In this setting (suspending the idea that Batman can escape at any time for now) they left his mask on because Batman himself is on trial, not whoever is behind the mask. They're putting the symbol on trial rather than the man, because the symbol is what they're claiming has created their alternate personas.

@ericemanwu

The end of trial reminds me of a TV tropes entry about Bruce. That he went through something so traumatic that he spent the rest of his life trying to ensure nobody else goes through what he did. And because of that vow, there are very few stories where batman can step away from the mission. He's a hero, but he's also tragic because no matter how many criminals he punches, he can never reach that point where he feels okay walking away willingly. Shame forced him to in the dcau, but he walked right back because it got worse again. revelation and reform pushed him to do so in the nolanverse. The Arkhamverse had him walk away for the sake of his family, but it also indicates he just changed skins to keep going. The Batman animated died in the line of duty (presumably, since the mission never ended). And as some comics say, being batman is an eternal duty that the universe keeps putting on Bruce. As you said, the playground of his own world means that winning or walking away are nearly impossible. But like a valiant warrior, he still tries.

Personally, this episode makes me think about Spectacular Spider-Man. Tombstone basically orders for a lot of the supervillains to be created so that Spider-Man can be kept busy while his criminal empire returns to normal operations. So in a sense, superheroes could sort of create supervillains since it’s like the escalation of weapons to win a war. Of course, in Spider-Man these created supervillains were all originally regular crooks who were running rampant until Peter became a superhero.

But at the end of the day its their choice to keep doing these things. Like when Sandman and Spidey fought for the last time, he told him he wastes his powers for his own selfish gain and could do something better, but he doesnt. Or at least until the end of the episode where he saved those people. Point is, they choose to keep doing what they do. Escalation is only avoidable when the bad guys accept what they are doing is wrong.

Batman, by his core essence, has always existed as an answer to the injustice within Gotham and not as the direct cause of it. He exists because of it, and desperately fights for a time in which he's not needed anymore. He did not create his rogues gallery. However, it is likely true that because of the nature of who they are, the fact that he exists is part of what motivates them to continue in their ways. Some, though not all, would simply retire should Batman ever go missing, as much of their way of life is based around the competition of being the first one to "Best the Bat". They seek the legendary stature and influence that would come with such a triumph as though they were pirate captains at sea in search of legendary lost treasure. This is of course not Batman's fault. He is simply doing what he can to make Gotham a safer place to live in. Ultimately, Batman is a piece of the balance within Gotham. Should crime ever spiral out of control, there will always be someone to take up the mantle of the Batman to even the odds for the citizens just trying to live their peaceful lives. However, so long as there is Batman, there will always be those who seek the fame and infamy that would come with defeating him. Should Batman ever do so well as to eliminate crime in Gotham, he will hang up his cowl until the day comes that the need arises again.

Its why I can never take the idea that batman is creating villains seriously, and that somehow they are the victims and are faultless, I mean sure he can't and won't kill the Joker or anyone else because he respects the law enough to help them out and he knows villains are humans too and most have a shred of good in them. But to leave them alone invites disaster, is there any wonder why batman even came to be? And how everything would have gone to shit if he stopped? Its like everyone is either on the side of "just kill them" or "Batman should just stop because he is opressive" when the circumstances taken outside of the most biased stories clearly show that these villains refuse to change despite even Batman's best efforts. The real issue lies in the medium, that comics cannot end, nobody can die or change for long there will always be a status quo to return to.

I disagree with you that Batman does not work outside of context. Vigilantes exist in the real world. Batman fights injustice when the systems that hold justice in place fail, he just happens to dress like a Bat. And that itself has its place as he does so to frighten criminals. It worked in the Dark Knight Trilogy and it worked in The Batman. While most people find it ridiculous, the idea of a super strong, highly skilled man dressed as a bat is quite terrifying.

He claimed, “*there would be no Batman if there’s no supercriminals*”. Going by his renowned origin, Bruce Wayne’s parents were mugged and gunned down in a grimy alley by Joe Chill, an average crook in an already crime infested megalopolis. Bruce Wayne set out to become what he became because he vowed that he’d do anything and everything within his grasp to prevent the events that took his parents from ever repeating themselves; a random act of violence by a dime a dozen criminal. Additionally, the symbiotic relationship that Batman shares with his rogues would still exist if flamboyantly decorated characters like The Joker and The Riddler were permanently replaced by the likes of Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni - though maybe not as on the nose as we know it to be. I reckon that as long as there is crime, there will always be a warranted degree for vigilantism (i.e. just look at how Uvalde’s PD expertly handled their proceedings and note that the US Supreme Court has ruled that law enforcement is not required to serve its denizens). This video was blatantly off the fucking mark, and “Implicitly Pretentious”’s username unironically does checkout. And for the majority, I surmise that the kangaroo court episode was self-explanatory. TLDR: If Gotham were without “supercriminals”, Bruce Wayne would still be Batman because the man that murdered his parents was no supercriminal.

That's where I've always seen room for the Bruce Wayne persona to come in. Yes, Batman intentionally plays up the differences between himself and Bruce to reinforce the disguise, but there's still room for Bruce to push against corruption in the Gotham police and justice departments. And generally, he's shown doing that. People always ask why Batman doesn't kill the Joker, but the answer simply comes down to the fact that he doesn't trust himself to be able to stop killing villains. He believes the Joker deserves to die, but some criminals, especially ones like the Ventriloquist or Two-Face are mentally unwell and need treatment. If he killed the Joker, he'd look at someone like Black Mask and think that, while they're not as bad as the Joker, they're pretty close, and kill them. Then he'd find another criminal that's a little less worse than Black Mask and kill them, and so on and so on. He's worried that the moment he makes killing an option, he won't be able to keep it as only a last resort. And then he'd become no better than the criminals he fights.

So this episode is the contrast to the message of The Dark Knight, that Batman’s dramatic theatricality inspired the Joker and criminals to take on an even more extreme position.

The city is doomed if you need someone like Batman facing criminals every night. Just imagine that an entire city depends on ONE GUY to make everything better.

This episode feels like a far outcry from the original days when superheroes were created as an wishful answer to solve real world practical problems. literally when Batman was acting as "the world's greatest DETECTIVE," instead of maddening violent vigilante as we view him today.

In all honesty in my opinion, Joe Chill created Batman the night he shot Thomas and Martha Wayne, but the thing about how I see Batman in the dcau is that he’s some sort of a demon to Gotham criminal empires, the guy can appear and disappear out of nowhere like an apparition, plus in scarecrows debut episode “Never Fear” when he basically overdoses on his own fear toxin, his intoxicated mind warps the image of Batman into a bat like demon, maybe I’m just hallucinating maybe I’m just reading into this too much

I also disagree with your opinion on batman. Some of the best batman comics did not have a rouge present. Like the one with the librarian who left bodies on shelves in the library based on their job and the dewy decimal system. The rouges are just the icing on the cake.

You know I used to think batman was responsible for all of you. Now I see that you all would have ended up the same way, batman or no. Oh sure the gimmicks and costumes would be different but you'd all still be out there causing misery for this city. The truth is it was all of you that made HIM.

"He can only exist in a playground-like world" This is the problem with the second and, to a lesser extent, third of Nolan's films. If you take Ledger's Joker out of TDK there's no reason to watch it. TDKR is suitably exaggerated, and "Begins" straight-up rules.

I'd like to think Batman saved Gotham. Most of Beyonds villians aren't "Batmans Rouges" or people with hundreds of body counts. There will always be villains, but a lot of them are more humanized.

"On the big picture of the DCAU we know it won't" Man, Batman Beyond is a bad future timeline at this point. I never bought it as "The future" just like I didn't buy 2099 as "The future" XP But anyway that aside yeah, things will never change still but hey this first show isolated on it's own will always be special how it didn't get totally lost in the capes and cowls and kept a really grounded human world for these characters. Even if the kater shows still have plenty of heart and are good it really did lose that for me in a big way.
@Kirkmaximus

Sadly the "Future" is going to be much, much worse than the one from Batman Beyond.

That is what I assumed too. Batman would rather kill himself than let the joker disease turn him into another gang member who uses genetically modified off-spring to do his dirty work for him . Even Terry was smart enough to not play that mind-game with the Joker clone as he laughed back at him.

On anything resembling what people understand as normal logic, a bunch of these villians would hve been out on death row even with their psychological problems and plead for insanity these peoppe have terrorized the city and country for years. Even if Batman doesn't have the want to kill any of these people the citizens would. We seen that enough times. Even with the corrupt goverment officals in the city would see the value in taking out someone higher up then them just to btter their own position. But you know the old song and dance of reviving villians and heroes from the dead or just needing somethingnti fight is the whole point of these long run franchises. It's not like that Spider-Man: Life Story comic run where they told a story from his original apperance in the 60's to more modern times and then his death. Using a lot of iconic story lines and such as in betweens. But even then we see a beginning and end to Bruce Wayne with these series of shows in the DCAU where we see Bruce already found someone to take up the mantle at the end even as an old dying man.
