Today I finally try to use my colored pencils with drafting film. It's such a different experience than on regular drawing paper. I really enjoyed the result as well as the process.
I have a Skillshare class, the first in a series where I'll be sharing tips and techniques on how to draw with colored pencils on black paper.
If you're interested in taking this class and are not a Skillshare member yet, I'm happy to share with you my referral link, which will give you a free introductory subscription. You will not only be able to take my class, but also thousands of other classes offered there. Have fun!

Saved this video for a day that I hurt too much to paint. Yay! I’m all set when I look at my screen and notice her kitten image looks exactly like my lien that went missing three months ago. But that’s ok, I’ll scroll thru all her videos and find a better one for today.🥰

I've never seen drafting film used with pencils. You are so good at answering almost all the questions that pop into my mind when you share a new medium or technique. I found this fascinating, and your kitten turned out adorable! I look forward to a future tutorial with drafting film. I'd be curious to know what subjects you think it is best suited to e.g. pet/people/house portraits, portraits, florals, landscapes, abstract, surrealism etc.

Great minds think alike!! It was a lot of fun using this paper and I think you can draw anything you like. I'm part of a Facebook group where people share their work on drafting film and they do a variety of subjects. Some do amazing portraits with colored pencils. Some work only with graphite. The fact that you can add colors on both sides is really cool.

Very nice I want to try it too. May I ask what tool are you using on minute 5 mark? Ty.

It's a Slice ceramic knife that I use to lightly scrape off the pencils to add white highlights: amzn.to/3I1gGjY

I only added more and more layers and the pencils blended into each other. No blending tools.

What is the difference with tracing paper? That is very smooth too
@Sandrinesgallery

Drafting film is a polyester film. It's thicker than tracing paper and tear resistant. It feels more plasticky and the pencils lay on it very smoothly since it doesn't have the tooth tracing paper has.

I have heard on other videos, that you can get 8 layers of pencil on Drafting Film. Would that depend on the type of film? Lovely picture.

It depends also on the pencils you use and how much pressure you use. Go light.

Hello Sandrine! Very nice picture! I also work with drafting Film because there is no grain. I hate the structure of paper. But only the graphite pencil brings good photorealistic results. It can be blended with a cotton pad and is erasable. My Polychromos make problems on the film. I don’t get homogen Backgrounds because I gets streaky. When I erase them I can’t draw above the surface, it is „closed“. It is not possible to correct :-( With graphite pencil it is possible, I can erase and layer an. I guess it is because of the oil in the Polychromos. Do you have a tip for me?

Hi Emily, I'm afraid I'm still new to this. I usually use regular paper with my colored pencils. I haven't tried graphite on drafting film either, but I know you can create amazing pieces with it. I'm not sure how to solve your problem. As you can see I didn't draw a background. I heard that Mr. Clean magic eraser (the original one) works very well for erasing colored pencils on drafting film. Also, some artists just use soft pastels like Pan Pastels. If you're on Facebook, there's a group called Artworks on Drafting Film. It's a great source of information. You can ask all the questions you want and admire all the gorgeous art.

Thank you Sandrine. I am not on Facebook and don’t want to sign in... how can I get contact nevertheless? I don’t think that it is because of the rubber, because erasing with graphite works very well. I guess it is because of the binders in oil or wax based pencils which leaves an oily surface, that is closed for drawing over. Sorry I am from Germany, and my English is very bad 😬 How do you store your work? I want to sell it but I can’t send the customer 2 single pieces of paper, the background paper and drawing. He wants to frame it...
