I'm into alternative fashion so this generational style stuff doesn't really apply to me either. I feel like in this community everyone just kind of followers their own trends outside of what is going on in mainstream and then of course some people just swim against the stream just for fun and that's more than welcomed too. I'm a millennial 100%. Since I'm from the late 80s, I think what throws me off about Gen Z styling is that a lot of it feels like its inspired in styles considered uncool in the 80s and 90s like the preppy tennis skirt and sweatshirt combo or the mom jeans and tucked shirts. But I have to give it to Gen Z for looking a heck of a lot more comfortable than we did!

It's so hard to compare those styles because it's basically comparing teens to women in their late 20's....you look younger in the gen z outfits because that's what the kids are wearing and you look older and more mature in the millennial outfits. Also some gen z styles look very "dress up" to me and the millennial styles were more about comfort and speaks volumes to what the mindsets of the millennial generation is. Soooo interesting, but I definitely gravitate more towards the gen z outfits now-a-days just because they feel more unisex. Even your body language changed between the styles!

The strange thing about the generational fashion discussion is that it doesn’t represent the reality. As millenials we wore clothes that were inspired by popstars and fashionicons that were actually most likely to be boomers. The same goes for gen-z, they were inspired by influencers/icons that are sometimes millenials…. The divide isn’t that clear i think :)
@RedBloopCreature

What also occurs to me is just a touch of classism. I feel like a lot of fashion trends and photos online are geared toward those who can afford to keep up with them. For every Instagram poser on the bleeding edge of trends, there’s kids who just have low key clothes, as it’s always been.

Tbh thredUP is still up charging items you can easily find at a thrift store by like 3X. They are(and other companies) a huge reason why thrift stores have all increased their prices. I hate it, but it can be convenient if you’re looking for something very specific.
@Zoffi95
@Zoffi95 2 года назад
I feel like thredup can charge more because of their filtering features and because they do seem to have bigger brands more accessible and in good condition. I'm sure you can find a lot of nice things at a thrift store (I used to go all the time and would find absolute gems), but it's kind of like going to a thrift store with a curated selection or a personal shopper. That would cost you more irl too. I agree that thredup is a lil pricey for second hand clothes still and I can't speak on thrift stores raising prices, but I can also understand why thredup charges more for their service. So, yeah, I agree with you for the most part. 😁
@annw7843
@annw7843 2 года назад
ThredUp is more of a consignment shop than a thrift store. Because consignment shops pay out to the people who provide them clothing, they’ve always been more expensive than thrift shops which usually depend on donations. It’s a completely different financial model than say, goodwill. Consignment shops have existed for just as long as traditional thrift stores (if not longer). The changing price in thrift stores is a combination of inflation and corporate greed. No reason to blame these things on ThredUp.

I actually like their pieces because to me they still seem reasonable but I get what you are saying, here the thrift stores have become so over priced that sometimes it is just cheaper to buy new which is such a shame because charities like the cancer society or the council for the blind then don't profit items just sit there and people who always steadily bought items each week and made the shops a good few thousands in profit no longer come back. I saw a very basic Karen Millen designer dress in the thrift store couple of days ago for 1.5K and it nearly blew my socks off. Absolutely crazy it was nothing special except some crazy person online probably put a totally unattainable price on it and now they check everything online and many shops with their "always start pricing high policy and mark items down in a couple of months" make the shops go under and often items are then just binned by the thrift store as a result. Totally crazy.

I wonder if the kids still like licentious literature like lolita. zellenials or whatever they call themselves seem to like a lot of stuff from 1996-1997 and think they invented it like Clinique Black Honey. come on, your mom and Liv Tyler made it the success it is so it wouldn't be discontinued and your thin mouth would find it when you came "of age" to wear Almost Lipstick, little dorks.

I also preferred her in the millennial skirt. I loved a pleated schoolgirl style as a teen (I was born in 1985), but the circle skirt seems to be more flattering. There are a lot of things coming out that are because of Gen-Z and it brings me back to high school, but they style it differently than I would wear. Also can we please get back true low rise pants, never got on board for skinnies nor high rise. Give me my low rise bootcut. I don't want jeans up to my boobs and I want to be able to bend my knees, skinnies just don't fit me right and I feel like I lose my shape in a high rise.

I hate the concept of cheugy and I don't really like the battle of the generations thing because sometimes I feel like it's just more women hating on other women's choices. Like calling a girl a basic bitch in 2012 is the same vibe as cheugy now. And that is something I really would like to see go out of fashion, lol. This could all be because I am a very unstylish and sensitive millennial, of course. Though I'll be happy if the pleated skirts being on trend means they'll finally show up in plus sizes now.

Like 1997 all over again. This jeans are everything. Yay for wide legs being back. Airforce are VERY 90s too. These kids acting like millennials don't know. 😂 Also keep in mind that most Gen z people are super young. So the way they dress is super teeny. tbh, a lot of millennials, myself included, gave up on skinny jeans when leggings became trendy. I was in high school when leggings started to trend (that was 10 years ago), though at that time many people wore long tops to cover their butts (and then eventually we stopped caring about that, ha!). I was super against leggings at first because to me they were too revealing (what a prude i was!). But once I wore them in college and they were so comfy, i didnt care and they became a staple in my wardrobe since xD Personally, none of her millennial outfits except for the skirt one described what i would wear as a millennial myself, but I think my fashion sense may be somewhat influenced by gen z as well, just because you see a lot of that on social media.

I'd love to see more plus size sample photos when you're describing fashion trends! Especially if you tagged other plus size influencers ☺️

Interesting topic. On a personal note I cannot tuck in a shirt, it’s uncomfortable and I hate that it highlights the post baby tummy pooch. The whole time I’m wanting to untuck the shirts lol. But that’s just me I suppose.

I'm not one for tucking in jumpers and shirts either, anything too constrictive around my tummy just pees me off!!😆

I love the square pockets! I stumbled across a pair like that at Old Navy on the clearance rack and fell in love, but haven't been able to find another pair like it ever since!

Zennials!! The inbetween group from the early to late 90s had a pretty different experience from the millenials before the 90s and gen z after the 90s.

Seeing as the Gen Z folks are only beginning their adult life and millennials are already well into their adult life ('91 millennial here), the millennial looks all seem more professional/grown up to me. The casual look doesn't quite stick with this, but the other ones, definitely. The casual look seems more like: millennial is comfy time and Gen Z is trying to kinda/sorta dress up.

I agree! I love the look of a far amount of the gen z styles but whenever I try them on I feel 16 again.

I feel like even the casual look looks more grown up because it doesn't show that much skin or doesn't put focus on body shape and size, which I feel like comes with age too...
