Obsidian really starts to shine once you starting adding and customising community plugins and even creating/editing your own small plugins. For example, in my obsidian, i have keyboard shortcuts to automatically make text different colours, highlighted different colours, formatting, size, etc. Really helps visualise long notes at a glance. Also the in-built Latex/math mode is super good and is easily the best math typing experience for math note taking i have experienced (i use the Latex Suite plugin for maths).

Obsidian is similar to notion, evernote or onenote, but your notes are just markdown files in your computer, and it acts like a database for them. It has great plugins like canvas (arrange notes visually), excalidraw (sketch and save svg), leaflet (custom maps), etc. etc. and it's also free.
@felixjohnson3874
@felixjohnson3874 Год назад
1 most of those plugins are just other projects ported to it (for instance excalidraw) 2 no it's not. If you mean free as in cost then sure, but so is basically every other note program and, unlike many of them, obsidian is definitively NOT free as in speech as its closed source. This is a great example of why people hate Vim- so many of the letter-operation associations it uses for commands are at odds with and conflict with everything else on in Linux, macOS, & Windows GUIs, and in every major IDE/editor from Visual Studio (& Code) to Sublime to IntelliJ to Xcode to Eclipse. You either need to rebind the keys for every other app on your computer… or you could just use an editor/IDE that has most key binds the same or similar to other stuff you use. - Longtime macOS user, and still loving how command+key is all the normal macOS binds, while control+key in a text field anywhere in the OS gives you basic the Emacs operations.

Hello. The first thing you need to do is get vim out of your head before working with obsidian. Obsidian is a very good note taking app. It jumps with the links. It has back links. There are options and plugins like crazy. Obsidian creates a vault. All notes are in the vault and is accessible from the system file manager. There are different markdown versions. I don't think vim handles links as obsidian does. You can have a title which is the note name, but you can create your own title. I would have looked at obsidian before doing this video! You video's are pretty good, but this one makes me chat with you to tell you all you need to know, very quickly. In one day you know it back and forth. Very powerful note taking app. The next thing i like is its not on the cloud. I don't do "the cloud" if i can. cheers and good luck! Patrick

Obsidian is great, it’s a pretty plaintext editor, with huge customization options, user addons, responsive devs, easy migration, and you can just ignore whatever the hell that weird graph thing is
@ZombieLincoln666

The graph thing is like the main selling point though and it has a big drawback in that it makes syncing more difficult because the notes are so linked
@Renni-kg6vf

@@ZombieLincoln666yeah, but I don't really care about it, it's a nice md editor with plugins, that's all that really matters to me.

Testing to see if the person knows how to exit vim is so based. That is exactly what I failed to do the first time I haphazardly opened vim.

If I put on an audio book or podcast while I code I will get distracted from the code, or I will just ignore what I'm hearing. So I only code in silence or to music. usualy to music with no voices.

I’m finding Obsidian insanely frustrating to organize. All I want is a Daily Canvas with one note for journal entry, one for tasks, one for workouts, etc.. Organized by date. Worked well for the first month but folders are organized alphabetically and you can’t use the same file name. So now you need some numerical naming system. I’m likely overthinking the file system, but that’s the problem. Look at their blog and suggestions. It insanely complicated. Ffs, I just want to take notes.
@MigzPigz
@MigzPigz Год назад
You can create a template that you can use as your daily note that can have all the sections you want. I know this isn't exactly what you're asking for since it would all be in one file but I think it could still help a bit
@michaeldeane4807
@michaeldeane4807 Год назад
Thanks for the help @@MigzPigz. I tried that originally but my note got really long and I had to scroll up and down too frequently between sections. What I did instead was create a decimal system like: 010 - Canvas (folder to store daily canvas), 020 - Journal (folder for daily journal), 030 - Tasks (folder for daily tasks), etc... Canvas are named by date so there's no duplicates. The rest are label as 020.1 - Journal, 020.2 - Journal, 020.3 - Journal... for each new daily entry. So far so good. I'm thinking of combining this with something like you suggested to reduce the amount of individual notes. But I don't want to overthink this more than necessary. Thanks again.

Best way to use Obsidian is the disable the stupid visual editor and go back to the code editor. Visual editor was a mistake.
