Restaurant staffs lined up to get insulted by him. One time he was in a Beverley Hills restaurant and a South American busboy walked up to his table waiting for his insult and Rickles handed him a twenty dollar bill and said: Now send this back to your country and tell your mother to buy a house. The guy loved it. There will never be another Don Rickles.

Don Rickels died in 2017 at age 90. His career lasted over 60 years. He made the comment several times that the only thing he really feared was that he would be forgotten soon after he died. Well, here we are in 2023, so not a chance Don, not a chance.

That isn't Lucille Ball, but there is a Dean Martin Roast for Lucy, and it's great. The woman on the end of the dais is Phyllis Diller, a groundbreaking stand-up comedian of her day. Funniest laugh in show business; still has not been topped in my book; also a brilliant pianist and painter. And way more attractive than she looked up there; that wig and makeup was all part of her 'schtick'.

If you listen to the end of his routines, he ends with love, equality and positiveness. Growing up in that time was different. It was so different. As a GenX'er, race and sexuality wasn't really a deal. I grew up in New Mexico in a historically 47% white, 47% hispanic and 6% black town. We were "the south" in the Civil War." Crazy history in Roswell besides the aliens. Everybody would cut jokes or use expressions... on others as well as themselves. Nobody got offended and gave as good as they got. We were much more unified. I wish the kids of today could experience it.

When I was a kid back in the ‘70’s, if Don Rickles was going to be on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, I would BEG my parents to let me stay up and watch him. Those were, and still are, the funniest of his talk show stints because he and Johnny went waaay back, both of them starting out as comedians in sometimes seedy bars and strip clubs. You could guess what drunken troubles they would get into when they were young performers. I would record the segment he was on with Johnny on a little audio tape recorder because he was SO funny and quick you could easily miss some of his barbs and ad libs. His jokes and conversations were totally ad libbed and unscripted - neither you, nor the host, nor even Don himself knew what exactly was going to happen. And every time it was a classic. The day Don Rickles died (4/6/17), Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute to him and he could barely keep his composure. Behind his “Mr. Insult” persona, Don was really a deeply gracious, generous, and loving man. I really miss the man, and his caustic humor and quick wit. One of the greats of improv comedy, for sure.

Don Rickles was a BEAST!! He roasted everybody, he just didn’t care. Of course everyone says that behind the scenes he was an absolute sweetheart of a man. Of course it was also a very different time. People used to know how to take a joke instead of crying over every little thing. Everyone did racist & sexist jokes back then, but everyone KNEW THEY WERE JOKES. Nobody got butt hurt and whiny about it. If it’s funny it’s funny and that’s all that matters, it is COMEDY after all. People need to lose the fragile little snowflake BS and grow up and act like adults instead of whiny little spoiled brats. If I go to a comedy show and a black comedian cracks jokes on whites I don’t care at all. Look at the reactions he was getting from everyone including the people he was cracking on, they were all laughing their heads off. It’s just a sign of the times that this couldn’t be done in today’s world. It’s a real shame.

The thing made Don Rickles comedy work was that everyone knew that he was a stern anti-bigot who worked many charitable events and civic events including social causes. The celebrities on the dais on Dean Martin’s Comedy Roasts were all his friends and also well known social activists. The point of racial, ethnic and political comedy in his era was to expose the stereotypes that people believed because ten years before these subjects and almost anything regarding sex weren’t openly discussed publicly and weren’t allowed on television at all. This was how barriers were broken but there was a technique known as crossing the line twice wherein your premise of the joke started out ridiculous and the follow up was more absurd. Some of the controversial comedians today have forgotten that technique and that’s why they’re running into bad press. They’ve forgotten that there’s an art to handling controversial subjects even without grace and still have everyone love you for what your real message was underneath.

There is sarcasm, derogatory remarks skewed of course, and quick wit. Other groups have a lot of great humor as well.
