Jaloviina, or cut brandy, is basically brandy and straight clear booze mixed together. The number of stars represent the mixing ratio, one star is 1/3 brandy, and 3 stars is 3/4 brandy. It's really versatile as far as a base for drinks as you can basically mix anything with it and it'll be okay. Coke is fine, energy drink is good, orange juice is also good, sprite is fine, even plain sparkling water is nice if you don't want an overly sweet cocktail.

If you are going to make 3rd one of these, taste some Gambina. We call it katkero, and it has pretty much become a meme in finnish metal community, you see it all the time during metalfestivals. It's a red drink what is sold in a pretty big plastic bottle.

Jaloviina is a wartime classic, that's probably why it's so popular. On Mannerheim's 75th birthday in June 1942 a decilitre (if I remember correctly) of cut brandy or actual cut cognac was given to each soldier on the front. There's a scene in The Unknown Soldier where the guys not only down the cut brandy, but get drunk as hell on kilju as well. Sadly I hear that scene was cut from the international edition of the latest film, because foreigners "wouldn't get it". If you haven't already, go visit the beer store Pien behind Ateneum and ask for something Finnish.

Hi, Try this: Smash a bag of fruit-Turkinpippuri to 0,5lVodka(take some on vodka out befor adding candy) Put the mix in fridge over night and turn it over couple of times so it mix well. It is sooooo gooooood! (So sorry my english :/ )

Jaloviina, also known as Jallu, consists of spirits (viina) and brandy. Amount of stars in the bottle tells the mixing ratio. Best ways to consume is ice cold snaps from ice cold glasses before/after meal, in cooking (marination and sauces) and of course "jallukola" which is a mix you can order from any bar or make at home (Jaloviina and Coke/Pepsi).

If you approach Jaloviina like a brandy and sip it from a proper glass slowly, it's much more fun. As a "cut brandy" it's a cheaper substitute for real brandy or cognac. Also the taste of the brandy component is more prominent if you drink it closer to room tempereature. Of course it can also be mixed with any drink and all foods. A process called "jalostaminen".
