If you are staying near here for the rest of your trip, do try out the famous charcoal porridge (Ah Chiang's porridge) nearby or the Yong Tau Foo! They have plenty of cafes nearby as well which are quite popular amongst the youths!! :D I loveeeee Tiong Bahru as it is a place with rich heritage and culture of Singapore

Tiong Bahru Market, indeed Tiong Bahru more generally, is my idea of heaven. Did you try the Bakery? They have branches which are all great but the OG in TB is hard to beat. Por Kee is an experience not to be missed as well. Oh, and did you try the new Havelock MRT? If so, how far to the Market?

Local coffee (a.k.a. kopi) is very different to cafe-styled coffee. The coffee beans are roasted with sugar, margarine, and a bit of salt. They're made up mostly (or 100%) of robusta beans. Even the brewing parameters are quite different. 😊 You may have a read online about Nanyang coffee to find out its history and more.

You have to eat the following: Fried Kway Teow, Hokkien Noodle, Minced Pork Noodle (Bak Chor Mee), Fish head curry at Murtu's, Roti Chenai (Pratha), Laksa, don;t eat breakfast at Starbucks or McD etc. This is to start.. then go to places to eat BBQ stingray or satay maybe at Lau Pa sat to get the atmosphere at night.. but kinda of touristy. Compared to how it was a few years back Singapore has become a food wasteland. You have to know where to go, how to time your visits and then work through over many visits who serves good food. Unfortunately Mamak food is everywhere and dominates many food centres. Just over the border in Johor Bahru it's very different,
@huaiwei
@huaiwei Год назад
It is the same thing over in JB where it is also a hit or miss. There are only a few places on this planet where practically every food outlet is great, and JB (and Malaysia in general) is definitely *not* one of them.
@byteme9718
@byteme9718 Год назад
@@huaiwei I agree the quality is hit and miss and yes, it always was. The difference is that it's so easy to find places to eat in JB at any time. Given that and lower prices you can then more easily search for the best and discard what you don't like.
@huaiwei
@huaiwei Год назад
@@byteme9718 it is even easier to find places to eat at any time in compact Singapore, and the best hawker foods are not expensive as far as most Singaporeans are concerned. I don't even need a car or Grab for that, unlike in JB, which is part of the reason I would visit JB on my own unless someone drives me in.

@huaiwei Год назад
We are a typical Asian country where the vast majority of us do not care about organic food, especially when it comes to hawker food. Of course some foreigners who demand organic food can get them, but usually from higher-end supermarkets and at specific restaurants catering to this niche demand. I think when someone demands for organic food in an Asian street market, it actually smacks of ignorance and arrogance, even if you don't mean it.

so wrong. in singapore there is no street food. there is only hawker centre food. we call them food court. 90% of our normal people goes to food court everyday. hawker centres like these are for old people mainly and office people who work around and nothing else to eat (affordable) then otherwise eat at the food court. there is nothing really special everyday, they are just very normal food and part and parcel of everyday's life.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! As visitors, the food is special to us because we don't have these dishes where we are from. So we were happy to try~ And the sources we researched refer to hawker centre food as street food because many of the dishes originated as street food, but it's interesting to hear a different perspective on that. Cheers!

@nostaku Год назад
History lesson: hawker food WAS street food! Hawkers used to sell their food in the streets from individual carts back in the olden days. The government stepped in due to sanitary concerns and that's why hawker centres were created - to consolidate the hawkers into centralised and clean(er) food centres.
@huaiwei
@huaiwei Год назад
Seems like you need a culinary lesson yourself. Hawker Centre food *is* street food, sanitised version of course. It is no different from what is also happening in other Asian countries where streets are increasingly being cleared in favour of more hygienic food centres, especially as they begin to develop. But the heritage of them being originally street stalls remains, and many hawker stall owners still prepare their food the traditional way. And no, food courts are a different category, usually used to refer to even more sanitised and airconditioned food centres in malls. They are the ones often criticised for being "mediocre" as many of them utilise central kitchens, rather than traditionally making their own ingredients. Singaporeans from all walks of life eat at both hawker centres or foodcourts, depending more on convenience than pricing as you claim. You really need to quit making ill-informed and sweeping statements when you do not even seem to care much about Singapore's food culture.

Clearly hardly visited hawker centres or coffeeshops to see the crowds for himself.
