Yeah, me too. We have free trade (no import tax) agreement with Russia, but we still don't have Russian snacks. Except for the Alenka chocolates, that thing I've seen in the shops, but I've never tried it.

Филип Брчић Which country are you in?
@brcha
@brcha 8 лет назад
BeatTheBush I'm in Serbia. Of Russian things we have one bank, some kids tv show (Masha and the Bear), occasionally an Alenka chocolate in larger shops, Lada car dealership and, of course, Vodka. I think that covers everything.

Филип Брчић Verrrrry interesting. You know, I had to look a few of those up to know what you're talking about. =D Over here in CA, I never looked but I'm sure there are a few specialty Russian shops somewhere.

The subscription gift boxes for gamer gear, cats and dog treats, and things like this might be an appealing thing for a short amount of time, but I can't imagine people continuing them for a long time. It looks like they put a lot of effort into this and their attention to the details are admirable, but I can't see this being a sustainable business for the long term, unfortunately. Good evaluation.
@BeatTheBush

I guess it depends on the person though. Some people might enjoy a constant stream of snacks, others might want gamer gear. They have this one where they send you high end gadgets and you send it back if you don't want to keep it. This type of product subscription service is a niche but I think there are enough people that want a monthly box to make the business sustainable.

+BeatTheBush I hope you're right. They certainly put the extra effort into it and it's always nice to see people succeed.

I teach journalism at an American university in Tokyo and I have a Russian student, an adult woman who resides in California, to whom I sent this video. I asked her if these snacks make her long for home (homesick) and am waiting for her reply.🤗
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 8 лет назад
The response will be very interesting. Somehow I imagine Russian snacks to have less of a commercial packaging look. It'll be interesting if she longs for that Rot Front candy. Maybe there will be some Russian viewers that comment. =D

BeatTheBush: Here's her response: Thanks. It was fun to watch "I'm not big on snacks and sweets, so this doesn't make me homesick. However, I miss bread a lot. In the States I could bake my own bread, somewhat similar to our traditional rye bread. But in Japan it's not possible. "But no matter how much I miss bread, I'm not going back to Russia. Not to mention, that they no longer have bread of my childhood :)" So, how about Russian bread? 😁🤓👏🏾👏🏾👍🏾👍🏾😋

Ahhhh... yeah Japan does not usually have ovens huh? So no baking Cheesecake Mushipan yourself. I'm not that big on snacks and sweets as well so I totally understand. No idea how to make Russian bread though.=/

Robert Jefferson Thanks! =D Well... I bet you cant cook a 20lb Turkey in a Japanese oven right? Lol. Then again, I guess a Japanese home would not go around feasting on a 20lb Turkey.

@BeatTheBush

Hmmm... seems like I just ate some Russian junk food not to be compared to real food.
@JdMsk
@JdMsk 8 лет назад
Well...It`s a difficult task to send original food in save condition. So they put something that can make a long journey overseas. ) So it`s indeed the junk food from Russia (or any other country). Russian eat all these snacks but not often.
@BeatTheBush

Evgeniy Krylov Agreed. I feel Russians might be more healthy on average than Americans due to the obesity levels in the US. All the preservatives, saturated fats, sugar, and salt gives all kinds of health problems. If anything, they should put some warning labels on these things like cigarettes, lol.
@JdMsk

Hah. I feel French or Italians might be more healthy on average than Russians due to the obesity levels in the Russia. Obesity becomes the global problem of junk food too, less or more from country to country. With regard to your specifics I think Americans are in move less because you are less walk then move with the car. That`s why the high level of obessity too.
