Trying a Horton STOL Kit on a Cessna 150

Today I am trying out a Horton STOL kit on a Cessna 150. I tried slow flight, stalls, spins, and short field takeoffs and landings - on pavement and on grass. Nothing phases this awesome kit as I could not even stall the aircraft at 38 miles per hour! If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to let me know down below.

Back in 1977, I had a Robinson STOL kit installed on my T210. It gave me an increase in speed, but the cherries were that I could hang with most 150's. Coming in to land, I could cross the fence at 65 and squeak the wheels at 55. I could get it off the ground at gross weight in less than 300 feet...nose it over and build some speed, then go. This is pretty cool. I havent flown a 150 in 25 years, but I am positive I could jump in with no issues. That puppy looks like it would be fun.

FunFifties are wonderful lill planes! Try 1.3 × stall on std approaches , 1.2 × on (short) final. + add the gusting component. Takes a bit to find the break speeds for each flap setting , but once all worked out -it all works! & a 150 Can go around from full flap on the 0-200 climb (69 in dia) prop. Full power , push yoke to counter balloon n be accelerating to at least best climb angle speed as flaps selected for 30° , repeat for 20° , then 10 n on, trimming too. It all happens as fast as described. That type of exercise is great preparation training eng out on takeoff/ climbout in twins!

It is absolutely possible, this is America! You can do anything you really want to do. Another avenue you might look into is the civil air patrols. They can use young people as spotters on flights while the pilot is flying the plane. You would be looking for crashed airplanes or missing hikers etc. basically, surround your self in aviation. Go to a small plane repair shop at your local airport and introduce your self, ask for a job doing anything they need. People appreciate a young person showing initiative.

Thanks for the video! I own a similar Cessna 150H, and I’ve considered a Horton STOL kit as well as pulling out the vacuum system. I fly in the Pacific Northwest where many airports are surrounded by tall trees. I’m less concerned about making short landings, and more focused on being able to safely clear trees on takeoff from a short runway. Did you notice any positives/negatives from the STOL kit on takeoff and climb? Does the kit significantly improve angle/rate of climb? Also, do you have any perspective on going without the vacuum pump and swapping out the old school DG and attitude indicator to the modern setup in that plane? Sorry for all the questions, but my plane is so similar that I’d love your take. I also just discovered your channel and will definitely be checking out all your flying videos! Thanks again!
@MOTOBLADE

On takeoffs I noticed I shorter distance before wheels up, climb out was about 650 feet a minute, versus the 500 foot rate in the other 150. Both 150s I fly have had the vacuum system replaced with garmin G5 glass. I like it a lot, particularly for the compass gyro so I do not have to keep compensating for magnetic north variation - it does it automatically for you based on your location via gps. Hope that helps. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. I will have more flying videos soon. Thanks for watching!

My dad had a couple of 150s at each end of his ownership 'career', always off of grass strips, always took off with 10° of Flap and often using soft/short field techniques etc. the lift with 10° of Flap always out performed any drag.
