Great video again n again, thanks for sharing. 10:36 Lemon grass = Serai, 10:43 Curry leaves = Daun Kari, for masak (cooking) not "massage", 10:55 Petai = stinky bean, 12:18 Jering = Nettle, Do come back to Malaysia. Your contents as a whole are unique... unlike most RU-vidrs'.
11:49 pansoh means 竹筒饭... haha~ very interesting to watch how you communicated with the locals, this makes me wonder how my grandpa communicated with the locals when he first came to nanyang...
I suddenly saw my husband in this video @ 14:30 (the guy with dark shirt) asking if "you are from Korea?" 😊😊😊 I myself is a Chinese but taken care by a Malay. family since baby. 😊 Hope you really enjoy your stay in Kuching Sarawak.
The tropical weather in Malaysia one of the reason why our fruits taste delicious. Also the soils that rich with substances for trees to grow. Here in Borneo Island you can find the tallest tropical tree in the world located at Maliau Basin, Sabah (formerly known as North Borneo). Both Sabah & Sarawak have the most indigenous & ethnic groups in Malaysia. 28 indigenous group found in Sarawak, and about 43 ethnic groups found in Sabah. Malaysia in a Muslim country, but the majority of people living in East (Borneo) Malaysia are Christians. And every year both states celebrating their harvest festival. Kaamatan Harvest Festival is celebrated in Sabah on the 30th & 31st May, Gawai Harvest Festival celebrated in Sarawak on the 1st & 2nd June every year.
@@littlechineseeverywhere There will always next time. As you can see, each states in Malaysia has its own charms. The islands and highland in Sabah will be waiting for you.
Wow Yan! This is amazing. I remember meeting you in Iran a couple of months ago, when you just started you channel and had about 12 views on your videos. Great to see you have travelled so far! And i see that thousands of people are enjoying following you. Have a great trip!

Hi welcome to my hometown. The pink flower is called ginger torch. The last greyish fruit is a cousin of the the stinky beans. They are called jengkol beans. Those cakes are called kek(cake) lapis(layered) our iconic Sarawak cakes. The round snack is called penyiaram..its made with flour, rice flour and palm sugar. You should try our famous kolo mee, Sarawak laksa, Kueh Chap to name a few. If you want to know more about Sarawak culture, you should visit our Sarawak Culture Museum which is the biggest museum in Malaysia and the 2nd biggest in South East Asia.
Actually, a lot of the tropical fruits are also found in Yunnan and Hainan, far from Anhui. China is also very diverse and full of pleasant surprises, even to Chinese.
The red turtle is a dessert known as “angku” with green bean paste. During a baby full- moon, if the parents gifted you with a red round angku, they have a boy. If a girl, then it is the same red turtle you were eating. That “looks so strange” is a vegetable. That “flower/fern” is midin or pucuk paku or fiddlehead fern. That “black snail’ is balitung. “Long gall” is curry leaves. The lemang (coconut glutinous rice) which uncle gave you to try is popular during Hari Raya Puasa. The bamboo shoots which the girl told you is for cooking chicken is also use for grilling lemang over an open fire. Both ketupat and lemang are eaten with rendang. That Mexican hat is piping hot. Glad you tried the various food at the market.
You dont need to describe, she original from China, all chinese food and stuff you knoe from kiching or MLaysia or even everywhere else related in Chinese she knows more than you haha, thats why she call it red turtle because originally from china lol, i feel embarrassed... come on 😂😂😂
@@ukchub6633she is from Anhui, she may not have been to Guangdong or Fujian. With the vastness of China, she couldn't have known all the Chinese local dishes.
It is anazing that you went to Sarawak and even tried durian. You are more educated on S.E. Asia than 99.99% of Chinese in China who are not interested in ethnic Chinese people living outside China. You did an excellent job. What is sad is that most Chinese in China are not interested in ethnic Chinese living in other parts of Asia. I have watched other travel videos of yours too. Good job!
That big banana is called plantain or cooking banana. As the name implies, you cannot eat it raw. It tastes a bit tart. Usually we cut it into 1cm thick slices without peeling the skin and steam for 3 to 5 minutes. Another way of cooking is to pan fry this pisang tanduk slices on banana leaf.
I feel so homesick at the same time happy to see you enjoying my former hometown as I have migrated to Australia . I have not been home over 2 years now because of covid but I am going back in May next year . Thank you for the presentation
The fern is called "midin". It's really delicious stir-fried with garlic or with belacan (shrimp paste). Can also be made into a pickled salad with shallots and chilli.
The green fruit with sparely blunt spike is called sour sop The fruit is sweet with some sour taste. According to health magazine sour sop has extremely high anti oxidant & claimed to be a cancer cells killer
Hi Yan, you should visit the northern part of Sarawak too. The prehistoric Niah cave in Niah National Park where the birds nest are harvested by climbing bamboo poles. Then the Mulu National Park, where you find one of the biggest caves in the world. One of the wonders of the world. Cheers
10:37 - yes she's tying up the lemongrass in bundles. 10:45 - curry leaves, used for cooking curry and add aroma to some dishes eg. butter prawns, oatmeal prawns/chicken, salted egg seafood/chicken
Oh my goodness! I just started following your channel and what a truly stunning surprise to find that you visited my hometown of Kuching fairly recently. Thank you again for your wonderfully presented vlog like all your other vlogs!
We Sarwakian welcome you to visiting our country in the near future please come again love you and your video ❤ thanks for coming and visiting our country Sarawak
Sorry for what happened to your mouth. I hope you enjoy the local food of my country Malaysia. Have a nice trips and stay safe. Greetings from Singapore
they chop the chicken into small pieces and put it inside the bamboo. add a bit of salt and pepper. seal the bamboo with some edible leaves and cook over a slow charcoal fire for up to one hour. Then pour out chicken with soup and leaves. Eat everything and enjoy.
Haha...you always only buy 1 piece of what you want to try 😂 I think some of the sellers just oblige you. Anyway, I enjoy watching your videos. Love your style of relaxed presentation.
Borneo has many exotic fruits because they preserve their jungles. we call the durian like thorny fruit 'guyabano' here in the philipines. it is sour and sweet. the round jackfruit like fruit, we call it 'marang' . it is very sweet hehe. for the breadfruit, we cook it thendip it with a coconut sugar candy(syrup) because the taste a little bland but filling to eat because you can eat it with big bites
When eating tropical fruits, try to avoid touching their skins. Remove them if you can before feeding them into your mouth. Those skins have liquids that may burn your lips or mouth. I would not consider that as allergic though.
Hi Yan, understand you are near your hometown (Anhui)...very happy for you to be back home soon. That you are able to achieved your schedule (to be back home by mid Nov. '22). Meantime, looking forward to more videos from you. Stay safe and healthy. From 🇲🇾
Good to see you visited East M'sia...fascinating region. I'm not going to lie...though been to Sabah and Sarawak a few times (from KL)..I've never tried many fruits that you've tried in Satok Market. Embarassed to admit but true. Again, good content. Looking forward to your next video. Travel Safe.

👍Wow. Never knew there were so many exotic fruits. But, yes, too, your surprise allegy reminds us that something often goes wrong in such experimental situations, as a kind of trade-off payment for satisfying our curiousity. 👍
Due to the hot weather, plus lots sweet, doughy snakes, not enough water, fresh fruits-veg causes skin rashes , pimples when not used to it. Some fruits there r considered ‘heaty’
I was literally just about to say I would love to try the food, but I’m terrified of having an allergic reaction and then I saw the end of your video. I have a slight soy allergy, I get itchy rashes and I bet there’s definitely some vegetable or fruit there that’s 100 times more allergic for me than soy haha, the food looks good though 😅😂
In Sarawak, English also our official language beside of bahasa Melayu. Each races or ethnic in Sarawak we have our own language for example Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau and many more.
Wow, new subscriber. I didn't think I would find this video very interesting but it was great! I haven't seen any of these things before apart from the steamed buns because we have an Asian supermarket in the city centre in Nottingham UK. I like the custard ones!😄
Oh, you call ANG KU KUEH Turtles!! I love them!! The ones with Mung Beans filling. Ha ha, Turtles! I have never thought of them that way, but they do look like Turtle backs.
