves.
Rockford Fosgate subwoofers sound good because the magnet covers add more compression in what ever box you use the do not cheat xplod is a nice sub but the p1 p2 and p3 are the best sub of the lower level subs there cheap and bang hard you slap in two 18'' rockfords and your gonna be busting ears just saying dont make videos about the truth about subs if your dont actually know what your talking about
+wyatt Pineapples im sorry what they add more compression . NO they do NOT . im not sure where you herd that but its bullshit. in fact it takes box space up
Wow thise are shit compared to a directed audio xs d4 subwoofer . It has a dual stacked 40 ounce magnets has a three inch voice coil and dual spiders with 16 mm or more of excursion.....
With Rockford Fosgate you have to go with the T Series But the p3's 15's d2's are pretty awesome not RE audio I went through multiple sets of subwoofers check out my youtube channel johnalenwork53 please subscribe Thanks and looking forward to some more videos from you brother
Are you on drugs? You need to sit in my ride, right now I have a p3 15 on a kicker zx1000.. But I still have my old p2 10 & p300 in storage, I could hook it up & invalidate that argument quick.. Yes, that p2 10 would outplay that Sony 12 with ease.. Like rowlanddb said, that fosgate sub will kill it in all apps.. But that Sony 12 vs that fosgate p2 12? No comparison, that p2 10 vs Sony 12? Still no comparison.. Anybody new to car audio seeing this, this guy is a beginner..
This comparison is dumb, Sony over rates everything. I've owned both unfortunately(sony), the xplodes did nothing but xlpode.lol any fosgate sub is better than any sony sub... I use a 15 p1 new model on my house system,it sounds great. .. the only thing sony makes good is home audio,I.e. tv's ect.
That's cool I just hate Sony .the only good experience I've had with them is home audio, my home system has the p1 15 I wanted a really good low watt sub to run on the home sub amp. And yes it is sony but like I said before the home audio and is still some of the best, but there car audio is junk. This is from personal experience owned and tested. Great choice on the p3 those subs are nasty I had one 12 a while ago I liked it. I like my 10 inch mtx 9500 better.that is the single nastiest sub I've owned so far.
J Audio Car audio will keep my power Hx2 new subs arnt made like they used to.. granted new tech is involved but back in the day bass was just better then todays stuff
