Got to try out the Stihl MS462C, the biggest, most powerful saw I've ever handled. Here's a quick look at the saw and my observations as a beginner and first-time user.
My equipment:
Helmet: Kask - Superplasma HD
Earmuffs: 3m - Optime 101 Peltor
Gloves: Stihl - Anti-vibration gloves
Pants: Husqvarna
Boots: Viking - Bushwhacker
My saw: Stihl - MS 170
Featured saw: Stihl - MS 462C

Love the shape of the top cover of the 462c!

I got this saw last summer and sold my MS660 and never looked back. This saw is perfect for cutting a ton of firewood. LOVE IT! The 660 was way too heavy for firewood for me and my 362 wasn't strong enough. Then 462 is a great balance of power and weight!

Great comment mate,now I'm interested of buying the 462 but how efficient is the oiler ??? Kindly advise Gunter

I have a 462rcm myself it's that best overall saw I've owned! When you use a decompression valve on a cold saw wait till you've pulled the saw over a couple times with the choke on and then take it off, push the valve in and pull! Itll start right up.

I love my ms462c. I hummed and hahhed for a while before spending the money but I’m glad I did. It has allowed me to increase my production so I now have a few years of seasoned firewood.

Hello from Ohio! That 462 is a beast! Myself I run up CS 7310 p echo chainsaw. I also have a 028 super steel chainsaw, cs590 timber wolf. Small 180 Stihl chainsaw, and the echo cs310. They all have a place in my woodyard! I also have a CS 800 p with a 32-in bar. It also has a place in the woodyard. I also get a lot bigger trees 30 inch and bigger. I love it when I get the small stuff.

If you got a problem to START THIS saw - don´t use it , the problems are in your arms. This beast is a lightweight in 70ccm, you got to control this power.

Try the ms880. If you can get it started and manage the weight the 462 will seem light as a feather.

I just found your channel, good to see your sensible and practical approach to learning to use these saws. Going from the 170 to the 261 to the 462 is quite a jump but a fun comparison. I'd have to take issue with your comments on the toolless caps, I've used them for years and never had a problem. I have a 462 and its a great saw but it is quite heavy (by comparison) and needs more oomph to start and muscle to operate for longer periods, as you found. Keep up the good work and happy cutting!
@TheRealSarahCatherine
@TheRealSarahCatherine 2 года назад
Thank you! I haven't had any real trouble with the toolless caps, but I'm wary because I've seen others with chain oil down their legs because of poorly closed caps. I think the key is just not to rush and make sure they're in properly 😉 Happy cutting to you as well!

Try sitting the saw on the ground and placing one foot in the rear handle and one hand pushing down on the handle bar. Then pull the cord its much easier for me the that way.

@@TheRealSarahCatherine It’s the lightest 70cc class saw there is. Compared to older saws in this class it feels light. You should demo the ms400c next. That saw is more powerful than the 261 and lighter than the 462. 👍🏽

Suggestion on the start; use the weight of the saw and gravity to your advantage. Tension the pull and push down with the saw. I think it will yield positive results.
@markatkinson9963
@markatkinson9963 2 года назад
That is called a drop start. Not recommended as the compression of the saw can stop the recoil from spinning and the bar can pivot up from your hand and kick up into your face. This is not recommended in the owners manual. Best to use the suggested methods.

When Stihl first came out with the plugs I thought cool turns out I like the plugs as much as you and I always have a scrench with me any way for chain tightening. I dont think you may have enough umpfff to pull the 462 over fast enough in order for it to fire. I always run summer weight oil even if it means keeping it in the truck cab during the winter as once in the saw it warms up. Who ever is mentoring you should explain the difference between wood under tension vs compression and why to cut compression first and finish on the tension side. Scrap the 170 and get yourself a 261C already.
@TheRealSarahCatherine
@TheRealSarahCatherine 3 года назад
Yeah, I feel like those plugs are not the miracle of engineering they were meant to be. You're right, I definitely have an umpfff deficiency 😉 I''m starting to get a better handle on tension/compression, but this tree had fallen against another tree causing sideways tension as well, which I wasn't comfortable tackling just yet, especially with a saw I had never handled before. The 261C is my favorite so far, I'm saving my pennies 🙂

@@TheRealSarahCatherine Like the A-Z of the alphabet and a dictionary - Compression comes before Tension. C comes before T. Compression first, Tension last. It matters not if you are felling a tree, cutting a single limb off a truck, bucking a log or delimbing you always work out what forces are at play and then plan based on Compression then Tension. I exhort you to watch the 17 part series on YT about chainsaw training by Worksafe Canada called BC Faller Training Standard. Watch and take notes. You don't have to be a faller or timber worker to watch this videos. You'll learn a lot and you'll be safer and more efficient. It's not just the letters C and T that you need to know. It's also the letter G. Gravity and how this works with C and T. All the best :-)
@dougreid2351
@dougreid2351 Год назад
An ancient woodsman told me to only put three pulls on a Stihl at full choke, and to forget pulling "until it 'coughs' like the manual says." I pull my cord softly until the resistance of the cylinder is strong, let the cord back down, THEN tug quickly, smoothly and as far out as my (short-ish) arm allows. Combined with Stihl Motomix, my saws always start quickly, without flooding. And please tell us again why you insist on starting the saw the way you do instead of on the ground where small stature would be less of an handicap? Thanks. DOUG out

@adelarsen9776 2 года назад
I hope you're well and in good spirits. I look forward to seeing some new videos from your local nature. As for this video, the 462/460/046 is a heavy saw. I use one (460) regularly and even I don't like its heavy weight for extended use. I like the 170 and 261 Pro for constant use in the forest. I am sure that with spirit and enthusiasm you can do anything :-)

Such a bummer, all it takes is a bit of bad luck on a really cold winter day when the plastic gets brittle. The owner considered changing the cover, but he's about to replace the saw anyway as the warranty is expired and this one will become the backup. Thanks for watching!
