Wow Dave, you are truly starting to nail those Finnish words! You still got that British accent there, hopefully it never wears off, it's cute :) Foods and drinks you should try: -Joulutorttu -Glögi -Panda suklaakonvehtirasia (literally a box filled with chocolate. It's a classic xmaspresent that people give to each other :)) - All the "Laatikot" you liked, but with raisins - Many christmas-theamed chocolates made by Fazer (Kat may know, jouluomena, joulusuklaa etc.) ... Well there's some things that pop into my head when I think about xmas :) (Edit: Hopefully I got all the typos away...)

Homemade porkkanalaatikko is amazing, way better than the one you get from the stores. I love all the Christmas food except lipeäkala. As for desserts, taatelikakku is great.

Someone already suggested this but I would also like to see you try the Finnish Christmas chocolate boxes ☺ for example Panda and Fazer. They have many different flavours to choose from. And you MUST try Fazer's Wiener Nougat boxed chocolate! Thanks and bye 😄

Joulukinkku is the best

Dave, try tumma limppu with joulukinkku and pickles and mustard. Such a heavenly combo.

My christmas favourite foods are Joulukinku,porkkanalaatikko,glögi of course and lot of more.

Joulukinkku! Definitely joulukinkku is my favorite, in my home it's cooked inside a ryecrust in the old masonry oven. The smell that wafts in the early morning hours is just mindblowing...we used to wake up and have a little ham feast in small hours.. And the crust that soaked up all the flavors is just heaven! You guys missed the beetroot salad! Rosolli in finnish, and it's served with pink whipped cream (unsugared whipped cream colored with beetroot juice). That you should definitely try!

Indeed the ham is the Finnish "replacement" for turkey. And as you said about in UK there being a lot of leftover turkey for sandwiches and other stuff, we also get a lot of leftover ham which is put into pea soup (along with the bones of the ham). This is why pea soup after christmas is simply divine.

Best way to eat joulukinkku is with sinappi and karjalanpiirakka. You should try!

I am Finnish..registered in Finland. My mother is from Vantaa Finland. My favorite Finnish Christmas foods are Date cake, liver caserole, rice and raisin casserole, the gingerbread cookies. Brings me memories of my mummu. My aunt makes a potato caserole for christmas where the potatoes are fermented outside for a few hours. An old Finnish recipe. Oh so tasty. In my Christmas Table I always have vintage Christmas tablecloths that I inherited from my mummu from the 50s after the war. Finnish Christmas food is an acquired taste, to me its part of my roots so it brings fond memories. Hyvää ruokaa.

My favourite is allways that karelian stew with huge chunks of pork and beef. That mixed with potatoes and fresh mushroom salad is the one thing that binds that christmas dinner together.

Maybe you should try ohrapuuro (barley porridge, older but nowadays less popular alternative to rice porridge) if you have a chance. And ideally you should have a cream/soup (fool? Idk a good translation but kiisseli in Finnish) made from mixed dried fruits or raisins to go with it.

Personally don't really like a lot of Christmas foods because reasons. I however have some that should try because Tradition and some because they're Good. -rosolli (cubes of cut up vegetables and even some fruit, my family loves it) -joulutorttu (the star shaped "pastries"(?) with either plum or apple filling) -kuivakakku (dry cakes, there's a wide variety of these, related to the puolukka-version you tried here - my favourites are cognac cake and so called tiger cake) -glögi (a warm drink with or without alcohol, add almond slices or raisins for extra feels) -mäti with smetana (fish eggs, personally I'm crossed out but hey, some people like it) -joululimppu (Christmas bread, it's kinda sweet) -actual graavilohi or the vegan version - just want a non-vegan opinion on those and they were a Thing a year or two ago (I think you might have tried gravlax at one point??) -I think you might have tried riisipuuro (rice porridge) before but if you did so without cinnamon and sugar you're a heathen -reindeer in any form - this is not a traditional Christmas food in the south at least, but if you've got small children as guests then their expressions are h i l a r i o u s - plus reindeer's delicious

Every year, for a week after christmas, I'm eating potato cassarole? and christmas ham.. I mean perunalaatikkoa ja joulukinkkua. Nothing else, only those and I'm loving it.. That's what makes it the best time of the year.

I love that you reply to your comments! You should try the ”real” joulukinkku which is a big piece of ham and you cut slices from it. The one you ate looks like the already sliced store bought package version, and I think they taste completely different! The real joulukinkku is so so much better 😍

My favorite is ham with boiled potatoes and home-made karelian pastries with egg-butter on top. My mom makes killer karelian pastries with both rise and potato filling. Also salmon, mariated and smoked, that's so good.

Pity that christmas is only once in a year, because i kinda love christmas foods more than anything. Especially homemade 'imelletty perunalaatikko' and of course joulukinkku, properly made to little bit more like pulled pork. Happy christmas, Dave. Love watching your videos.

Hello Dave. Awesome Christmas dinner. I miss all that fish so so much. Perunalaatikko & maksalaatikko are my favorite one. I don't care the others. I also would say no thanks for the Lipeakala. I have never heard eating gingerbread & blue cheese together before. I am surprised there was no riisipuuro & rusina keittoa for dessert. I am glad you guys had a wonderful trip ! :) Thanks

You forgot rosolli! It's a cold salad that's made of potatoes, carrots, beatroots (and sometimes some pickles). Basically you cook all the ingredients, let them cool down, chop them all into little tiny cubes, mix em up and serve with some whipped sour cream (or just sour cream).

I really liked this video, polite, positive but honest. You just got a new subscriber! These foods are rooted in Finnish culture very deeply. There is always someone who skips the "lanttulaatikko" or some other dishes. "joulutorttu" is the dessert I would recommend!

My favourite is more common on the swedish christmas table but it's amazing! It's called Jannsons frestelse and it's made with potatoes, onions, cream togheter with fillets of anchovy baked in the oven.Thanks for a great channel! You should visit Åland (Ahvenanmaa) sometime .

My absolute favorite finnish xmas food is this wipped cream thats mixed with beetroot. Its delicious.

I love smoked salmon and swede casserole and carrot casserole. The ham is delicious the next day when it is cold and you put it on a slice of joululimppu. 👌

Dave, you should also try the bluecheeze piparikakku mix with a piece of pear on top. It REALLY makes it pop!

I always eat loads and loads of lanttu- and porkkanalaatikko at the side of Karjalanpaisti with potatoes, it's the best thing in my Christmas

Homemade Swede Casserole and ROSOLLI!😍😍

I love rosolli! Salad with pickled beets, gherkins, onion, carrot!

My husband was Finnish and the traditional Jul dessert when he was a kid was a rice pudding with an almond baked into it that was supposed to mean that you would either get married the following year or have good fortune. He usually got it but would always hide it in someone else's pudding!

Haha I love your reactions! Quite similar to mine. I just moved to my finnish boyfriend last summer and just spent my first chirstmas there aswell and i really like most of the foods too! Though the bluecheese cookie combo disturbs me still on a deep level

Imelletty perunalaatikko is the best along with the joulukinkku! Nothing, I mean NOTHING, can beat them.

You should try christmas ham with the smashed potato thing (perunalaatikko), it's my favourite combination

Karelian pastries made in dough containing ALOT of rye, baked to crispy perfection in a wooden oven. Those paired with leftover christmas-ham = D-vine.

The reason why lipeäkala is so rubbery and jellyish is because it's basically fish dissolved in lye! (And ofc washed time and time again afterwards so it's not poisonous when eaten :D)

Karjalanpaisti is hands down the best. It's not strictly a christmas food per say, but atleast in my family we always have it in the christmas table.

ROSOLLI and porkkanalaatikko are my favorites.

Your finnish spelling is improving so fast! 👏 My favourites are the ham with mustard plus the casseroles. I also love the mushroom-salad and rice-porridge with sugar and cinnamon - or, even better - SEKAHEDELMÄSOPPA (have actually no idea how to translate it 😂)

each part of finland have little bit different foods on christmas table, for exemble different boxes or different way of making rosolli. At ours we have lanttulaatikko, porkkanalaatikko, maksalaatikko, makaronilaatikko and perunalaatikko. In rosolli we have onion, apple, beetroot, carrot and salted cucumber. At our table we don't have fish at all.

My favourite christmas food is a secret recipe in my family, but it's mainly mashed corn. Sounds odd but it's even better than mashed potato casserole!

My weird christmas food (and probably my favourite food combination ever): Carelian pot with peas and pineapple, plus some rutabaga casserole on the side. If I'm feeling particularly monsterous I will mix it all together. Believe it or not, it's delicious, try it!

My fav christmas food is rice porridge :D And i love eating just raisins and almonds/peanuts together XD

Also one way of eating lipeäkala (lutefisk) is sprinkling some salt and then pouring some melted butter on top. I usually do one half of the fish that way and the other half with white sauce.

We always have also karelian stew, boiled eggs, smoked salmon, mushroomsalad, home made mustard and rice pudding. with all those what u ate :) And u have to make ham sandwiches with this bread called "piimälimppu" or "limppu" an mustard

I would like to see when you make Finnish Christmas meals. Perunalaatikko, lanttulaatikko, porkkanalaatikko and then kinkku in rye crust (ruiskuoressa paistettu). Then there is rosolli, italian(potato)salad and mushroomsalad. Make you own mustard, there is competive who is making it so "hot" that you have tiers when you eat it. We known that you can smoke salmon so thats easy. Deserts taatelikakku, joulutortut luumuhillolla and lots of suklaakonvehteja :)

I love bataattilaatikko (sweet potatoe? casserole), and I'm horrified that I haven't seen it on the stores yet. That with some joulukinkku and mustard... You should also try sekametelisoppa (mixed fruits soup), which is best being still warm and served with cream or riisipuuro 😉

Not sure if it's a traditional Christmas food for others, but my dad's been making smoked salmon for as long as I can remember. It's not just my favorite Christmas food, it's a top contender for my favorite thing to eat in general.
