Trying Out the Weller Cordless Soldering Iron

I have multiple Weller soldering irons and they are reliable, dependable and never let me down ... Until now that is. This battery operated device does not work very well at all. There is a small window of solder melting opportunity just as it gets up to temperature but seconds later that has faded away. The instructions advise "only press the button when soldering" but the button cannot be pressed! It only slides.
The positives ... It gets up to operating temperature in just 20 seconds ... It is chunky but not uncomfortable to hold ... The operating light is a pleasant shade of green ... That's about it really.
If you really do want one of these, find it on the Home Depot website by searching for this unique reference number, 317651818.

It works, but you have to switch batteries. Then push it till green goes out. Once ready, push button again so it's blinking red. Once red goes out, you're good to go. You can tin a 45 gauge wire.

I guess that means it sucks and don't open it because I'm wasting money? Thanks

You wait until the light is solid to start. I just purchased one, and it is bad ass! Your video shows operator error. Thank you for showing me how not to be an idiot!!😊 I wish you luck in life lol

Hi Jordan. Does it come with better instructions now, I think they must have improved them somewhat. Can you share a bit more about what you have been using the iron for? A lot of people here would like to know. Oh and thanks for watching and all your good wishes.

Yeah, it's not good for Weller who produce many quality products. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I just bought this without knowing it had AA batteries, what a drag. It made me think, why couldn't i just get a flashlight, and a soldering tip and boom same product for like 10 bucks or less... well it would need a heating element but that's easy to find for free, just take a walk in any city and find a e cig or wax pen laying around in the gutter and take out the little nichrome wire in there I'm pretty sure that could work.
@PicRic
@PicRic Год назад
Sounds like an ingenious solution, Simon. Would it still use AA batteries?

I thought I was doing something wrong. Turns out my only mistake was buying this piece of junk. Will swap it out for a corded one. Thanks for the video

I'm surprised it is still available myself. You are wise to opt for the corded one. Thanks for watching.

I wonder if using it with smaller solder joints would work?

I very much doubt it, Kyle. Choose a different model to get reliable soldering capabilities.

Someone should make a thing for e cig batteries that is a soldering tip, because i have a bunch of those batteries, i even have a fancy mod battery that ive never used, giant thing, but the chip in it won't let it be used unless it has a low ohm coil attached. I wish i knew how to hack it without taking everything apart because it has a nice charging circuit for the 2 batteries and a screen.

Yeah, I don't know who that "Someone" might be though. Until then, maybe stick with corded soldering irons, I have.

Had this for a while, if you can keep fresh batteries in it, it's okay for small projects. I didn't really like it. Have you tried the energizer lithium batteries in it?
@PicRic
@PicRic 2 года назад
No, only the batteries that came with it. I use one of my other soldering irons whenever I have a job to do.
@bleach_drink_me
@bleach_drink_me 2 года назад
@@PicRic if you dig it out maybe try them out. If I still had mine I would test them myself but I can tell you from other devices, the lithium do produce more voltage and last longer.
@PicRic

@@bleach_drink_me I'll make a note on the tool to use Energizer lithium batteries for more power. Thanks.
@simonlinser8286
@simonlinser8286 Год назад
Just put a USB port on it and plug it in before using it, you can recharge the batteries that way it works decently especially if they're fresh batteries. Or you could use the usb power to sort of pre heat it, then unplug it for use to extend the battery life. Or like literally just get a lithium 18650 cell or two in parallel, a heating element and make your own. I think that's what I'm gonna do because i didn't know this was AA. Now i have to go return it, what a waste of time. 4.5w should have been the give away

Thos weller cordless iron is sheets. Never made a single joint with it. Can barely melt solder once with fresh batteries. Can't read the direction it came with. Not that it would matter. No online directions either. 😮. Shoulda bought a Hako
@PicRic
@PicRic 11 месяцев назад
You too, eh? I don't know anything about the "Hako" but I am surprised that this iron is not better now than it was when I first came across it! Thanks for adding to the conversation, E. G.
