Have you tried diving with a full face mask? What did you think of it?
@scubacastor

I have an Aga Divator FFM with OTS comm system installed. For the mask, it's comfortable. I found the 5 first minutes of the dive are not that comfortable because I tend to get a weird wet and warm feeling on my face while breathing some cold air (in cold water). Past that point, it's really nice to use. It's worth mentionning that using those masks requires to be comfy with the idea that if you have to remove your mask underwater, you are removing the regulator at the same time. So it requires some training regarding some safety procedures and may block a fair amount of divers who are reluctant removing their mask underwater. Carrying an extra normal mask in your BC is definitely something to consider as well. I used the comm system a couple of times including when I was following an UW field course on fish behavior for my university studies. For filming I see an advantage for directing some assistants but most of the time I am diving alone when filming and the other time, regular signs works okay for us à 95% (the next 5% are when writing on a slate becomes useful). Talking underwater as you mentionned is harder and stays harder on the long run than normal surface talk therefore it may impact your overal gas consumption. Apart maybe for the UW filming crew with several people or some other professional uses like teaching a class, it looks like the comm systems has never reached most amateurs even photo or video buddies.

All good points that you mention. I consider carrying an extra normal mask with you when diving with a FFM absolutely mandatory. Just for the unlikely event of having a malfunction on your FFM. Yes, I agree, that talking through the comm system underwater is much more difficult than what I imagined. Therefore I don't think that we will be using it a lot, but I'm certain it will come in handy in some situations and save us a lot of time being able to correct or clarify something while being in shooting position and not having to go up to the surface towards each other to write something on a slate. We'll see with time I guess, but I'm quite positive, that we'll make good use of the new masks.

Yes, already have a Ocean Reef Predator and diving in lake Zurich with it ;) I love it but sealing can be frustrating with thick gloves and a 5mm hood. Another drawback is air consumption but experience is a lot better than regular regulators.

What issues have you encountered in regards to sealing and gloves? I just did my first dive in lake Zurich this week (in a dry suit) and didn’t have any issues.

@@MatthiasLebo I’m wearing Waterproof 5/10mm hood and sometimes the forehead doesn’t seal perfectly, so air is escaping from the top. But the main reason for this is, it’s hard to grab the silicone straps with bulky gloves to tighten them. I usually struggle to find the strap ends and grab them with my gloves. Sealing issue doesn’t happen often though, 1 dive out of 5. I absolutely love my full face mask but I rather use it in more temperate climates with significantly less exposure suit

I fell in love with full face mask (FFM) diving last year. As a photographer/videographer, I really appreciate the one feature you didn't mention: no fogging...EVER! The lack of fogging and the wide field of vision are key aspects that affect your sight. For boat diving, you don't need to apply non-fog stuff and rinse it in the boat's sink (less sanitary). I use the OTS Guardian. The regulator is off to the side, so the bubbles are a bit more out of the way than the Ocean Reef. It's detachable from the mask, for easier servicing. I also rigged it with a swivel and quick-connect, so there's less hose resistance when I turn my head, and I can switch to a standard regulator (rigged with same) and use a conventional face mask (in case the OTS regulator malfunctions and I don't want to rig another second-stage hose, or some other reason). Like my FFM instructor, you have facial hair, and the skirts on the Ocean Reef and OTS seal really well, even with beards and mustaches. Another benefit: Because it seals your entire face, the FFM keeps you warmer in cold water diving. Both brands furnish ambient breathing (snorkel) valves that allow breathing fresh air at the surface in order to conserve gas (OTS near the top, Ocean Reef at the bottom, which may be more problematic). Finally, both brands are securely strapped on your head, so they won't get knocked or kicked off your face, like a conventional mask. It's great that you showed your training with the mask. It's very important that all divers with FFMs get certified or at least train to remove and put on these masks underwater, in case there's a problem. If any of your viewers are considering buying a FFM, they should try both brands in a pool with an instructor or dive buddy nearby and confirm that their dive shop is trained in servicing the masks' regulators.

Hi Matthias, now that you’ve had the mask for a while are you still enjoying it as much as you did when you first used it in Egypt?
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo Год назад
Yes, I'm still enjoying it although I'm not using it too much anymore these days. I only use it when diving here in Switzerland. It's too much to carry with me when traveling by airplane and having to watch weight restrictions. I'd rather take more camera stuff with me. 😉

I know I'm a little late to the party, haha. Thank you for posting this video about your initial experience with the OceanReef Neptune III. Now that you've had a little more time with it, and I assume you've been on your Egypt trip with it, do you still like it as much? Also, how do you feel the FFM affects your air consumption? Do you feel that you more/less air than with a conventional mask/regulator setup? Thank you, - Jan
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
No worries mate. 😉 Yeah, I still like the FFM very much. I think it is very comfortable to dive with and being able to communicate with my buddy is priceless in certain situations. I do think I use a little more air compared to using a conventional regulator, but I'm quite good on air, so this isn't really a big issue for me. I would highly recommend the Ocean Reef Neptune III any time!

hey how do you equalize your ears in this I bought one but can't seem to figure out it
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
Didn’t you get a orientation from the dive shop you got the FFM from? Normally you should do a quick course before diving with such a mask as it is quite different to using a normal mask. You use the included nose plugs to block your nostrils in order to equalize.

Yeah, I've noticed that I'm using more air compared to diving with a traditional mask, but the benefits of being able to communicate with my second cameraman underwater make up for that.

Is the communications component made by OceanReef or is it from a third party? Also, have you tried products from OTS?
@MatthiasLebo
@MatthiasLebo 2 года назад
As far as I know it’s made by OceanReef. They sell it as a package. No, this is the first FFM I’ve tried. Never used any products made by OTS. Have you?
@BurhanMuntasser
@BurhanMuntasser 2 года назад
@@MatthiasLebo I have used and sold products from OTS way back when I owned my dive center in NY but not recently. The OTS is more "rugged" made for the military, law enforcement and commercial markets. They have their own u/w communications systems too. I believe that the OTS product line is higher quality and better specs but is more $$ AFAIK.
