The original meaning of hiisi is a sacred grove. Then came those Cristian priest and told us not not have those "bag pagan rituals". So, the meaning changed. The Estonians still have the original meaning. Hiidenmaa/Hiiumaa is "holy grove land".

Oh now you've stumbled on to a gold mine for taste test tuesdays. The finnish craft beer scene is actually quite big. You should try some sour ales. The king of finnish craft sour ales is CoolHead brewery, they have beers like "Salted licorice raspberry sour ale" and such, you can find them in a craft beer shop called "Pien" in Helsinki.

The word hiisi, in it's original context meant a holy place and sometimes a place of burial, for the ancient Finnic people. It is only later it was used for various mythological creatures. The word in no way refers to the devil. A Finnish word more suitable for that, would be Perkele, though even that was originally more like a Zeus type of god of thunder and lightning. The word Perkele was adopted by the Church in Finland to mean the devil, since in the process of converting people to Christianity, it is common to take parts of the original culture and existing religions, and merely give them new meanings. This includes various paganic traditions, even ones like Christmas and Easter. This abuse of familiarity makes the process of converting people to the new religion easier.

Oh yes, the most professional tasting so far by you. The way to go. Also that Jyväskylä city based Panimoyhtiö Hiisi definitely is one of the most brilliant breweries in Finland so far in general. A couple of other ones to mention (for a start) include: Stadin Panimo Tornion panimo, Panimo Honkavuori (specially their Belgian style ale called Carelian Blonde, and their porters), and Fat Lizzard.

Finally a beer tasting video! Oh how I've been waiting! Loved it! Please do another one with some alko beers aswell! 🍺😍.. afterall the higher the abv the better the taste 😉

Just got extremely impressed when you said "Panimo yhtiö Oy" your pronunciation is getting lit these days. Hiisi is a pagan expression for devil. In finnish we've got many different expressions for devil such as saatana, perkele, piru, hiisi etc.

You should make Teerenpeli taste test video :) Beer, cider and whisky. (Their whisky is super good! Almost scotch level)

You should come and taste some beers at my workplace Olutravintola Pikkulintu! (It's been voted the best beer restaurant in Finland a couple of times AND the best whiskey restaurant with over 400 whiskeys!) I could give some seriously good beers and a tasting session. And if you liked that Hiisi Brut IPA and the Piirimyyjä that much, I could make your taste buds happy with some beers we have :D

These taste tests are always interesting, especially the ones about alcohol products... I've noticed that the older I get and the more beer I drink, the more I like just good quality pure basic lager. No need for those roasted nuts here either :D

Yes Legenda (Legend) is one of those "cheap" (as cheap as you can get in Finland anyway) beers. The hiisi translation was a little bit off. It's more like demon than devil. It's pretty common misconception thou. THE Devil is a christian thing. We used to have a spirit for pretty much everything untill they came

13:35 hiidenkirnu (Giant's kettle) is something that always comes into my mind when I hear "hiisi". we have a lot of those in Finland. fun fact; it has nothing to do with hiisi, but it's interesting nevertheless

Yay, Hiisi represents! This one is from my friends in here, Jyväskylä, Central Finland. They have all kinds of brews from juicy sours to dark roasted imperial stouts. Highly recommended. Glad you liked Nuri!

Hiisi beers are my favorite currently from Finnish beers.

Velkopopovický Kozel Svetly was my favorite beer (the almost white bottle/can). Wasn't that much of a beer drinker, so that was one of the few I actually liked the taste of. So try that if you haven't, very light stuff :)

You should try other Mustan Virran Panimo beers. One of those was that Suomi olut. There is also at least: St. Olaf beer (pale ale), Pässi (ipa), Neito (golden ale), Pistolekors (porter). All made in Savonlinna 🏰 and my friend is one of beer makers in that company!

You should also try Tornion Panimo beers and maybe even the new gin they made.

You should try more of Hiisi beers, they're quite expensive but surely the best special beers we have in Finland.

I was told when I went to the Heineken Museum in Amsterdam that beer should be tasted with big sipps, so all the different tastebud senses give you a combined taste sensation. You should try to see if you can taste the difference between big and small sipps of beer. I know I did :)

Almost everything from Pyynikin Panimo should be tasted (my favorites are cloudberry saison and melon milkshake IPA). For sour beer Coolhead brewery is really good. Also Fat Lizard makes very good beers (especially their Gose, Salty Beach)

Try Auran Sinappi Tosi tulinen (another great mustard brand from Finland) and Saarioinen einespizza (roiskeläppä)

You should try Pyynikin Brewing Company's (Pyynikin Käsityöläispanimo) beers Mango Watermelon Milkshake Sessio IPA, Cloudberry Saison, Ruby Jazz Ale and/or Mosaic Lager

I'd guess the Nuri tastes a lot like an IPA tastes, very distinct taste in those. Being "brut" might bring the taste of hop even more dominating. I like IPA's (can only drink the gluten free ones sadly), but one is enough. So good, but that taste of hop is so strong in those that... well one is enough =D . And a little background for that Piirimyyjä, Ruosniemen Panimo is in Pori where the Karhu beer was originally made. I was able to drink regular beers back then and Karhu was by far my favourite, really strong taste (Koff being second). But when Sinebrychoff closed down Porin Olut (brewery in Pori) I, like many others, "protested" by not buying those anymore. I've never been drinking much so it really had no effect on them of course, but that brewery was a big part of my then hometown's identity, pride even. So, "traditional west coast taste" probably points in the direction of those strong roots of brewery in Pori. And as many have said you could make yourself quite a quest on tasting all of the craft beers in Finland, there are more of them even in Pori and I think more are coming all over Finland all the time. Your liver might protest that quest though =P.

You should try something from some better breweries like CoolHead, ETKO, Olarin Panimo, Tuju or Salama Brewing. Only decent brewery here was Hiisi unfortunately, and they have seriously started slipping in quality. Oh and use a clean glass next time ✌

Since you liked Nuri so much, you should absolutely try Jumi which is also by Hiisi, its main difference is higher alcohol content so you can only find it from Alko.

I recently tried "Sonnisaari -Synkkä Aasi" which was 7,0%. It's probably the darkest bear ever😂 it was so bad imo that I really really struggled to drink the whole bottle😅 You've GOTTA try it tho🤔

I haven't tried all the Stallhagens but I think they are very hit and miss. The honey one is the best and the Wild Flower is pretty OK. Their "Original" ale is terrible and the "Delikat" isn't very delicious at all.. The "Ale Mary" is aimed at the Swedish market where you can only sell beers up to 3.5% ABV in grocery stores. Most of the beers in this category ("folköl") are pretty tasteless but the Ale Mary is pretty good for what it is IMO.

You know it somehow feels so Anglo-Saxon of you to get so easily drunk... :) Just a few harmless beers on a hot day and you are quite wasted :)
