Hearing Rodney Dangerfield for the First Time | REACTION | 

I was fortunate enough to be young during this time and it was so fun. Young people today have no idea what they missed.

That wasn't the trailer for caddyshack, it was the first scene with Rodney. Trailers were different then compared to today. Caddyshack was one of the best comedy's of all times, definitely recommend.

Caddyshack is a classic. You've got to keep in mind the time it was made, the pace is different from a modern movie and to say that it wasn't PC is an understatement, but it's definitely worth watching. It's definitely one of the best comedies of the 80's though. Not on the same level with something like Blazing Saddles, where the ridiculous story and jokes are just constant, this is more like a vehicle for a bunch of funny people to be funny.

One of the absolute greats! He basically roasts himself better than anybody else ever could.

I saw him do like a 50 minute set in Vegas and it was joke after joke the whole time. 100's of jokes, unbelievable.

Johnny Carson didn't like Rodney at first because of something Rodney said in a performance. But over time, Carson decided to allow him to perform on his show. The response was so positive that he asked him back and the rest of history. Some of the best guest appearance on the show.

I always wonder when people say they've never heard of Rodney Dangerfield, I wonder how such a big and famous comedian and TV/movie celebrity can be missed by these people.

Rodney is the best. Truly the "King" of the one liners. I am a child of the '60's and '70's. If he was going to be on The Tonight Show you were in for a late night. The best was seeing Johnny Carson's reaction to Rodney's routine!

Rodney was one of two people who could make me laugh. I'm not easily amused, but Rodney and Joan Rivers could always make me laugh. My sister lived in a tiny Texas town called Daingerfield. It was once a thriving little town back in the day. They had an iconic old movie theater there that was about to be torn down, and Rodney showed up to try to save it. They had a parade for him, gave him a key to the town, and named a street after him. He donated to try to keep the old movie theater from being demolished. He was a great guy. I read that when he was in the hospital dying, every single comedian in the industry , took time to go and see him, sit with him, and tell him jokes even though he was in a coma. He was never alone for a second, according to his wife. They all sat with him in sessions, so someone was always there to talk to him and try to bring him out of his coma. He was loved.

Rodney was known as the king of timing and he was the idol of many stand-up comedians who grew greatly successful and his club dangerfields was a great place for them to start. He would walk up and down the street in a bathrobe and didn't care, people would drive by honking the horns going hey Rodney.. but he was a true performer and just had such good timing that every joke would build on another with a very fast tempo and then bam on to another set

Rodney Dangerfield was one of the greats, the king of one-liners. I can understand your confusion about the movie clip. Back then on talk shows, instead of showing the movie trailer, they'd show a scene featuring the guest. There was a separate trailer that showed in theaters and had all the trailery stuff. Caddyshack is fire; you should see it. That IS Johnny Carson behind the desk. He's a funny guy in his own right. Great reaction.

Johnny Carson was a master at just sitting back and allowing his guests to run with it when they were on a roll like Dangerfield is here. JC was also very willing to make himself look bad to make his guests look good and to allow them to get the laughs. Dangerfield's trademark was the "I don't get no respect" line. He also made MANY jokes about his wife which in today's world of uptight feminists lurking around every curve would not be allowed. He made lots of jokes about his wife but he also made lots of jokes about himself and he constantly put himself down. He was one of the funniest men around and never once did he have to resort to cheap sexual comments or vulgar language. He was just funny! I'm glad you had a chance to check him out. Oh BTW, yes, he was excellent at roasts and in fact they had a lot of roasts back in the day and Dangerfield was quite often one of the people who were there to help "roast" whoever. He was great!

This was back in the day, a simple time, there could be more focus on your craft without the technological distractions, you could smoke in a McDonald’s. he was a master of his craft, probably the best comedian this world will ever know

Thank you so much for this reaction! I grew up with this guy in the 70's and 80's and he was the farthest thing from being racist. Same thing with Don Rickles. He would always close out his show with a story about being on a ship in WW2. And it was along the line of saying that when those men were in the shit...no matter their race, color or creed..they were all in it together! Thanks again for this!

Back then, sometimes they played trailers, but most of the time they just brought a good clip from the film. Also, this interview was from 1980. I think it was sometime in September, but Johnny Carson switched his show from 90 minutes to 60 minutes.

Saw this episode on 1st run with my grandad who was a huge fan of both men. Rodney was the master. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.

Rodney had a great comedy club , Dangerfield’s, broke in a lot of famous comedians today. Polo, he has a classic Brooklyn accent. You’d get a kick out of his movie, Back to School.

Around this time there was a TV commercial for E.F. Hutton, with the tag line "When E.F. Hutton speaks, people listen." The ads featured large crowds being completely silent. New York sidewalks and such, I think.

If you like Dangerfield, you should definitely check out some Don Rickles. Jimmy Kimmel did a fantastic service to the public by making Don a regular guest and he was ripping liners into his 90s before he passed. He was hanging with Sinatra and the Rat Pack around Vegas in the 60s.

A lot of people bought comedy albums in the late 60s and the 70s. Flip Wilson, Steve Martin and Redd Foxx to name a few. But my favorites were by Bill Cosby. Two of his best routines, The Dentist and Bifocals can be found on RU-vid.

I used to love listening to comedy records when I was a kid. My brothers and I would memorize the jokes to tell them to other people. We had so much fun back then....memory lane...lol. Rodney dabbled in drugs for a while...coke and liquor mainly... he went with the flow of the 70's.

In Disney's animated movie Aladdin, the genie does an impression of him. It happens fast but it just shows how culturally relevant his comedy was up until his passing.

You're 100% right, Family Guy had multiple tributes to Rodney over the years. Seth admitted to being a huge fan of his. Another point you hit on was how his voice seemed perfect for animation. He actually did a little something called Rover Dangerfield back in the day where he played the part of a dog. Around this time he also not only co-starred in Caddyshack but also had a starring role in a fantastic film called Back to School. Johnny Carson, the host of The Tonight Show in this video, was a comedy legend himself whether it was his Tonight Show monologues, his stand-up or his comedy skits with guests. Oh, and if you want to check out some fun comedy albums Bob Newhart's Button-down Mind series and Bill Dana's Jose Jiminez series are definitely fun but definitely not PC and definitely couldn't be made today lol. The Bob Rivers parody song albums are fun too.

The first comedy album for me...was a Cosby album. We laughed so hard! George Carlin was the other album...lol. My Grandma had lots of albums.... The Chipmunks.....Comedians...etc Rodney Dangerfield was hilarious! In the movie "Caddyshack" they cut out a lot just keep his one liners! lol. They didnt do trailers like they do now. A true master of his craft. To say he didn't get any respect at all, isn't true. But he was greater than they gave him credit for. Comedians knew EXACTLY how phenomenal he was, but the public only knew so much. He was revered and even venerated. On the set of Caddyshack, all the other comedians gathered to watch HIS scenes being filmed. ALL OF THEM. He was the comedian's comedian.

What you saw was not a trailer. It was referred to as a "clip." Stars would go on talk shows and promote their movies, bringing with them a clip featuring primarily them in a particular scene.

Outside of his own accomplishments--which were numerous--Rodney is also remembered for being the guy who essentially launched Sam Kinison's career. Sam's six minutes on Rodney's standup comedians special catapulted Sam into the A-List literally overnight. In later years, Sam would champion edgy young comedians because that's exactly what Rodney did for him.

The first comedy album I ever had and I would recommend higher than any other if you have never had a comedy album.. it's called...a place for my stuff, but George Carlin. He does little commercials in between his little skits of stand up and it's great. My parents would come home on the rare occasions when their friends from out of town would come over and they'd go and have a few cocktails and when they get back they always ask me to play that record, and I wasn't close with my dad and he passed away and I still remember him laughing to those albums and I'll never forget it

yes, check out Caddyshack. It's one of the greatest comedy films ever. also yes Rodney has done a couple animated movies and has been on the Simpsons as well and yes he's a heavily impersonated person, even the Genie in Alladin did a version of him.. Talk shows don't do trailers, they show scenes with the guest in them.

This must have been from The Johnny Carson Show in abot 1978 or 79, because that's when the movie "Caddyshack," came out. Little did anyone know at the time, how Big that movie would become. It's considered in the top 5 all time greatest comedy movies ever made. Everyone has seen it at least 3 times if your over 50 yrs old. Find it and watch it. You'll laugh all the way through thee movie. A true classic.

There’s a documentary out there somewhere on Rodney. Maybe one of those ‘True Hollywood’ things. But if my recall is correct, it said something like he was a vacuum cleaner salesman, door to door. Over the years, he just wrote all these jokes and memorized them. Over the years, before he had an pressure to create new material, he just amassed this vast catalogue of content (again, writing these jokes and putting them in a suitcase). Then, by the time he was “discovered,” he had all these jokes stashed away … Seems like I remember them saying that he battled Depression & self-doubt, and also that he was genuinely a very nice, down-to-earth guy; at least by Hollywood standards.

I remember doing a bit of his stand up as a kid in elementary school. Watched a VHS of his stand up on repeat to memorize his mannerisms.

For those who don't know, guests on the Carson show promoting a movie typically brought a clip rather than a complete trailer. And it's a bit funny that none of them ever seemed to know what scene the clip was going to be.

Talking about voice over potential, he gave voice to a dog, in the movie Rover Dangerfield, hilarious.

He did voice an animation movie where he plays a dog version of himself. Rover Dangerfield or something. They got his expressions perfect, even for being a dog. The eyes are dead on.

Caddyshack- this was not "trailer" but a film clip from the movie...there is a difference...a trailer is specifically designed to promote the new film with different quickie clips, an announcer ]talking it up, and sometimes music to sell the movie to the public. A clip is featuring just part of a scene the actor [Rodney] is in...to promote the film on a talk show.

what you referred to as a trailer was actually a clip from the movie as they said...The last movie I remember seeing Rodney Dangerfield in was Adam Sandler's "Little Nicky" as the devils father...he was a great comedian, and a great actor...As for the 555-1212 joke, it has since been changed to 411, but I think 555-1212 still works for information.

Caddyshack is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen, Rodney killed it. He did several other movies as well, he was hysterical in all of them. His hbo specials were solid gold funny as well.

When people in movies are guests on a show to promote the movie, they show a clip from the movie that the guest is in, not a ‘trailer’, which is more of a vehicle for promotion shown on t.v. commercials, RU-vid, or in theaters. Comedy albums is how a lot of us got got into the comedians back in the day. Cats like Cosby, Pryor, Red Foxx, George Garlin, put out many albums back then. It was a way to hear them raw before we were old enough to get into clubs. Carson (you think this is?), was like the frickin Holy Grail for comedians, like a rite of passage. You should check Eddie Murthy’s 1st appearance on the tonight show wit Carson, as well as other appearances on the show as he became a bigger celebrity. You also gotta hear Eddie talk about when he 1st met Rodney. He tells the story on a zoom interview wit Jimmy Fallon. There was also a rap record called Rappin Rodney 😂.
