In this video, I will be casually going about my Saturday welding off my welding truck. Which is one of my favorite things to do. We will be repairing a little sucker rod (also known as cold roll) fence down at the farm. I'll also be sharing what welding rod I use in this situation. It's nice to just enjoy some low-key farm welding from time to time. I hope you enjoy the video.

It's easier to practice good welds on work that doesn't need it than trying to learn good welding skills on work that counts.

Personally I always like 6011 on rusty steel, much easier to start on rusty metal and the Flux burns through paint or rust better in my opinion. 7018 is definitely stronger but needs a cleaner surface.

In my experiences, when welding iron that has been downhole for any length of time, particularly sucker rod, it is beneficial to preheat. It takes a few moments but the result is far less cracking. From what i have been taught, sucker rod is high in tensile strength but is brittle. Preheat tends to help mitigate this. I try to go 3" on either side of the weld to about 6-800°. It takes just a moment with a rosebud, but has all but eliminated cracks for me even when saddling on production pipe. Just my .02 on what has worked for me.

A buddy of mine and I built a couple of 40x40 sucker rod horse pens about 25 years ago. We lasered the holes post to post , then slid the rod through. Ran a full bead around the rod. It turned out good. The only draw back, is if cattle hit and bend them, it’s harder to replace.

I used golf hats for welding for over 30 years. Usually keeps the sparks out of my ears and off of my beautiful hair 😆 I used both bottles laying down but valve end up on a 4 x4 so inclined up. I learned the hard way never let the valve end be inclined down. The oxygen ruptured the regulator and blew the hose like a bomb. I had the bottles on a truck with a 4 x 4 tilting them up but the truck was tilted. And I didn't really notice. Not big on laying them down any more.

Acetylene tanks have acetone in them that is soaked in the mat material inside the tank. With it being laid down and being used the liquid acetone can come up the hose, through the tip and blow up. Fron what Ive heard.

7018 as apposed 6010 The first 2 numbers refer to tensile strength 7018 is stronger it also has more ductility and less prone to cracking because of a more refined grain structure (low hydrogen). It is always good to do more than one pass as each pass refines the former passes grain structure and pulls out hydrogen and is less prone to cracking . It is good also to have your rod metal a higher tensile strength than your parent metal . Welding higher carbon and high tensile drill stem One would be advised to weld with 11018

@SkillIssueShynes

Glad to see even you can stick a rod every now and then! 😂 For the new welders in chat, 6010 is 10000 lbs/ sq in weaker than 7018. The first 2 digits of the 4 number rod designation refers to the tenisle straemgth of a weld made in perfect conditions. 6010 is a fast-freeze rod. It works best is open-root situations. 7018 is a fill-feeeze rod, it's better for fill and hot pass on open root welds.

@charliehcrew1957

Acetylene is dissolved in asatone and the tank has to be upright long enough for the liquid to flow back down or you can have problems with two different flammable substances at once and it will damage the regulators.

In my experience 6010/11 is a fast freeze rod and will penetrate and can be welded in all positions, 7018 is cleaner higher tensile strength and can be welded in all positions but does not penetrate as well

So way back in 1985 when I was in Vo-Tech they they called 6010 a fast freeze rod that was prone to cracking if it had to flex much. Then 7018 has what they called ductility. That allows it to move without breaking might be why it works better. You talked about down hilling 7018. all through Vo-Tech I was always, always told to only weld hill with 7018 never ever downhill. Then on first full time welding job after VoTech I was sent to a school for one week up in Lincoln, Nebraska to become a certified National Crane installer / repair welder for them. So the very first weld they had us do to install the crane sub frame to a truck was a 3/4” multi pass DOWN HILL fillet weld. The thing is we had to welding 3/4” thick steel plates to the 1/4” subframe. Then you would bolt the 3/4” plate to the truck frame. I alway that that was funny. Sorry for being so long when did with my story

Austin, why do you preheat the whole area on that sucker rod when you are going to burn it? I only do a spot to start the cut and on round stock I frequent make the preheat flame slightly oxidizing to start the cut sooner. Also, you know DOT rules you cant transport those welding gas cylinders without either the cap on or a DOT approved safety collar to protect the valve.

Most shop and plant jobs are single hand where you’ll be paid an hourly rate and maybe per diem as for tools some to most will be provided but you may have to bring some of your own like a hood, tig rig, etc. As for pipeline and other rig jobs you’ll be paid straight time which is a high hourly rate or split check that is hourly, a per diem, and rig rent. You’ll need a welding rig with all your tools like a welder, leads, grinders, extension cords, oxy acetylene torch, levels, squares, beveling machines, jack stands, etc. Hope this helps

@@TexasRedneck I would say yes, it’s gonna be slow, flux core doesn’t deposit metal as fast as stick or solid mig. And a small machine like that is going to hit duty cycle easy, if you don’t give it time to cool. but if you’re only building fence for yourself (aka going slow isn’t costly for the customer) I’d say you can do it. run uphill so the heat helps with penetration, and go for it. I'm not Austin but I'll give you an answer based on 50 yrs experience plus a shop course at Oklahoma State in Ag Engineering Dept. I routinely both transport and use any high pressure cylinder in any convenient position. This is because there is only gas inside. This includes oxygen, nitrogen, argon,and we even purchased plain air when I worked for Learjet. Acetylene, my grandfather, father, and myself since 1973 would transport in any position but only use in the vertical position. It needs to be vertical for "a while" before use. One thing I see Austin doing that could get him jammed up with the Feds is you can't LEGALLY transport a welding gas cylinder with the safety cap not attached. There is a "collar" that you can buy to protect your regulator that does make it legal to leave your regulator connected. I nearly forgot. CO2 and propane both have to be standing when used because both cylinders contain liquified gas.
