I've been learning English since 2019. Reading and listening in English is easy for me, but I struggle with writing and speaking skills. So I set a goal for 2024 to increase my vocabulary and practice speaking and writing. There is also a goal for another language, Chinese. I really yearn to understand this beautiful language, but the journey to fluency just scared hell out of me. So many characters, I don't know if I can remember them all. This language is so different from English or Russian that I don't know what I need to do right away. Oh well, I guess I have to start learning this language from scratch. Practice makes perfect, you know.

For Chinese, you can practice reading with the help of Google Translate.. it will give you the pronunciation and a fairly good translation.

I really recommend people to volunteer at nursing homes! It is a goldmine for language learners ….. I met someone from the Faroe Islands and she is teaching me Faroese ….and I also met someone from Sweden who knows Elfdalian(?)! ….you can save SO much money from not having to spend on private tutors as some of these languages can be super pricey to learn like Norwegian. Not only that….you can also learn super rare languages with no resources. can’t wait to see what other languages I will be able to learn 😊

Thanks for the tips, Tim! I moved to the US last year and I struggle with English, especially listening and speaking skills. I will try to adapt your tips to my 2024 as New Year resolutions. By the way, I am originally from Turkey and my native language is Turkish. I would like to be a language exchange partner with you, if you want.

I really appreciate applying project management planning to our activity, even of just a hobby we need some structure to advance. Somilar idea to learning to play an instrument. If qe just sit down and randomly play we may even progress a bit, but certainly not as much as if we have an idea on what to work on for any given session.

is it possible to learn two thirds of a language by learning an other, for instance uzabkstini and khazstani language or tagalog and Malaysian. I believe language cognates would be a good topic to discuss in your channel. best wishes

Have you thought about making a video on recommended gateway languages into the language families? Examples: Turkish for Turkic family. Indonesian or Tagalog for Austronesian family. Spanish or French for Romance family. Russian for Slavic family. English or German for Germanic family. Arabic for the Semitic family. Hindi for Indic family. and so on. I know there has to be considerations such as ease/ difficulty levels, resources, personal interest/ usefulness/ practicality, closeness to one's native language, etc...
@polyglotdreams
@polyglotdreams 5 месяцев назад
Yes... this coming Saturday, I will publish a video like that for Slavic languages.
@alanguages
@alanguages 5 месяцев назад
Maybe it can be some sort of series? Gateway to language families. Excited to see how it comes about. In my case for Slavic there are more Ukrainians in the Canadian province I am in. It would make more sense to learn Ukrainian, despite Russian having more commercial resources. That is one consideration. Where a person lives.@@polyglotdreams

Great video ❤. I want to ask you, can you start learning a new language by starting with words first then albhabet or other way around?
@polyglotdreams
@polyglotdreams 5 месяцев назад
Yes you can! But it is most effective to learn to read from the beginning... except for Japanese and Chinese.

50 years of learning languages is incredible! How old are you? I have this uncertainty that I won't be as good as you at learning languages and learning languages simultaneously since I'm starting to learn languages in my 20s. I think you've started before your 20s and that may have gave you an advantage than if you had started in your 20s

I am 67, and at age 18, I only spoke English and Spanish. This video tells how I started. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XVZttnbPD2A.htmlsi=X3MQmbeSk9AAFJ3o

Do you think there would have been a difference if you had started in your 20s instead of 18? I will watch your video and give it a comment too. That's a good plan for 2024! Hope your channel grows at least 2x in 2024@@polyglotdreams
