Mayan blues are a more "natural" pigment (the original Mayan blue was a mix of natural plant based dyes and a type of clay) so its more prone to granulation and binder separation. If pigments are heavier than the binder, they'll split and to make these paints a liquid consistency you normally have to use more binder (basically they're less soluble). This happens more with watercolors made from minerals. Normally these types of colors aren't great a layering because they're pigment load isn't super high + they lift pretty easily (Terre Vert/Green Earth is a common example). For your type of style you'd probably prefer synthetic pigments that are much more saturated and smooth (they're easier to grind, so there isn't as many big pigment particles = no granulation). This includes things like Pthalo and any pigment with chemistry names (Dioxazine Purple, Azo Yellow etc.)

Yup, all of this. There are some exceptions but most natural pigments aren’t as strong in color payoff as synthetic. For example, if you look at Daniel smiths primatek line, you’ll see a lot of them aren’t as saturated as their standard line. There are some exceptions, and natural pigments do tend to have more texture to them overall. I have several Mayan colors from both Stoneground and Beam paints, and they are gorgeous in seascapes because of their texture/granulation.
@zara4leafclover
@zara4leafclover 3 года назад
@@allthecolorsinmyhead I didn't want to make my original comment too long but there are always exceptions xD. PBr7 and PY43 are great example. Both are natural pigments coming from clays, but they normally are much easier to grind and are more saturated. But like all pigments they can vary brand to brand. And PBr7 especially can have a wide range of hues because of heat treatment (raw sienna, brunt sienna, raw umber, brunt umber etc.). Some can have slight granulation and other not. PY43 can vary as well in terms of where the clay came from. I love the Daniel Smith Primateks and like any mineral color they're saturation varies greatly mineral to mineral. Green apatite and Sodalite are quite pigmented and saturated but other can be quite weak and dull. Even just between one paint it can vary. Amethyst for example can have a fine shimmer to it while other people can get a tube without any sparkle etc.

Thanks so much for the information! It's good to know that this is just the nature of this pigment - I'll just have to play around with it more and get used to it's properties Haha you definitely hit the nail on the head! I love Pthalo's!

Mayan pigments tend to have a particular texture, it's just a property of the pigment. Even Daniel Smiths tubed mayan paints have it.

The Mayan Royal Blue isn't faulty, that's just the pigment I think. The Daniel Smith version of that color (at least I think it is the same if not a closely related pigment) behaves the same way in dried form, which is really frustrating ^^

So I went on a bunny trail looking into Masonite boards when you mentioned yours. I have a small desk with very little workspace so some of the Amazon ones that were 23 x 29 looked awesome with the clips and rubber band to hold down paper. But, most say that since it's wood, it's not recommended with water mediums cause the wood will warp in time. If one's using decent watercolor paper, do you think it should be fine? How has your Mason Board handled painting using watercolors and gouache?

A trick I always hear for taking off the labels when there's stuck is to pop them in the freezer for about five mins and then the label should come off easier. Also would you ever try Beam Paints? Mayan pigments are natural. Like most natural pigments, the have strong granulation and texture and do not have a very saturated pigment load, EVEN with the big brand names. This property would be even more pronounced with HANDMADE watercolors. Because they cannot be mulled as finely.

Instead of having to trace your art, cant you just change the color of your line art in your digital art program and print directly on watercolor paper? I know some colors are more water proof or water resistant then others and some ink brands are better then others and I know you can get waterproof ink for some brands but I found that HPs instant inks are pretty damn waterproof. Mostly the black, but I put up colored stolen posters all over my streets in the summer and used dollar tree glue to saturate the back and pressed it into wood poles. I live in rainy Oregon and I put them up in August 2020. Even after months of heavy rain, they are still readable. The blue of course is the first color to go (after multiplerain storms) and the black is still going strong. This can also work in your favor if you use waterproof inks in your art and soak your printer ink away after the fact. Also, the glue could have played a part in water proofing the ink. I didnt glue the front but back so you can try this technique on the back of your art and glue it to a heavy duty flat surface like glass, wood, metal that's the perfect size for your painting. Summary is: I think you can save time by line arting your digital work in the pink tone you use and printing it directly on watercolor paper or the paper your going to use as long as you make sure that your ink wont interact with the water and if it does. Delute the opacity of the printer ink before printing and use that as a guide to trace over with your oil based pencil. Just a few suggestions.
