A few tips for those spirits; Minttu is really good with chocolate milk (as someone mentioned already), heat it up. Koskenkorva is best freezer cold and/or with a bit of water. Valhalla is quite new, it came out a few years ago and is basically the Finnish version of Jägermeister, best ice cold. And last, Salmari you just have to get over with, straight up shot, don't leave time for tasting. Happy hangovers!

You should never drink salmiakkikossu when it's warm/room-temperature it only tastes good when its properly chilled and same usually goes with other Finnish hard stuff :D

So it's pretty much tie with Finns on do they drink those as a mix or on their own. But if you do want to try them in mixes I'd recommend Minttu with hot chocolate (one of the best winter drinks ever!), most often you can hear people ordering kossuvissy so mix Koskenkorva with some sparkling water and 1-2 wedges of lime, Valhalla is pretty much always drinked as a shot but Salmiakki (more often preferred as Salmari) you can mix with energy drink and cranberry juice (taste is similar as Punainen kala candys).

And here I am, thinking that the only drinkable one is Salmiakki (and Valhalla), since it hides the vodka taste the best. And yes, you usually drink these as is. Valhalla is basically a knock off of Jägermeister and is a bit more herb-ier than the Jäger. I do like all of these, but somehow Salmiakki stays down the best if you're drinking it more than a couple of shots during an evening of drinking. It's not as sharp so you won't instantly feel ill if you take a shot of it while near your limit (i.e. hammered near your "passing out" limit). So... Koskenkorva & the rest are a starter shot along the rest and Salmiakki is more of a sustainer during the later parts. At least for me it is.

Minttu is realy good to mix with choclate milk! And Salmiakki was actually in the early days made by mixing regulat koskenkorva with the candy "tyrkish peber"

Koskenkorva tastes best consumed at munanlämpösenä. aka. little bit above room temperature. Or if you fancy a tasty treat then try it with little bit of sugar and dollop of cool water.

Buy bag of Turkish peppers and bottle of Koskenkorva. Take a gulp (1/4) out of Koskenkorva pour turkish peppers in the bottle. Close the bottle tight. Put the bottle in the dishwasher and choose normal program. After dishwasher is done you have nice bottle of "SALMIAKKIKOSSUA". Let it cool down and enjoy. At least one restaurant I know made it like this and sold it as Salmiakki koskenkorva.

I recommend Blueberry Koskenkorva, it would be the next spirit, which you should taste !!!! And also if no one has told you, you should try Minttu and Jägermeister ! It is shot 2 cl Minttu and 2 cl Jägermeister ! Shot is called in many ways, but in my town it's called "Niskalaukas" in english "Neckshot"

Salmiakki KK used to be so popular (among teens, especially girls) that they had to ban it for a while in the 90's. Straight up, unchilled.

There is one drink that you could make from Salmiakkikossu (Salmari). Punainenkala (Red fish) - Class(0,33L) half full of Ice cubes. - Pour 5cl Salmari in it. - Then fill rest of the class with Red colored Energy drink like ED redberry or Rodeo Name comes from Punainen kala candy, because they taste same.

You should try Kyrö Napue Gin also

Minttu is very good when you mix it with hot chocolate. I guess that's how most people drink it, because otherwise it tastes (as you said) just like mouthwash. Koskenkorva is just a regular not-so-good vodka and I only use it to make drinks. I don't know too much about Valhalla but I believe it's supposed to be cold, like Jägermeister. Finally, Salmiakki koskenkorva (aka Salmari). Personally, I like to drink it straight from the bottle but since you obviously didn't, I suggest you try it in a Punainen kala (Red fish) drink. Take a glass, add some ice cubes, 2 cl of salmiakki, 2 cl of vodka (maybe Koskenkorva?) and fill the rest of the glass with energy drink. (Maybe 20 cl or so.) It tastes like the red fish candies made by bonbon.

Half a litre of Salmari is actually my absolute favorite if I just want one bottle for the preparty. Doesn't matter if it's ice cold or piss warm, goes down like water all day!

Minttu used to be .50-cal for a long time and as far as I know, it's supposed to be taken as shots chilled ice cold.. Koskenkorva is basically just vodka with a touch of sugar added during the distillation process.. Gives the nasty sensation you get under your ears and the back of your tongue followed by the afterburner trying to lift up the 'elevator' and makes you saliva like a hound dog.. :D I dare you to try Jaloviina or "Jallu" as it's known.. It's the same for Alko as Dacapo is for Fazer.. Just a blend and a mix of alcohol producing leftovers.. Tastes just like industrially produced moonshine.. Which it is actually.. :D

Valhalla - Huh, you've never had Jägermeister before? Because that stuff is pretty much a direct copy of Jäger. Salmari - Wrong, it's 100% awesome! :D Next time you gotta do your own, though. 0.5l bottle of booze + 1 bag of Tyrkisk Peber candies (ground up).

On your comment about Salmare, you are quite close, I work in a bar where we make our own shots. We make Salmare with Turkin Pippuri and vodka (not Koskenkorva though), let the liquorice dissolve in the spirit and bottle it after a few days.

Minttu mixed with chocolate milk (hot or cold) has turned out to be the favourite drink among my american friends, so i recommend you try that!

-Koskenkorva vodka is actually quite nice straight, it's tame, balanced, easy. -Minttu works OK as an appetizer shot I guess, ignites your digestion for a healthy meal and opens up your airways, wakes you up! -Valhalla I haven't tasted but it sounds a bit like Jägermeister or Fernet-Branca, both of which work fine as appetizers. -Salmiakki-Koskenkorva, I see the appeal but I personally don't like these "flavoured liquors" anymore, used to drink alot of this when I was a teenager but these days I just prefer a proper whisky or a fine cognac.

check out Minttu Black....best sipping alcohol. I drink maby once a year or less. but this is something awsome and i sometimes enjoy some. you can just sip the whole bottle at a one run . You just need to take really really small sips, the smaller the better just more often and after few hours you suddenly wake up that the bottle is empty.

When you said aitoa suomalaista viinaa it was pretty much spot on! And btw koskenkorva isn't vodka. They added some sugar in to it so it can't be called vodka.

You should try salmiakki koskenkorva aka salmari with either battery energy drink, or if you find "rodeo" (its red colored energy drink in 0,5litre bottle). 4cl salmiakki koskenkorva with 10cl energy drink of your choice, (battery or rodeo)

you need to try "hot and sour", it contains colourful turkish peber melted in a little bit water mixed with koskenkorva, it's really good. =)

A tip for the Minttu, pour some in a blender with chocolate and vanilla ice-cream, add som milk or cream and you'll have the best milkshake ever...

6:55 fun fact: that's actually how people make salmiakkikossu. Buy regular koskenkorva and add salmiakki, or tyrkisk peber (turkin pippuri). One cool way is to buy the colored tyrkisk peber bags and get different colors for different bottles. Ask any locals how to do this and make a video out of it :D

Salmiakki koskenkorva is actually made originally (i dont know if they do it nowadays that way) by dissolving salmiakki candies in koskenkorva :D

About mixing Minttu with something, as the bottle says it's pretty much as it is, but there's a at least this shot with many names but I like to call it Känniankka. Or in english, a drunk duck. Pour 2 cl of Minttu on the bottom of the shot glass, and on top of it a separate 2 cl layer of Jägermeister. It's pretty easy to build, especially if you use a teaspoon. Oh, and the drinks _must_ be ice cold. Try that.
