We're trying our Jingmai Gulan cake for the first time after pressing. We use this opportunity to discuss the challenges we met making tea during the Spring 2017 season and share our opinions on tea processing and quality.

I really appreciated this, especially English subtitles with Chinese. I know it's a lot of extra work compared to doing stuff in English but it's really nice to get some exposure to Chinese in a subject you care about. Thank you William and Yubai

Watched it in 2024 :) and was impressed how tea positively impacted on William cause I thought it is fresh video :). After that I released that it was 7 years ago ... but still would like to buy this tea)))

super vidéo ! c'était très sympa de vous entendre parler en chinois. Et le fait que ce soit une conversation ça fait plus naturel :) intéressant ce dont vous avez parlé, le fait de devoir s'adapter au climat chaque année, de choisir de favoriser la sensation en bouche plutôt que le côté aromatique !

It's interesting that you talked about the tea developing fragrance over time, I thought that teas mellow out over time.

Young tea has an original fragrance, but it changes as the tea ages. For the fragrance that appears after aging, people talk about Chen Xiang 陈香, it is very dependent on the storage conditions.

BTW, sipping some of your very nice 2016 Spring Jingmai Gulan Old Gardens right now and look forward to trying your 2017 cakes.I hope they will be available on bannacha as well.

Nice to see you folks and I'm glad you've changed your mind on the sha qing (kill-green) since some of the teas I bought from you (e.g. the Miyun) went downhill after some months, pretty much like any green tea. I guess these days most pu heads are interested in being able to age their sheng pu, and favor somatic experiences like mouthfeel, cha qi, throatiness etc. over fragrance.

Thank you, they'll be available on bannacha in two or three months, you can order them on www.farmer-leaf.com now. I agree that our Miyun and Gulan had a low point during Winter, but i think they taste fine now, the fragrance has changed and is good again, at least under our storage conditions in Puer city.

Excellent video of both of you introducing the new Gulan which I have already ordered on the day you actually posted in the website. Looking forward to taste it as usual. I was also quite impressed with the fluency in which you spoke Chinese (Mandarin I assume). If you carry on processing future teas this way as described here it would be very useful for me to buy some maocha of the same tea as I find in the west maturity of pu'er teas take much longer. Kind regards to all of you in Yunnan.

thanks for the video and all the background information, personal impressions and explanations. i had about the same impressions, but wasn't able to explain them. after this video i'm able to. it would be very nice if you would make a video in the same style for the Spring 2017 Jingmai Tian Xiang, as for me it's the second best tea from FL 2017. btw: The Jinggu Old Gardens from 2016 that i bought last year has aged very good in my opinion and is one of the best teas for me. You had a more expensive Jingmai Spring old tree cake 2-3 years ago i think, that stood out and was one of the best Jingmai teas i ever tried. totally aromatic of honey, spices, wood, flowers.

Hi William - for how long do a puer cake needs to be aged before it can be sold in the market? And how do you store those cakes while aging or is there a specific way to store?

Hi Boilal, pu-erh tea used to be stored five to ten years before being market. Nowadays, higer quality production can be sold on the same year they were made. For storage, you can check a video I made about pu-erh tea aging and storage as well as this informative article: teadb.org/pumidor-survey/
