🍺Thanks MLF BPT pro Matt Stefan. I personally don’t add any soft plastic trailers or blades to my crankbaits but I ALWAYS change out my O rings and treble hooks.🤠
Uh oh looks like you got spammed with bots man. It starts with this and it ends with them messaging your subs that they’re you & that they need personal info because the hypothetical subscriber “wOn tHe gIvEaWaY”
I have used feathered trebles on some crank baits for 4or5 years. One other hack I have used is suspend strips on crank baits not to get them deeper but so they suspend that works real good around standing timber. Thanks for sharing Matt
Interesting tip! I have a lot of luck on a little (Rapala) suspending crankbait during cold temps - I modify it as with other jerkbaits - never thought of doing that to other crankbaits - for some reason not as many crankbaits are sold as "suspending" crankbaits
Great tips, I have used hybrid VMC bladed treble hooks and they do work great (especially when I go walleye fishing). I have also bought feather treble hooks and used them to modify top water poppers that don’t have a feather hook but I never used feathers on crankbaits nor soft plastics. Great new tips - thanks for sharing! Merry Christmas!
I can't remember the name of the company , however back in early 70s there was a flat sided crankbait that came with a small worm attached to the back of the crankbait . My grandfather sold them in his hardware store .
Matt what you do and share with us is much appreciated! Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas and that you all have a safe and healthy holiday season brother!
Thanks for some fantastic tips. About the blades. Do you connect them splitring-swivel-splitring to have the blade spinning, or just a splitring and have it just clonking against the hook? It"s hard to see in the video how it"s connected. Merry Christmas, and thank you for a great year of videos! Looking forward to see if there is a propeller bite on lake okeechobee in the spring again👍 (Pardon my broken English, I'm from Sweden😊)
I connect the blade directly to a split ring, then attach the split ring directly to the hook hanger of the plug. The blade will tap against the rear hook if you attach the blade at the rear hook hanger of the plug, or the blade will tap against the body of the plug if you hang the blade from the front hook hanger. Always above the hook on which ever hanger you attach the blade to. By the way, your english is just fine. (Scandi/American here) Good luck!
Matt, thank you so much! I’ve been tempted to modify my baits like you describe. I seldom catch anything, if ever on drop shot. Just my bad luck with hard baits. Starting now, no hold barred. I will experiment with different presentations with confidence. If you have time to respond, is the piece to hold the plastic worm available at TW? Merry Christmas to your family and you.
Well Matt, if you are crazy for doing this then join the club. As a fly tyer since 1969, I have been adding dressed trebles and singles to my spoons and home brew spinners since I started tying. They positively hammer trout and salmon of all species as well as black bass and stripers, even aggressive crappies. I add both feathered/flash trebles and singles to all manner of plugs as well. I have used worm ends and soft plastic minnow ends on my plugs, both cranks and straight swimmers like rapalas and rebels for many years, especially for stripers, sort of like a swimming plug/hair-raiser combo lure. I have not rigged a boot tail yet. I will be trying that for the land-locked stripers at the lake next week to see how it competes with what I already use on them when they go into a feeding frenzy and boil on schools of shad. Thanks for all the info that you provide for us fellow anglers. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
So before I saw this video, I actually did something similar yesterday while fishing for lake trout. The bite was really slow so I cut up a small strip of shad filet and attached it to the back treble. Added a bunch more movement to it and scented the water.
I've been using bladed trebles by VMC for a couple years now- I usually put them on the front of the bait hoping it will tempt the bass to strike that front hook- which means a better hook up to land ratio. Sometimes I think it has gotten me bites that I wouldn't have otherwise gotten but- I can't prove that. I ahve prioven to myself that I land more fish this way though- it does seem to encourage them to bite that front hook. I'm definitely going to try the paddle tail and straight tail worm thing though- never thought about that but it looks very interesting. You could do it with a short, fat, wake bait and you'd basically have a small rat. Or you could put one of those tails from the Sprinker Frog on the back and make a little buzz wake. Merry Xmas man- and a happy new year- hope you and your family have a good one.
I always downsize my hooks. I've recently started switching out some of the tail hooks with feathered or red trebles. Never thought about adding soft plastics before! Thanks!
I have used feathered trebles on crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters and wake. Also tried the red hook switch. One of my favorite baits is the Rapala X-Rap.
I have put a trick worm on the back of a wake bait a lot but the last two years I’ve been trying the blade thing on the crank baits and jerk baits. I think it works better on the crank baits not so much jerk baits
If I want to take away some of the vibration of a blade bait I cut the last inch of a fluke off and attach it with an owner screw lock. Kinda like the mega bass dyna response that has hair on the back.
These are some great tips and I have done the same with some of my topwater lures with adding a feathered treble hook, it seems like the little stuff makes a big difference!! Merry Christmas to you and your family Matt!!
I have used a feather on the back, but have not used a small blade or attached a piece of plastic on them. i have used a small blade on jerkbaits to get a little extra flash
Matt: As I watched this video the following thoughts went through my head. “ So simple, so smart, why haven’t I heard of this before? Why didn’t I think of this?” Just started watching your channel, but it’s becoming a big favorite. New and useful information. Thank you! God Bless!
